Just to let everyone know, Crunchyroll Premium *is* required. I was thinking of getting it anyways. Now I probably will. I've had back problems lately and if given the opportunity I would like to watch things from my bed. Plus it's always nice to contribute to a pretty good company. |

I watched an anime called Kaiba over the last two days. It's a 12 episode anime that's pretty well received though not particularly popular. The premise essentially boils down to an amnesiac boy waking up with a pendant that holds a picture of a girl he knew and the beginning of the show follows him as he starts recovering some of his memories and trying to figure out who the girl is. The animation definitely gave it a unique feeling. It gave the series a bit of a "children's anime" touch, which could not have been more deceptive. I personally enjoyed the style. It's not great in a technical sense at all, and it's fairly simple, but it worked and it worked well. The music was very good. The opening and ending themes were both great and the background music, while not always noticeable, had its moments of excellence. I watched the first seven episodes of the show yesterday and earlier today. These episodes were mostly episodic in its story-telling, though it did reference the over-arching plot regularly. This part of the show was magnificent. I'd compare the quality to some of the better episode Casshern Sins episodes and Mushishi. The main characters spend these episodes traveling around different planets and meet different people during these travels. Like the aforementioned shows, these characters have their own stories and they're beautiful stories. If the show maintained this quality, it would have easily been one of my favorite series ever. Unfortunately, after these first seven episodes the show focused on the main plot. The quality of the writing dropped immensely here. At first it wasn't bad at all. Up to and including episode 10 retained a high quality, though not quite up to the standards of the first seven. However, at this point the series took a pretty bad turn. While the plot was originally very simple yet effective, the show started turning it into something convoluted, though it was still decent. After this point the series pretty much goes into full Serial Experiments Lain/Neon Genesis Evangelion mode. Now I am hardly against a show being complex and psychological in nature. These two anime are both great. In the case of Kaiba, though, it just didn't work. The show started out with writing that was emotional and contained deeper themes, but still had a simple story at heart. It was really just a borderline love story, and instead of the last five episodes really attacking the show from that angle and giving the most satisfying conclusion to the love story that was hinted at in the first seven episodes, it felt like it became something else. Another gripe I had: Spoiler: click to toggle Anyways, the show started out as something truly special. The first seven episodes are amazing and I'd almost recommend this show based off of that alone. The next five (the last two episodes in particular) unfortunately take a simple story that could have traveled to an extremely pleasing conclusion and turn it into some kind of psychological Gainax-like conclusion. And do not get me wrong. The first seven episodes made you question things and it wasn't some superficial anime. Neither are (early) Casshern Sins or Mushishi, the two shows I'd compare these episodes to. At the same time, they manage to work extremely well with simple premises. Overall I gave the series an 8/10 on MyAnimeList because I feel bad disregarded just how great the first half of this show is. I would actually still recommend this show in most cases. It's a short enough show and my harsh opinion on the ending doesn't exactly seem like a popular one. Plus, knowing the people who post on this forum (and this thread in particular), you guys may appreciate the ending that I thought got overly psychological and Evangelion-ish. I personally just don't think that kind of ending did the first half of the show justice. |

http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2012...uinbear-project Something called the "Penguinbear Project" is being teased and it's related to the Mawaru Penguindrum and Revolutionary Girl Utena director. Awww hell yeah. Posted Image I'm thinking it could be a movie remake of Mawaru Penguindrum similar to the Utena movie. In other words, a remake that completely fucks with the original and changes everything but still won't make any sense unless you saw the original. Bring it on. |

Finished Casshern Sins tonight. I suppose I didn't have to because the two new Toonami shows will have me watching until I decide if I like them or not, but whatever. I'll likely still watch it on Toonami anyway, because what the fuck else am I going to do on a Saturday night? (Besides drink, which I may very well do anyway.) On that note, I'm glad to see them adding new shows. Hope this means Toonami isn't going away any time soon. As for Casshern Sins, perhaps it's just that the first half really reminds me of Treme, with its focus on characters and building the world and all that jazz, but I think I preferred that to the more "plot" second half of the show. Not to say the plot was bad, because it wasn't, but I felt the world and the robots/people still trying to survive and fulfill their dreams in an incredibly shitty world were the most interesting parts of the show. Most post-apocalyptic worlds are dull as shit, so it's nice to see one that... Wasn't. Also, starting up Outlaw Star, since I managed to find a good download for it. I know, it was on the air a long time ago, but for some reason I never finished. |

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-...or-january-2012 Second season of Hanagai will be airing in January 2013. I haven't seen the first season, but I've heard pretty good things about it. Not sure if it's my kind of show, though. |

Been reading Negima since I don't have any internet/TV. Once you get past the fan-service, it's a decent manga. |

No, but it sure doesn't add to quality and it's probably one of the fastest ways to turn a newcomer OFF to anime. Well, other than simply "recommending a shitty anime". It's a major part of the reason I recommended that Milk watch Fate/Zero first (whenever his slow ass gets better tubes), and not Clannad. |
