Viz is launching what is pretty much a TV channel on a certain game console later this year in the United States and Canada.

Doesn't seem bad, but it almost feels like a step back from the ability to stream anything you want whenever you want.

It sounds like it will be dub-only. Here are some of the things they mention showing up on the channel: Death Note, new episodes of Naruto: Shippuden, the new Berserk movies, and the dub premieres of InuYasha: The Final Act, Tiger & Bunny, Zetman, and Lagrange. If they have a good lineup, I'd maybe consider the $7/month, I'm not sure. They seem to have most of their stuff on their site, so I'm not sure how practical this is.

I'd put money down on PS3, myself. I suppose it could in theory be Wii, but it seems pretty clear Wii is on its way out. So perhaps Wii U. Those are the only realistic possibilities. I don't see this sort of thing coming to 360; most anime fans are also into JRPGs/other Japanese games, which have no presence on that system.

If I get a paid service, I expect no advertising as part of the deal. It's not a dealbreaker in and of itself, but it's what everyone else does when you pay. I also expect mobile features in 2012, and it sounds like those are not coming. Perhaps they're in the works for later, assuming the service succeeds.

I'd have to see the full lineup before making any judgments, but as it is, it doesn't appeal to me. If I paid for an anime service, right now it would be Crunchyroll.

I wouldn't go that far. While the 360 is behind the other two (for obvious reasons), it has a decent library of Japanese games considering.

Though, I do agree with you. It's most likely the PS3. The Xbox 360 already has an anime service.

I know it gets VNs and stuff in Japan, but how many of the games on that forum have gotten English releases? It might have a decent Japanese game library in Japan, but on this side of the ocean, not so much.

Hell, Clannad is there and the only way I have that is through a fan translation of the PC version.

Yeah, just scrolling through a few, I see a lot of VN's. Those usually never come out over here, and they're usually available on the PC and PSP and such eventually over in Japan, as well. The 360 sells miserably over there.

I would probably guess PS3, too. It easily has way more JRPG's and whatever and I pretty much agree with Ro's logic here.

Watched Kanon recently. I'll just say "it's another Clannad", because that's the easiest way to describe it. It has many of the same types of characters, tropes, shares the same artstyle, has similar music, and all that jazz. If you liked Clannad, you'll likely enjoy this.

This isn't an insult; both shows were done very well.

Also finished up Fate/Zero.

What can I say? This show was fucking awesome. Everything was top-notch: The music, animation, characters, story, etc. It's another one of those shows that I'd say "if you haven't watched this, watch it asap".

That said, nothing is ever perfect. There are some things that bothered me, but on the whole they're tiny and do not detract much from the experience. Spoilers because, well, my gripes are spoilerific.
-I find it a little weird that five of the six Heroic Spirits were obsessed with Saber in some way. I get why Berserker is, that's pretty obvious. I suppose I can understand Lancer's infatuation and Caster's obsession/case of mistaken identity, too. But Rider and Archer? Rider outright says he refuses to acknowledge her as a king at one point (what changed his mind?), and Archer is simply into control and possession; there is no way he "loves" her in any sense we can relate to.

-Lancer's master got noticeably less characterization than any of the other masters. He gets taken out of the game early, but the show went to decent lengths to develop everyone else's character. Even Caster's master had pretty much a whole episode or so to show how fucked in the head he was, and he died fairly early. All I know about Lancer's master is that he was a professor at some magic university in London, he was one of Waver's professors, he's fucking ruthless, and has a smoking hot wife. But what made him the way he is? What is his life's story?

-I was tempted to say there are too many change of pace episodes, but then again three of the four are essential to understanding certain characters. The feast with Saber, Archer, and Rider could have been condensed or something; it didn't really add much, if anything, to the overall plot.

I don't think Archer was supposed to love her in a way we can relate to. I think it pretty much was that he wanted to "own" Saber, which I think fits into his character well enough. He's an arrogant douche, to put it simply, and I think it was just a case of "You entertain me, now be my woman." I didn't think Archer's "obsession" was that unbelievable or anything.

And I actually enjoyed the feast episode quite a bit. And it did add Assassin's death (at least, I think that's the episode where Rider raeps Assassin), though I guess that was a strangely minor event for it being one of the Servants' deaths.

The only change of pace episode I couldn't get into was the one focused around Rin and Caster's master. It was pretty much fan service for Rin fans, and since we didn't watch Fate/stay night before that, it didn't have much to offer us. They probably could've done without that episode and spent more time with the climax of the series, though I doubt they were thinking much about it at that point in time.
Anime Expo has been going on, so a lot of news in the anime world has been popping up. Here's some stuff recently.

The Tiger & Bunny dub will premiere on Neon Alley (the Viz anime service mentioned in a few days ago) and the NA DVD/BluRay release will be in 2013.

Sentai licenses Mayo Chiki and Idolmaster: Xenoglossia. They've also licensed Legends of the Heroes: Trails in the Sky.

Bodacious Space Pirates (Mouretsu Pirates) will be getting a feature film.

Aniplex USA news. OreImo will be getting a cheaper re-release on DVD/BluRay and Baccano! will get a re-release on BluRay and it sounds like they're teaming with Viz to some degree for Neon Alley and a Blue Exorcist dub will be debuting on there. Last year's Mikunopolis in LA concert and special event will be released by Aniplex USA with a new site going live with more information.

There has also been some Neon Alley news.

Quote:

During its panel today held during Anime Expo, Viz Media took the wraps off of "Neon Alley," its forthcoming 24-hour online anime network, and provided even more details on how the service will work as well as confirming key partnerships with other companies.

To start with, the reason for the conception of "Neon Alley" was to fill in a gap in terms of programming, as there had been no broadcast outlet for uncut English dubbed anime, having previously needing at times heavy editing to make it suitable for airing, compared to the avenues available for uncut, subtitled content which are mostly found online.

In terms of pricing, the $6.99 subscription rate with limited advertising was deterrmined as the best way to deliver the content at the lowest price possible, as the channel aims to air more than just anime, with the goal to air everything from animated shorts, OVAs, music videos, behind the scenes, industry news, and live action within the scope of the channel's programming. To that end, Viz also confirmed its first partners in the service with live-action martial arts movie distributor Tai Seng and Aniplex making up its first third-party programming partnerships, while Anime News Network will be providing the foundation for its news content.

Related to the Aniplex confirmation, Viz confirmed that Blue Exorcist will be dubbed, but they also stated that airing on Neon Alley first would not mean that a cable channel would be left out of being able to broadcast any series that premieres first on the network, since this service is meant to supplement TV broadcasts and not replace them entirely, owing to their current partnership with Adult Swim/Toonami for Bleach and Kekkaishi, the reasoning given that one TV network can't pick everything up for broadcast.

As far as availability, at the start of the service, it will only be made available on game consoles with more specific announcements on platform partner being made later on. No confirmations were made on that point at today's panel, while the service itself will be limited to the US and Canada.

Right Stuf licensed Aoi Hana, Ristorante Paradiso, and Hyakko. (http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2012/06/29-1/right-stuf-adds-ristorante-paradiso-hyakko-and-aoi-hana)

Lastly, Crunchyroll announced that they will begin streaming to Playstation 3 and Samsung TV's later this summer. A Playstation Vita app will also be available later this year.

They also announced 10 shows they're simulcasting this year.

Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere 2
Chitose Get You!!
Campione!
So, I Can't Play H!
Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita
Natsuyuki Rendezvous
Kokoro Connect
La Storia Della Arcana Famiglia
Tari Tari
Sword Art Online

I bolded the ones that I'll personally be checking out.

http://astore.amazon.com/comiccon0f-20

Funimation is having a Comic Con sale. There look like some very good deals there.

Ones that kind of stood out for me.

Evangelion 1.11 - $10.97 (DVD)/$12.99 (BR)
Evangelion 2.22 - $14.93 (DVD)/$16.46 (BR)
Afro Samurai - $7.99 (BR)
Air TV: The Complete Series - $10.49 (DVD)
Baccano!: The Complete Series - $19.99 (DVD)
Big Windup!: The Complete Series - $17.49 (DVD)
Casshern Sins: Complete Series - $35.99 (DVD/BR combo)
Chobits: The Complete Series - $24.49 (DVD)/$26.49 (BR)
Claymore: The Complete Series - $24.49 (DVD)/$26.49 (BR)
Eden of the East: The Complete Series - $25.99 (DVD)/$27.99 (BR)

There's more. I just don't feel like listing anymore.

EDIT: If that link isn't working for you, go to Funimation's twitter page and look for the link there. It works when I first link it, but then it starts redirecting to some other page.

Lightning's spoiler on Fate/Stay Night nailed a lot of things. In the interest of not repeating his post, I have some different things to mention. That said, I reserve the right to some overlap. >.>

I'll start with the extremely obvious, I guess: FSN was not up to Fate/Zero's standards. But then again few things are, and if I went into this show expecting another Fate/Zero, I would be highly disappointed. Not just because pretty much every aspect of the show is inferior (only Saber's character and this show's humor are superior - not that it takes much to improve on "damn near zero"), but because the two shows are quite different in how they approach a story that has by and large the same concept as its centerpiece.

I actually didn't mind the humor. For the most part, it was appropriately used. I can think of maybe one or two times that I thought, "sure, this is funny, but this dilutes the impact of what I just saw".

The show was a bit on the fanservice-y side, but there was nothing too obnoxious. If anything, the parts where Shirou saw Saber in the bath were so awkward that they made me laugh to no end. There were a few other moments of fanservice too, but yeah, nothing that would make me think, "okay, this is too much fanservice; I'm dropping the show".

I suppose it's time to break out the spoilers.
The difference between FZ and FSN that strikes me as most obvious? FZ went to great lengths to try and develop pretty much every Master and Servant. Shirou and Saber obviously got plenty of development, and it was nice to see Saber have something resembling emotion this time around. Rin's development is pretty much that she goes from "thinking Shirou is totally incompetent" to "respecting and even liking him", and that's more than most characters got. However, even major characters like Illya and Kotomine got little to no development, to say nothing of people like Caster's partner (I refuse to call someone without Command Seals a Master in the way the show does) or Shinji. Their Servants might have gotten a scene or two, but still, not enough to make me feel like I knew them or anything.

I don't expect minor characters to get development, like the teacher staying at Shirou's house or the student council leader, or even the dead Master that Kotomine jacked Seals from, but after FZ, I'd expect some effort on the Masters and Servants.

By extension, this contributes to making everyone's death feel less climactic. As I was saying in the ToJ, events without context are just that: events. I felt nothing for these characters because I knew fuck all about what drove them, who they were, things like that. I did have some idea with many of the FZ characters, and like them or not, I felt something when they died because of it. I felt more when Rin was merely injured than I did during pretty much every death.

Obviously, one of the biggest culprits was the romance between Shirou and Saber. They had to spend a lot of time developing that, so I suspect other characters suffered for it. I don't think the romance was bad or anything (not that I would know what makes a good romance), but I'd have accepted less for a more developed cast.

Speaking of romance, it seemed rather obvious to me later on that Rin had feelings for Shirou, and Illya claimed to (awkwaaaaard). I suspect Sakura did too; who does all that shit and still has platonic feelings for someone? I'm happy they didn't go full-blown harem in the second half of the show, though I do agree that Rin (at the least) would have made a better partner than Saber.

Yeah, I've got little else. Lightning hit on it all. >.>
That said, it's still a good anime and one I'd recommend watching, but don't expect another Fate/Zero and don't watch it first.
