http://kotaku.com/happy-10th-birthday-to-my-favorite-elder-scrolls-game-1766023837

Was going to make this post last night but... Vodka. Also fuck Texas A&M forever.

Vanilla Oblivion was pretty meh. I got it day one on PC and was prepared to lose myself for hundreds of hours, and... Well, the game looked pretty for its time. It's just that Cyrodiil is one gigantic forest, which is boring. Morrowind had a marsh/swamp area, Red Mountain, the Telvanni territories... Sure, there was a bit too much rocky and bland terrain, especially along Vvardenfell's north coast, but point is it was varied.

Luckily mods/Shivering Isles made this aspect of the game better. Unique Landscapes does what it says on the tin, which makes the game 10x more playable by itself. Outside of the obvious Unofficial Patches/the Extender/Darnified UI, this would be the first mod I recommend. Shivering Isles adds Sheogorath's territory, which is pretty and full of batshit insanity no matter which side you wind up on. The quests are probably some of Bethesda's most inspired work. Tbh these quests alone are worth picking up the GOTY edition whenever it goes on sale. But yeah, IMO Shivering Isles saves the game from being a pile of mediocrity.

I hated how the game just gave you quest markers. I get that they're totally more convenient than written instructions and welcome their inclusion nowadays because I have soooooo many games, but part of the fun in Morrowind was trying to decipher/follow the instructions you were given. Oblivion just took that away and gave me nothing in return, which was kinda meh. Doesn't help I wasted $20 on the guide, fully expecting to need it. I wouldn't buy a guide nowadays because I know the internet will be able to help even on day one, but things like Reddit didn't exist, Twitter/Facebook weren't the sites we recognize today (for the better in FB's case), and even GameFAQs took time to get its guides up.

Least combat was improved. Then again, anything is better than dice rolls to see if you hit an enemy. Maybe that shit worked back in the day, but this was 2006. Even by then that mechanic was obsolete outside of games trying to evoke that old school CRPG feel. I never did that min/maxing shit with major and minor skills; it's a pain in the ass and I just want to play a game mayne.

Apparently I either uninstalled Morrowind/Oblivion at some point or my PC did it during the upgrade to W10. I think it's the latter; I can't remember doing it myself unless I had some mod conflict I couldn't resolve. This isn't a real loss. Whenever I get to reinstalling them (so I can play, naturally), I'll be able to get the latest versions of the best mods.

But yeah. I kiiiiiiiiiind of want to reinstall/play, but as always, I have too many games. Buying more does not help. I know I'll set aside time for Skywind, whenever that finally comes out (I don't count on a 2016 release), but beyond that I dunno lol.

https://gamesdonequick.com/schedule

FUCK YEAH

After one look through the schedule, I'm thinking of going for Thursday or Saturday. Sunday is also a strong day, but IMO nothing worth going for. I'd arrive the day before at around 5:30 PM-ish and just stay up through the night, watching meh runs so as to save money. Part of me thinks it might be better not to go and make a bigger donation instead, but I don't know if this will be back in Minneapolis again. I think it'd be cool to experience at least once, and I'd just spend the money on games I won't play soon anyway, outside of Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

Both days have their strong points, so I dunno which one I'd want to go for. Leaning towards Saturday atm though. Might have fewer runs but Mario Maker/Super Metroid are some of the hypest shit GDQ has to offer.

Wednesday/Thursday:
Tetris Attack
KOTOR
Zelda II
Tetris: The Grandmaster (this shit is cray)
TES block (kinda wish they did it traditionally but that'd be shit boring to non-fans)
FO3/4

Friday/Saturday:
Super Mario Maker
OoT
Pokemon Red
TAS block
FFVI
Super Metroid
SMRPG

LAEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls and it absolutely blew me away. Coming from games like Twillight Princess and RuneScape Oblivion was a much more fulfilled Fantasy experience for me. The graphics absolutely blew me away as well.

Looking at it today, it looks pretty fucking awful, but thankfully mods fix that quite well.

I've given Morrowind a few tries, but I could never get into it because of the combat. I do enjoy that you need to read through journals and really learn the land, I think that's something that's definitely lost in modern games. But yeah, the RNG is just too stronk and it ends up just being frustrating in a first person game like this. It works well in CRPGs, but not here. I'm waiting anxiously for Skywind to finish up, though. I hope they put in options to remove quest markers and fast travel (for the most part).

Oh, and wewt AGDQ! I always enjoy checking out some highlights and some games. I rarely have the interest or patience to sit down and watch a full day of the stream. :p

http://www.siliconera.com/2016/04/27/nintendo-nx-expected-launch-worldwide-march-2017/

Color me surprised. I'd have thought for sure that Ninty would release a new console around the holidays, but maybe it doesn't want to compete with the Christmas slate? Then again, it's Nintendo, and if nothing else they release games when they are ready. Maybe the NX stuff won't be ready by then, or maybe they just want to have a decent lineup of games on day one.

In any case, I'll probably wait on the console, if I buy it at all. I don't think I'd say I *regret* buying my Wii U, but it has been a bit of a disappointment. I'll want to see if it actually gets support, especially from Japanese developers, because most Nintendo franchises just aren't enough to sell me on a console anymore. Xenoblade and FE are two that will do it, but FE skipped Wii U altogether and Xenoblade was a downer, but part of that is probably me expecting something better than a GOAT game. I'm putting my faith in Atlus to save it for me with Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Shit looks and sounds incredible.

I think we all knew this was going to happen. It made sense even before a March 2017 release date of NX. We all assumed a holiday 2016 release date for both Zelda and the NX, so... Yeah.

https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/725224236340629504

I'm just here for the Fire Emblem app. You could actually make a workable FE game on mobile, but I don't think it'd be up to new FE standards. It'd probably be in the vein of, like, the GBA/DS games. Still fun games but not what you expect in 2016 in any space.

But that assumes the app is even a new FE game, which I doubt it would be. Even so, I'll try it because it's got FE in the title.

Huh, I'm not surprised at the release date or the dual Zelda release. I'm with Ro here, I don't really regret buying a Wii U, but it has been really underwhelming. I probably played Dark Souls 2 more in the two weeks it was out than I've played on my Wii U since I bought it (~80 hours). Nothing has really grabbed me and engrossed me like a lot of PC titles have lately, plus the nature of a console is for me much more cumbersome (as I like wearing headphones to not disturb Monica), especially that gamepad, lol.

I hope I'll buy the NX, because I hope Nintendo releases some really, really great games for it, and I hope the controller and graphics are all really top notch. I'm really excited to see what the NX will bring, but I'm definitely holding off on that thing. I might even hold off on the new Zelda until I grab an NX, who knows.

In non-Nintendo news, the new Hearthstone expansion, Whispers of the Old Gods, released yesterday in America and today everywhere else, and it's a pretty good expansion, plus we now have formats! You also get 13 free packs if you play it now, 3 free packs to start you off, and 10 more from doing two quests (win 9 games in total in standard).

More info here

Oh, and there was a big nerf last week which means you get full dust refunds on all the nerfed cards, so yeah...go disenchant them all. I had two of all of them and I got something like 4k dust. Neat.

I I just hope Nintendo really gets the third party developers on board this time. I don't really care but at the same time they're not going to sell any systems without it. They need to be able to launch their new system with all major franchises along with Mario Zelda in Metroid honestly. Backwards compatibility with me you would be great too considering how amazing Mario Kart 8 and Smash Brothers Wii U are.

We probably wont see any backwards compatibility. I don't know what kind of architecture the Wii U has, but I don't think it's x86 which is what PCs, PS4 and Xbox One use (right?) and the NX will probably use that as well.

Nah, people just assumed 2015 because it was shown during E3 2014. Holiday 2016 was the first release window announced.

Ah, ok. Well, that's not a big delay then, at least not for me as I'm willing to wait until I buy an NX (if I do) to play it. :P

Not really news, but the AV Club wrote an article about Persona as part of a series they're doing on "school" in video games. If you're interested, here's a link: http://www.avclub.com/article/persona-3-and-4-teach-most-important-thing-you-can-235879

Watching the Persona stream so you don't have to, as always.

What you want to know:

http://www.siliconera.com/2016/05/05/persona-5-will-release-in-japan-on-september-15-2016/

ATLUS HAS BALLS THE SIZE OF SMALL FUCKING PLANETS

I mean, competing with FFXV. LOL Squeenix's survey a few months back asked what game you would buy if they came out around the same time, and P5 barely edged it out, on a Squeenix survey. But yeah, I don't think there is a better time for a series to establish it's the new alpha dog in JRPGs, and I think Persona and Tales are the only series that would have a prayer of a chance against FFXV. Persona more so than Tales; it doesn't churn out game after game and has more style/substance. (I love Tales, but it is what it is: JRPG comfort food.)

EDIT: Kinda forgot Dragon Quest in this comparison, but it's bigger in Japan than here. If FF is 1-A, Dragon Quest would be 1-B.

Also the PS3 version was not cancelled for us. Yet. I get smaller publishers not wanting to focus resources on an older system, but development was started before Catherine came out. Sure, development at that point was probably "kicking around ideas", but P5 was being made for PS3 before the PS4 was on anyone's radar. There are probably a good number of us hanging onto PS3s specifically for this game (and also because PS4 still has like three games worth owning). Not localizing that version would piss more of us off than when the Vita versions of Nights of Azure/Setsuna were canned over here.

I fully expect a 2017 English date. Probably late winter/early spring. I'm hoping it's announced at E3, which would explain why it wasn't mentioned on this stream. Won't be horribly surprised if Atlus USA does an August/September-ish event for the release date though. E3 is more irrelevant with every year in an era where you can announce a stream and get your audience to watch.

...Poor Europe friends though. That sound you heard was Marill jumping off a bridge.

EDIT PART 2:

disregard the above i gargle balls

http://persona5.jp/e3/

This best be for our release date. I don't see what else it *could* be. A new trailer (or alternatively, localized ones) isn't enough to justify an E3 site, and do we need a 5th trailer at this point? Unless there are gameplay changes we don't know about, I can't see a good reason for a new trailer.

It just feels most likely that this is for our release date. Announcing our CE would be implied too, me thinks.

http://www.siliconera.com/2016/05/05/heres-persona-5s-latest-trailer-showcasing-new-characters-scenes/

THIS SHIT IS FUCKING HYPE

It's easily the best trailer yet. New waifus, the artstyle is still glorious, gameplay looks amazing, etc, etc. I just want my English release date nahimean.

Drop whatever you're doing and watch this incredible trailer.

http://www.siliconera.com/2016/05/05/persona-5-animation-day-breakers-announced/

Adding to the fall season queue. Looking forward to this almost as much as season two of Sound! Euphonium.

Can we NOT let A-1 do it this time? Their production values with Ace Attorney are fucking ass, and P4A/P4GA weren't exactly spectacular on the animation front either. I'd be okay with ufotable or Wit Studio, but those might be pipe dreams. Really anyone who can give this IP the respect it deserves is okay with me. So basically anyone but A-1/DEEN/other purveyors of cheap trash. If I can watch this sober, that will feel like a triumph in comparison to some of these turrible looking anime.

http://www.siliconera.com/2016/05/05/look-persona-5s-cover-art-20th-anniversary-edition-version/

I just hope we get a CE half as badass as this.

Not that it matters; I'm putting in my pre-order the second it goes up. Don't really care what site, though as always I'd prefer it to be Amazon.

All in all, it was totally worth watching, even if I got little sleep to watch a fucking tower/listen to repetitive music for damn near two hours.

That trailer is pretty amazing. Nice to see more characters added to the cast. Honestly looks so much better than either P3 or P4 already.

Also, A-1 Pictures generally has pretty fantastic animation quality and general production values (Erased, Sword Art Online, Your Lie in April, Aldnoah.Zero, Grimgar, countless others). I'm not sure why their video game adaptations look bad, but they're the exceptions for whatever reason.
