Since nobody's been posting here in, like, ever, I thought I might as well post a few first impressions of some of the new anime.

Tamako Market: Obviously, I've been looking forward to watching this after Chuunibyou. Didn't know it would air so soon. This one went off to a good start. It's funny, animation's great (as expected from KyoAni), and for a slice of life, the story is interesting. I don't expect too much from Tamako Market but this one's seems worthy of watching.

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha: Honestly, I was hesitant to watch this at first. I expected some forced jokes, lots of fanservice, and a decent plot that'll lose its interest later on. I've been proved wrong. Although, there are some fanservice involved but not too much to stray from the point of the show. With that aside, the anime can get very serious; it tackles problems from politics, war, economy, society, etc. So in short, anyone who watched Spice and Wolf should watch this.

Haganai NEXT: I might as well keep this one short since there's not much to expect from Haganai. Just a typical school/slice of life/harem. Yup, not much to expect.

Some guys on another board I go to like Maoyu so far and have likened it to Spice and Wolf. I think I'll end up giving it a shot.

Still waiting for Chihayafuru 2's first episode to air (for free) on Crunchyroll and Sasami-san@whatever to air on theanimenetwork this Friday.

Those three will probably be the only new ones I check out.

A new Ghost in the Shell anime is launching this year called Ghost in the Shell Arise. It's from the same studio that did S.A.C. (Production IG), but it doesn't look like a continuation.

Unfortunately, you can't see much of The Major's new design. What you can see looks a bit more like the movie's design (with bluer hair) than the S.A.C. design.

I am happy for more Ghost in the Shell, but I shall approach this with caution.

DAT STORY TIEM

Caught up on Sasami-san@Ganbaranai today. It makes absolutely no fucking sense but I can't help but love it. It's funny, the OST is great, the animation is insanely cool (Shaft etc.) and it never ceases to surprise me.

Gonna catch up on Maoyuu Maou Yuusha tomorrow night then start on Steins;Gate like I said I would weeks ago.

The director of Gurren Lagann and Panty & Stocking is directing a new anime. The writer is the same writer from AnoHana and Hansaku Iroha, which is awesome.

I finished the first season of Higurashi tonight. Overall it was fine, but I felt that it could have been way better.

First of all, let's get the obvious flaw with the anime out of the way. It looks like something that would have looked terrible in the year 2000, let alone 2006. I just finished Legend of the Galactic Heroes last week (which I should have written a post on because it was quite possibly the best anime I've ever seen) and aired between 1988 and 1998 and it looks better than Higurashi. I don't think I have to go very in-depth here because I'm sure even everyone who loves the show can admit its animation is awful.

Overall, I wasn't a fan of the cast. Mion and Oishi were my two favorite characters. Oishi obviously isn't a deep character, but he was a pretty cool dude for the most part. Mion because...

Spoiler: click to toggle

I have many things I don't like about the others. Rika's alright, too, I guess. Also, the characters seemed very inconsistent, and I mean beyond the obvious normal/psycho split they had in whatever arcs. Rena was pretty much certifiably retarded (or, as Marill put it, carefree) in the first six episodes, and then all of a sudden she seems like an intelligent human being and the change in personality was very abrupt. And then you had Rika who seemed like a moe blob whose language consisted of cute noises at some points in time, and then a smart little girl at others (and this is avoiding that obvious second personality she has). So yeah, the characters just seemed like completely different people at some points in the show and then at others, and again, I mean this beyond the obvious different personalities in some of the arcs.

And then there's the main character. Holy fuck. First of all, whoever was in charge of casting for this needs to just be shot because they could not have picked somebody with a more annoying voice if they tried their goddamned hardest. Whenever he got distressed and raised his voice, his voice was like nails on a chalkboard. And he was overall an extremely obnoxious character. Seriously, this dude is going down as one of my least favorite characters of all time. Fuck him.

Last note on the characters, I also thought they had terrible chemistry. Satoko and Rika are good friends, but they pretty much seem tacked on to the group. The chemistry between those two and Mion and Rena was pretty much nonexistent. Honestly, that's probably the only relationship that I thought seemed even somewhat natural. I don't know if anybody else in the show even had a conversation with Rika. I'm pretty sure in the first season she's just that one character who dies in disturbing ways. The awful chemistry in this show is obviously due to the "arc" nature of the story. With every character's personality changing up so often, there was just no consistency. It's hard to take the relationship between two people seriously when they just brutally murdered each other 30 minutes ago. That just didn't work for me.

Moving on from the characters, there were tons of little gripes I had elsewhere.

- The dialogue in this show was really weird at times. It was just awkward and out of place sometimes. One example off the top of my head is when Shion is at the baseball game and remarks "Man, Satoshi is good at baseball!", and then Coach spills out tons of really personal shit about Satoshi to her out of absolutely fucking nowhere. I mean seriously, Shion didn't pry at all. Dude seemed like he was dying to tell somebody about Satoshi's personal problems.

- For a horror series, the horror in this felt very fake. And by that I mean there was very little genuinely scary about this show. Probably because you could tell what was going to happen from a mile away once you discovered who the crazy person of the week was (hint: they're going to kill a bunch of people). Almost all of the sense of horror stemmed from the characters' eyes. You'd have a conversation between two characters and you wouldn't feel any sense of horror, then the animation of the characters' eyes would change (they had various ways of doing it in this anime: the "cat eyes" of the first arc, the eyes that had no pupils and were just solid of whatever color their eyes were, the whacky seizure eyes that fly all over the place) and suddenly you're like "wtf" and you felt something. Once I figured out that the change in eyes was the only reason I was feeling any sense of horror at all (and I figured this out probably the very first time it happened, when lame-ass protag was reading a newspaper in the first episode), it lost all effectiveness.

- The comedic parts of this show were fucking awful. I felt embarrassed for the show when watching these parts. "Rena gushes over how adorable something is and Rika makes cutesy little noises while Satoko, Mion, and lame-ass protagonist act obnoxious." There you go. The beginning of every arc. (Mion got better as the show progressed)

- Rika's suicide scene was fucking disgusting. Ugh. That's one image I cannot wait to slip from my memories. That's that shit I don't like.

Okay, those are my gripes with the show. There are numerous. But now I'll talk about the part of the show I genuinely enjoyed: the plot. Yaaaay.

The whole mystery of why the events in this show are taking place and where this whole thing is eventually going to go is actually very intriguing. The way they unveil more and more things with each arc is a very effective storytelling method for this show. If it weren't for this aspect of the show, I really probably wouldn't even bother with the second season, but the mystery is definitely intriguing and I do want to see it answered.

I'll start the second season at some point in the not-so-distant future. I first want to watch a few things in between (Diebuster and A Certain Magical Index II are first on the list).

Keep Moving Forward

Recently I've begun watching animes regularly, so I'll write up about all of the ones I've seen lately.

Azumanga Daioh: This anime is brilliant. I found the humor to be absolutely fantastic and I had to try hard to not burst out laughing many times (I watch anime when everyone's asleep). Every character was well-developed and their interactions with each other were fantastic. For those that care, it's not a moe blob anime, only one (maybe two) of all the characters could be considered moe. I give it a 9/10.

Cowboy Bebop: Oh man, this anime. When I watched the first episode, I wasn't all that impressed with it. All I saw was an action anime, so I didn't see what the big deal was. After that, I didn't touch it for months, but eventually I decided to watch the rest of it, and I'm very glad I did. One of the reasons why I wasn't hooked immediately was because I didn't really like any of the characters. As I watched it more, though, I started learning bit by bit things about each of the characters, and by the end, I got to really loving them. The anime never got into a repetitive pattern, either, since it had a habit of changing its genre every episode. As for the ending, I thought it was absolutely one of the best endings of all time. I had never been impacted by an ending so much before; I was in tears for nearly an hour. The ending alone made me debate on giving this a 10, but I also didn't really enjoy some of the episodes and it was sitting on a solid 8 until the finale. I give it a 9/10.

Madoka Magica: I actually first saw this anime in May/June of last year, so it's not really a new entry. I did, however, rewatch it for a second time with Marill, so I can include it here. I love this anime to pieces; it's my absolute favorite. Anyone who hasn't seen this needs to ASAP. It got a 10/10.

Sword Art Online: I've never watched an anime more deserving of the title "overrated" than this one. For an anime that's an absolute favorite among some of my friends, I expected it to be, y'know, GOOD. This anime has many problems, among those being shallow plot, predictable/unlikable characters, incredibly flat protagonist, and incredibly rushed pacing. It does have really good animation and a good OST, though, so it wasn't completely bad. Still, I couldn't make it any further than five episodes. 5/10.

Sword Art Online starts out very good. The more episodic character-driven side stories were much more interesting and really made the Sword Art Online universe look good. It took a pretty generic and uninteresting premise and turned it into something much more serious and it wasn't a cliched action anime. You could really feel the gravity behind somebody dying in the game. *insert Shirou "People die when they are killed" pic*

After it gets to the climax of the first arc, it really goes downhill fast. There was nothing wrong with the story itself, it was just told way too quickly. After you get introduced to the SAO world, they spend like 8 episodes on the episodes I was referencing in my first paragraph. Then after that you only get like 2 episodes of the actual legit SAO story being told. I thought the arc ended well, but it was rushed way too badly.

Then after you get past the SAO arc (which was pretty good, imo, even with the incredibly rushed climax), you get smashed in the face with the awfulness that is the Alfheim Online arc. Holy fuck that was an awful arc. Fuck that shit.

IT'S 5:20AM SO IT'S TIME TO POST ABOUT ANIME

Before I post this, just wanna say the highlights of the Spring season were Chihayafuru 2, Hataraku Maou-Sama, and A Certain Scientific Railgun II. I'd recommend all three of those series.

But yeah, the Summer season is beginning and it's time to start some new shit. A Certain Scientific Railgun II is continuing into this season, and that's really been great so far. Legit 9/10 show if it keeps up. Best entry in the series.

Besides that I'm watching:

Danganronpa: The Animation
Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya
Gatchaman Crowds
Monogatari Series: Second Season
Silver Spoon
The Eccentric Family
The Sunday Without God
The World God Only Knows 3
Watamote

I've watched the first episode of three of them so far. Some thoughts:

The Sunday Without God: The reason I decided to give this a shot was because it seemed like it had a pretty interesting premise and I liked the art style in the picture I saw. Premise is pretty much that people stopped being able to die for reasons that have yet to be explained, but suddenly some dude showed up in the main character's (a little girl) village and killed everyone, so yeah. The first episode was pretty serious, but not as serious as the premise made it seem. First episode was decent and I'm interested in seeing where the story goes at least.

Monogatari Series: Second Season: By far my most anticipated show of the season. I love this series so much. First episode was pretty awesome and more of what we expect from this awesome show, with one exception: there was no Araragi (the main character of the show), which was a bit disappointing since Araragi is one of my favorite characters ever. But this show has good characters coming out of its ass so it made up for it. The best part about this episode is that it officially reestablished the quality seen in Bakemonogatari, in my opinion. Nisemonogatari was good, but not as good for numerous reasons, and this was better than Nisemonogatari. Did not disappoint.

The Eccentric Family: I think this is going to be the surprise show of the season. I never even heard of it before today when I saw people talking about it. It's based on a novel from the same person who wrote the novel that The Tatami Galaxy is based on, which is one of my all-time favorites. First episode showed a ton of potential. It was funny, imaginative, introduced some good characters, and I can't wait to see more. It's a show about tanukis and tengu living among humans and it's pretty awesome from the first episode. This is new territory from P.A. Works (studio who made Angel Beats, among others) on every level, and right now it looks like a good direction.

I don't even know if anyone here even watches anime anymore. If so, what are you guys watching/thoughts so far?

I haven't actually caught up to my anime until last night. Out of the new ones, I've only watched Monogatari Series: Second Season, which is off to a good start (mostly because I get to see more of short-haired Senjougahara and I LOVE HER) and probably has a big story in store.

So, my thoughts on the anime I just finished:
Hataraku Maou-sama: The plot? Demon Overlord Satan has escaped defeat and traveled to modern-day Japan where he now works at a "McDonald's." What's not to love about the plot? Even though it's an outlandish plot (or in anime standards, a cliche), it was actually very entertaining. Most of the entertainment comes from the strange characters and the situations they get involved in (i.e. a girl from another dimension who discovers a TV.) However, as more characters get into the show, it gets easier to identify where they're from and they're obviously connected, in some way, to Satan (who is the main character.) Overall, it's still a great series which I commend to anybody who watches anime to watch it.

Oreimo S2: For some reason, I liked this one more than the first season. Probably because the characters looked gorgeous on this one than the first. Again, there's not much to cover about the second season. What I can point out is that it actually develops the other characters, especially Kuroneko. So that's all I can say about this one. A great series. Also would commend anyone to watch this.

RDG: Red Data Girl: I actually finished this a few months ago and this was actually, well.................bad. I wanted to watch this because of PA Works but I think they just got lazy doing this. Either that, or it's simply just a bad story. Simply, it's about a shy, young girl who is a vessel for a God and she must be protected by this guy or else. Personally, I felt the series just drags on and on and not much really happens.

Aaaaaaand that's about it. Still progressing on Suisei no Gargantia, Attack on Titan, A Certain Magical Index, and From the New World.

So I've watched these series over the past month:

RDG: Red Data Girl
Yahari Ore No Seishun Love Come Wa Machigatteiru
Shingeki no Kyojin
Date A Live
Oreimo 2

So I was disappointed with Red Data Girl. It never really went anywhere with the story. There is little character development. The setting is interesting and that's about it.

On the flipside, I expected Yahari Ore No Seishun Love Come Wa Machigatteiru (My youth romantic comedy is wrong as I expected), or Oregairu, to be like Haganai but I was mistaken. Despite having the same setting, Oregairu is very different and I was completely enamored with it. I loved all the internal commentary made by the main character and how he went about fixing whatever problems he encountered. Definitely the highlight of this past season for me.

Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) was a manga I started reading before the anime started. The anime isn't as graphic as the manga however it still manages to leave an impact as to what is happening in that depressing, forsaken world. I expect an unsatisfying ending for the anime considering the manga is just short of 50 chapters and stopping at around chapter 25 is right before a significant plot point. We'll just have to wait and see how things turn out.

Date A Live is nothing special but enjoyable. The protagonist uses love to conquer spirits but he is a far cry from The God of Conquests, Keima Katsuragi. The action sequences are cool and I really enjoyed the opening song. Aside from that, everything else was okay.

And lastly, OreImo 2. I was very happy with it and enjoyed it more than the first season. It was more of what the first season had to offer plus fleshing out some of the other characters such as Saori and Ruri. Good stuff.

I also watched Bakemonogatari and fell in love with that too. Very pretty and I really like the use of colored frames with simple text. Watched it all in one day and it was glorious.

As for summer season, I'll be watching these:

Kimi no Iru Machi: I've been keeping up with the manga which is nearing 250 chapters so it'll be nice to go back and watch all the drama and heartbreak unfold once again.

The World Only God Knows III: I've been waiting for this since the end of the second season. The Goddess Arc is my favorite.

High School DxD New: Thoroughly enjoyed the first season so I'm looking forward to this.

Monogatari Series: Second Season is something I'll watch after I finish Nisemonogatari.

Blood Lad and Gin no Saji (Silver Spoon) are the wild card animes that I know nothing about but have intrigued me.

And now let the watching commence.
