That reminds me, I grabbed a short VN a while back called Juniper's Knot that I never installed. Now I really need to get my laptop fixed.

I really do not like how this first half of Aldnoah.Zero ended.
Spoiler: click to toggle I liked Slaine but this episode completely cemented him as an awful character. He gains some degree of respect for Saazbaum over the last few episodes I suppose, which was fine and I thought it was a pretty interesting twist. Then, Slaine SAVES Saazbaum while Saazbaum is in direct pursuit of Asseylum, who we all know Slaine is in love with. That's still not so bad. Whatever. Then, Saazbaum fuckin' shoots Asseylum immediately after Slaine saves him, because, well, that was Saazbaum's fucking goal the whole time and he didn't even try to hide that from Slaine. What the fuck was Slaine attempting to do here? I need a writer or director or something to gives us that piece of information because he single-handedly made this whole situation a clusterfuck and I don't see his motivation here. His allegiance towards Asseylum was obviously way stronger than towards Saazbaum considering he killed Saazbaum immediately after he shot Asseylum. This episode just completely took a shit all over Slaine as a character. Also Inaho's potentially dead which sucks, since the character they just butchered has a chance to emerge as the next half's main character. And who the fuck knows who's dead and who's alive anyway with the way this show throws so many "THEY'RE DEAD... or are they?" moments at you. I have a hard time believing Asseylum would go through a THIRD of those moments and come back alive in the second half. Inaho I can see but it looked like he got shot in the head so that'd be weird. God I hope Slaine gets his shit completely fucking wrecked in the second half.
This episode was bad.

Aldnoah.Zero stuffs Posted ImageDo I really have to say anything else? The idea behind a plot twist is that you don't see it coming, but it either sets a tone for the show (see: Madoka Magica, episode 3) or is unexpected yet still foreshadowed/consistent with the show (see: most plot twists ever). This was unexpected but as Lightning said, it totally shat on Slaine as a character. I thought it was obvious that he would eventually defect to the side of Earth. He was never accepted amongst the Terrans, Asseylum was fighting with them, etc. I would like more explanation on his motivation to help Saazbaum, but whatever, that's not as big as a deal as knowing what Saazbaum was out to do AND LETTING HIM DO IT ANYWAY, EVEN THOUGH SLAINE WAS OBVIOUSLY IN LOVE WITH ASSEYLUM. HOLY SHIT THE DUMBASSERY IS UNBELIEVABLE. I bitched about this anime being highly predictable. I KIND OF expected the hammer to fall here. I'm not even horribly surprised by the MEANS, but more so by the MOTIVATION, or lack thereof. It's fucking bullshit.

Aldnoah.Zero stuffs, part 2 Now that I think about it a little, here's what I THINK happened. Keep in mind that I may or may not have been drinking, but even so, I feel this makes some degree of sense.
-Slaine sees Princess Asseylum doting over Inaho. Now, we all know Slaine loves her. She was likely his first love as well, so seeing her dote over another guy has to shake Slaine to his very core. Slaine *looks* happy to see Asseylum alive, but inside he has to be SEETHING that his love could care this much for another male.
-Slaine then sees Saazbaum pwn Asseylum. Now, he had to know Count Saazbaum was nearby; he saw Saazbaum and Inaho fighting. However, watching it again, I don't think he knew Saazbaum was that close. Perhaps that and his internal conflict concerning Asseylum were enough to make him lose sight of all else that didn't have to do with Asseylum.
-The thing here is, we all *know* what Saazbaum is out to do, and we know that Slaine knows. What we didn't really consider is the impact that seeing Asseylum in the flesh, caring so much for Inaho, would have on Slaine. He had to be overwhelmed with emotions: Happiness to see her alive, hatred that she cared for another guy, and perhaps others.
-Of course, Slaine pwns Saazbaum after this. I'm still lost as to why he would save the man he KNEW was trying to kill Asseylum, but that's something that can be explained next cour. My personal guess would be that being spared when Saazbaum could have easily killed him in any way he so chose fostered a sense of loyalty in Slaine, but idk lol. I'd guess that seeing the girl he loved die (or grievously injured, because this show trolls) drove him (temporarily?) insane.
-Slaine then sees the wounded Inaho crawling towards Asseylum. In his mind, this confirms his worst fear: That Asseylum and Inaho are in love. Thus, he shoots Inaho in an attempt to ensure that they can never be together. Personally? I think Asseylum loved Inaho, but Inaho didn't really love her, at least not *yet*. It's possible Inaho liked her or that they would have fallen for each other, but we don't know at this point. Inaho then pulls his gun and Slaine pwns him. But yeah, I think it was a "if I can't have her, NOBODY CAN" sort of situation.
Do I think this was *good*? Not really. Nothing we had seen up to this point indicated that Slaine was this kind of person. He had always seemed kind of cowardly, but then again, courage can only be exhibited when one is afraid, and bah gawd, Slaine was afraid: Afraid that he lost Asseylum, both to death and to Inaho. He did the only thing he saw as reasonable: Eliminate both threats.
Thoughts?

aldnoah.zero Yeah I figured that's why he shot Inaho. My issue was mostly with him helping Saazbaum. He knew what Saazbaum was trying to do and he knew that Asseylum was nearby.

Aldnoah.zero I think Ro's hit the nail on the head here. I'm still not 100% sure on why he decided saving Saazbaum was a good idea but I expect that we'll go through that.
The main thing I'm mad about is that Inaho and Seylum are the best characters in the show. If they're both dead then that fucking sucks and if they miraculously come back to life again then their plot armour is stronger than the fucking invincible shield. Shocking end to the cour but I think the series suffers for it. We'll see in January I guess.

Aldnoah.Zero First things first: FUCK THAT LAST EPISODE
Next, >Inaho >best character Never. He is, without a doubt, the worst main character I have ever seen. No emotion, always knows what to do, and, if he doesn't, better believe he will figure it out. I genuinely hope he stays dead.
Now, Asselhfgsorbekm was probably my favorite character, a least partially because she got characterization. I could not give two shits about the various birdge bunnies, Rayet, Eddhakfhsjs, etc. Seylum was actually developed to a degree.
Slaine was horrifically derailed and is easily the biggest idiot in existence.
Saazbaum was hax and a good villian otherwise, but, holy shit, his mech is like those old video game bosses that were impossible by design (Goro, SNK bosses, etc.).
All in all, I have no idea if I am going to keep up with this one when it returns. I am actually legitimately mad.

Aldnoah I really like Inaho's character. I think there's much, much more to him than generic emotionless lead but YMMV.
That said, all the other Orbital Knights were defeated in some clever way and Saazbaum was just "I have every single power known to man so that must make me OP, right" and then he just got wrecked.
I felt the series needed some form of plot twist like Earth losing this battle and coming close to extinction but this is like the worst compromise. Also, at the end, it just says that Seylum is missing so we all know she's coming back through bullshit. I've been really enjoying the show since it came out and felt it was getting better and better since Episode 7 so this is something of a kick in the teeth.

Aldnoah.Zero I dunno, most people, even ones with the thickest plot armor, don't usually survive three gunshots to the chest and one to the head.

Aldnoah.zero They also tend to not survive falling like a mile from the sky into a giant castle, so...
