Sexual Orientation: Not Picky

  1. Blue Öyster Cult - "Veteran of the Psychic Wars (Live)"
The most obvious giveaway that this is Lightning's mixtape, and one of only two songs I actually know on this mixtape. I absolutely love this song. It's one of my favorites from Fire of Unknown Origin. My favorite part is the drums. It's such a simple beat, but it gives me goosebumps when I hear that floor tom. And of course, that solo; it's so beautiful! I'm not much of a solo guy (probably because I suck at them), but this solo just makes this version so perfect.

  2. Bob Dylan - "Ballad of a Thin Man"
Pretty much what I expect from Bob Dylan: slow-moving beat, lots of piano, some guitar here and there, and of course Dylan's recognizable voice. I love lyrics that tell a story, but this story sounds like it doesn't make much sense. I don't know much about Bob Dylan, but IIRC, he likes using weird metaphors and whatnot. It definitely shows in this song, at least. :P

  3. Bruce Springsteen - "Lost in the Flood"
It's like I'm listening to the same song, but with Bruce singing instead. Nah, but yeah, another slow song with piano and lots of singing. I don't think it's possible to hate Bruce Springsteen, so obviously this is a great song. Not his best, but still a great listen.

  4. Caravan - "Winter Wine"
What? A folk song? No wait, the song picked up, never mind. The singer's voice sounds a bit...odd, like he has something in his mouth or something. That aside, he still does a good job at singing. The solo is pretty interesting. I like the effect the guitar has (I assume it's a guitar, but the effect doesn't really make it sound like one). Nothing else to really comment on. It's a good song.

  5. Guns N' Roses - "Estranged"
I gotta listen to Axl Rose sing? Great... What the fuck, this is GNR? Oh, I should really wait for the song to pick up before commenting. :P UGH...I HATE Axl's voice! He ruins what otherwise sounds like it would be a great song. At least his vocals are mostly quiet in this song. Thank you, loud guitar! I suppose Axl's voice is tolerable in this song, but I still hate it.

  6. King Crimson - "The Court of the Crimson King"
And we come to the only other song I already knew on this mixtape. Though I think I've only heard this song like once or twice, so I forgot how it goes. It's quite different from "21st Century Schizoid Man". I wouldn't even know this was the same band unless someone told me. I should definitely listen to more King Crimson, because this song is awesome...and long. Why do progressive rock bands have such long songs? I don't mind long songs, but I get a bit annoyed when I think a song is near the end and I find out I'm not even halfway through it. Oh well, nine minutes isn't THAT long. What the hell? The song ended like seven minutes in, but it's still going. King Crimson is trolling! This ending part is so unnecessary and it just ends abruptly.

  7. Modest Mouse - "Teeth Like God's Shoeshine"
Finally, something more modern, though 1997 isn't that modern. This is Modest Mouse? I would not believe this is the same band that did "Float On", except for the vocals. This is another great example of how the 90's had the best music (best everything, for that matter). I don't care much for the slower sections, but the faster parts are amazing.

  8. Neil Young - "A Man Needs a Maid"
And back into old people music. Oh hey, an actual folk song. So many artists with easily recognizable voices on this mixtape. Also, so many slow songs with lots of piano. This song sounds so sad, and the orchestral instruments are a nice touch. Really make the song feel complete.

  9. OutKast - "Bowtie"
What the fuck am I listening to? Random change of pace is random. I don't care much for OutKast, but the rap in this song definitely beats any of that modern mainstream shit. The music is pretty meh though. Okay, this is giving me a headache. Can it end already? Oh hey, it did end. Guess it's nice that the song wasn't that long. :P

  10. Pavement - "Summer Babe (Winter Version)"
The singer reminds me of Rivers Cuomo. This song is a great change from what I've been listening to. Nothing else I can say about the song. It's a good song, but didn't really have anything worth commenting on.

  11. Pink Floyd - "Have a Cigar"
Getting a bit tired of your old people music, Lightning, but at least this song sounds good. Wait a minute...I think I do know this song. So that's three songs I know from this mixtape. Pretty much what I expect from Pink Floyd. Nothing that special, but still a pleasant song. What was up with that random ending? Weird...

  12. The Black Keys - "The Only One"
Woo, Black Keys! The love how this song sounds. It's so calming. I feel like if I listened to it while pissed off, I'd quickly become happy again.

  13. The Clash - "The Guns of Brixton"
Typical Clash song is typical. Good song, but once again, nothing special.

  14. The Doors - "The Crystal Ship"
Oh joy, another slow song of mostly piano. Next...

  15. The Stooges - "Gimme Danger"
Love it. The vocals are a bit meh, but the music is great to listen to.

  16. The Tallest Man on Earth - "Love Is All"
That voice...not sure if I like it. Eh...they kinda differ. There are moments where the vocals are nice to listen to, and other moments where my ears hurt. This is probably a song I'd only listen to if I was forced to (like I am now).

Final thoughts: And I am done. Pretty great setlist. Would have liked a few more faster-paced songs and/or a few more modern songs, but it's not that big of a deal. That OutKast song was pretty wack (except the rap), and I hate you, Lightning, for making me listen to Axl Rose's voice. Otherwise, lots of good songs up here and a few average (but still good) ones. I probably wouldn't ever casually listen to these songs (except for "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" because it's godly), but I still liked them. I'm giving this setlist a 7/10.

Time for my review!

Hangover - Taio Cruz
I didn't really enjoy this song. It's a generic pop song with a guy who sounds vaguely robotic with ridiculously catchy vocals, rapping verses and a strong backbeat. It's made out of solid genericness. Kinda forgettable.

We Found Love - Rihanna
This song was also repetitive and had generic singing and generic vocals in general. It reminded me of the last song, just with a female singer.

Dead to Rights - Devil Driver
Nothing like consistency. After the last two very forgettable, generic songs, this one is generic, yeah, but more my generic. Brutal as hell, epic harmonies, great riffs, I actually really liked this song. The vocals weren't too bad, either. They reminded me of Machine Head which is most definitely not a bad thing. Highlight so far.

Deadhead - Devin Townsend Project
Screw Dead to Rights being the highlight. This song's clean intro with moody, epic drums and synth blew me away, and that was before the distorted riff came in. Devin Townsend is fucking awesome though so that's not surprising. The vocals were also great as usual.

Sexy and I Know It - LMFAO
The creator of this mixtape, who I think is KRIS, doesn't get this whole consistency thing. Ugh, LMFAO. Tbh, they're not horrible, just ridiculously overplayed and not really that good. The song isn't all that great as the tone on the riff actually hurts, but the vocals were pretty catchy.

Milk Lizard - The Dillinger Escape Plan
This song reminded me so much of "There's No Such Thing As A Jaggy Snake" by Biffy Clyro; similar riff, similar vocal style. I didn't like this song as much as the one in GHWoR which just reminded me of when I played it with Ro and managed to fail and I was so embarassed I wanted to go hang myself. Anyway, the song itself was pretty good, actually. A little repetitive, but I liked it.

Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites - ?????
The band was never specified in the mixtape. In fact, all of the songs still had their MP3 names, so the first three songs in the mixtape all started with "1.". Huh.
As for this song, I managed to listen to the whole thing start to finish and I have no idea how I managed it. The entire song sounds like a computer fall apart with a really distorted riff in the background which keeps hinting at coming in, which sounds really cool if it did, but it never quite manages it fully. I did not like this, at all.

Stand - Devin Townsend Project
Epic riff starts off this song and keeps up throughout the song. It's very simplistic with great vocals as usual and good drums. Seems weird that in a nine song mixtape there's two Devin songs, but I can live with that. This was another epic song, and after the choir singing came in about a minute and a half in, it became so epic I don't even what. Will definitely come back to this one.

Ghost Walking - Lamb of God
The last song on the mixtape, Lamb of God. Not bad, just not all that great. Heavy, nice riffs, good growling. I didn't like the snare tone, felt more like a tin can. The guitar was great, though.

All in all, I'm not giving this mixtape a rating, but I felt it was a bit... samey. It was either pop/synth/whatever you wanna call it or heavy metal. There were a few standouts, but some were forgettable. The Devin songs were definitely the highlight. I'm pretty sure this was KRIS's.

Deadhead is by Devin Townsend, not the Project.
Scary Monsters is by Skrillex. But you're obv not sexy enough for LMFAO.

I would have rather had Kris' mixtape this year instead of last. Skrillex, LMFAO, Dillinger, and two Devin Townsend songs? Awesome.

If this isn't Paal's, I will feel really stupid... and ashamed. Overall a good setlist. The first half was great, the second wasn't.

"Cyborgs from Hell" - Gaia Epicus

The solo near the middle was just enjoyable. The second solo I liked a bit better, even though it was shorter. I was disappointed by the vocals just a teeny bit. Great vocalist, don't get me wrong, but I expecting a little more oomph from his voice.

"Carry On" - Angra

More power metal, but this has more of a symphonic sound than the first song, which is great. Bass a little past the 3 minute mark was enjoyable.. I have honestly never heard a band like this break out into a sort of funk beat in the middle of a song. It was an unexpected delight. I liked his voice more than the first song's vocalist. Maybe I'm a sucker for higher pitched voices.

"Save Us" - Dream Evil

His voice sounds familiar. Maybe I've heard one of their songs before. The instrumental portion of the song left me wanting. I didn't particularly care for the guitar solo.

"Hall of Freedom" - Tyr

Main riff is catchy. The folk metal sound is always a plus for me. The only part I didn't like was the beginning of the solo. The rest of the solo was better.

"The Devil You Know" - Anthrax

Who doesn't like Anthrax? Actually don't answer that. I don't want to know. Not one of my favorties, but still great.

"Eye of the Witch" - King Diamond

I'm not much of a King Diamond fan. Maybe I've never heard any of his great stuff, but this song just doesn't do it for me. The high pitched vocals are irritating. Guitar is the best part of the song.

"Sjohyenar (Havets Herrer)" - Kvelertak

Wouldn't play. Not sure why.

"Black Blood Faux (Part 2) - Allfader

Fast drums, gruff vocals, not a bad song, but it doesn't do much for me. I don't know why. I usually like songs like this.

"Tock's Taunt" - Amon Amarth

Similar to the last song, but I like this better.

"Jester Script Transfigured" - In Flames

I like the the beginning, minus the vocals. It interfere with the instruments. Actually, scratch that. I like the whole song instrumentally. The vocals throughout the whole song ruin it for me. Maybe I'm not feeling well today, but it just doesn't sound good.

"If I Don't Live Today Then I Might Be Here Tomorrow" - Mando Diao

I really didn't expect this kind of song on this mix. I don't like it. Sounds too indie. Not that I hate all indie, I just hate most of it. Instrument playing: mediocre - singing: annoying

"Depth Charge" - Devin Townsend

Starts strong, stays strong, ends strong. I like this song all the way through.

"Walk All Over You" AC/DC

Sounds like AC/DC. Is that sufficient?

"Elizabeth" - Ghost

The vocalist sounds a bit nerdy. I don't know how to describe it. At points, this singer sounds just like the singer in "Shallow Gravy."

"Wiz" - Candlemass

Very reppetitive guitar, except for the solo near the end (which was okay). I can imagine hating to play this song in Guitar Hero.

"Blood Trance Fusion" - Nachtmystium

The singer needs to be shot. He sounds like a tone deaf person who recorded his voice then converted it to a very low quality sound file.

"Ground" - Enslaved

Not a fan of whatever the vocals is. Everything else was okay.

"Almost again" - Strapping Young Lad

I loved the drum beat. Not sure what was great about it, but it was. Singing was excellent. Screaming was average.

"Ghost" - Devin Townsend

I'm not sure exactly what this is. I was under the assumption that Devin Townsend was purely Metal, not that I entirely disliked this song. It was upbeat, yet soft at the same time. Not something I'd listen to usually, but I probably will again.
