It's kinda subtle sometimes, but the music in Parasyte is really well done.

A new anime by the writer of Clannad/Kanon and from the studio that did Angel Beats has been announced called Charlotte.

http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2014/12/22/video-aniplex-and-key-reveal-original-anime-charlotte

Airing sometime in 2015, I guess. Should be good.

Gonna copy/paste my 10 favorite anime of the year post from IGN.

There are a lot of anime this year I haven't watched yet that I want to watch (including Ping Pong, Wixoss, Yuuki Yuuna, Space Dandy, Rage of Bahamut, and a few others). I'm also only including shows that have actually finished in the year 2014, so it'll include shows that started in 2013 but finished in 2014 and leave out shows that started in 2014 and will finish next year.

1. Mushishi - I thought Mushishi returned and was better than ever, peaking with the final half-season. If you've seen the original series you know what to expect, and that's some of the most wonderful stories you could possibly fit into a short 20 minutes along with an amazing soundtrack and great animation.

2. Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun - Hands down the funniest anime of the year. There was a decently large cast of hilarious characters and not a single one was wasted or underused and each brought something different to the table. Comedy's hit and miss almost inherently but Nozaki-kun certainly hit a lot more than it missed.

3. Silver Spoon - The second season of Silver Spoon aired early in the year and was even better than the first after a somewhat slow start. The drama was turned up a notch at some points and it felt like the relationship between Hachiken and Mikage actually started to go somewhere a bit. One of the best slice-of-life series out there in my opinion.

4. No Game No Life - I originally skipped this and didn't go back to it until several episodes had already aired, and it vastly surpassed my expectations going in. It's funny, has a great art style, and a plot that's actually pretty interesting. I was a fan of most of the cast (Sora, Stephanie, and Jibril) though I didn't care much for Shiro and thought she was pretty boring. Very good show, though. Hoping for a season 2 next year.

5. World Conquest Zvezda Plot - Another show that shattered my expectations in much the same way No Game No Life did. I was originally interested in Zvezda but skipped it that season and went back to it recently. It's a very funny show that knows when to take itself seriously and when not to. I think a lot of people didn't care that much of the show was largely episodic, but I loved it. Unfortunately there were a few things underdeveloped as it was a fairly short show, but I'm hoping for another season down the line, however unlikely that may be.

And the rest of my top 10 I don't care to write about because I'm lazy...
6. Terror in Resonance
7. Nisekoi
8. Blue Spring Ride
9. Nagi no Asukara
10. Chaika

http://www.destructoid.com/anime-app-crunchyroll-is-now-available-for-wii-u-285406.phtml

You'd think this would have come before the Xbone app if only because animu fans seem more likely to be Nintendo (and Playstation) fans, but whatever. Maybe the Wii U version was harder to develop because of its architecture or something.

Might be cool to watch something while laying in bed or some such idk. If the app (or Wii U) supports downsampling, that'd be sweet. In this case you'd stream a show in 1080p but watch in 480p, which should make the image look better than it otherwise would.

I'll probably still stick to my PC for srs anime viewing, but if I can't/don't want to use that for some reason...

Some random fall season thoughts I guess.

Not sure if I'll stick with Sailor Moon. The last five or so episodes have been decent plot-wise, but the show is still on the worst production schedule ever (first and third Saturdays of the month) and the returns are just... meh. The artstyle isn't bad but there's a lot better out there. The CGI isn't all that great. It works, but obviously something like FSN or Aldnoah.Zero looks far superior, and those shows only need one week to release new shit. I like the aesthetics, but there's no reason this shit should take two or even three weeks.

Many of the episodes try to squeeze in plot, the bloated transformation sequences (which have gotten shorter now that all five Sailor Guardians are together, tbf), AND fights. It all just winds up feeling like a rushed mess. Something like FSN feels like it's divided into largely "plot" and "action" episodes and I think it works a lot better because every episode isn't trying to do too much. The last episode of FSN works as both a plot and action episode but it was also 48 minutes, which is plenty of time. I don't see Sailor Moon ever coming out with 48 minute episodes, so yeah.

This has *always* been clear, but it became more clear in the last few episodes. These final fights against the antagonists should have been climactic, but because every episode is trying to do a lot of things, we get rushed three-five minute fights replete with asspulls. It's fucking lame.

I wasn't impressed with the trailer for the next arc. It's so obviously setting up time travel/alternate dimension shenanigans that it hurts, and those are things that aren't easy to do well. I don't trust Sailor Moon to do them well. I didn't know where they could go after defeating Queen Metalia anyway, but I wasn't expecting this.

Who knows what they're doing with the next two Grisaia VNs. I suppose what I hope for depends on how long they are. If they're shorter, I hope they just blow through the content of both in one season. If they're near the length of this VN, I hope for a season per VN. Really, I just hope to avoid filler episodes because filler is the fucking worst.

It's a good thing this series' plausibility was never its selling point. I'm supposed to believe a 16(?) year old boy is already amongst the world's best snipers? I'm supposed to believe he can outwit an entire clandestine organization? Etc, etc. So much of what happens in this show makes no fucking sense, but at the end of the day I don't care because the characters are worth it. I didn't like anyone but Amane until their character arc, but the character arcs flesh them out and give them much-needed personality/backstory. Still #TeamAmane though.

Feel Mushishi ended on a down note, but it's fucking Mushishi. Even its down notes would be amongst many series' best episodes, so whatever. The final mushi was one of the more interesting ones in the series and I kinda wish it were more focused on that than the relatively meh story of the villager/his village. Then again, it wouldn't *feel* like Mushishi if it didn't focus on the intersection of mushi and human life.

I don't expect "closure" as such, given that this is an episodic show, but it'd be nice if the last OVA ties up some of the loose ends. Barring that, I just hope it's good but it's Mushishi so that's expected.

Idk what to say about FSN/Parasyte; I feel I covered it all in other posts already. *shrug* But yeah, those shows are obviously brilliant.

http://moviepilot.com/posts/2015/01/04/comic-books-ya-novels-is-anime-hollywood-s-next-big-source-for-movie-adaptations-2557882?lt_source=external,manual

Could also post in the ToH, but I feel the people here will actually read the article.

How about no? One of the reasons I'm currently uninterested in Hollywood productions is that instead of writing new worlds/characters/stories for us to discover, they continually return to the adaptation well. Much easier to adapt already existing stories and characters than to come up with new ones (not that there are new stories to tell, but you know what I mean), and much less risky from a financial standpoint because a lot of people will see any movie if it has the right names on it. The reason this is a thing and will continue to be a thing is the bloated production/marketing budgets in Hollywood. They spend hundreds of millions now, hoping to break a billion worldwide on everything. In this environment only safe things get made, and the safest things of all are those we already know.

Does not help I feel the things getting the adaptation treatment are awful. "Young adult" novels? Comics? Fucking really? I skipped right past the YA phase and into adult literature, which probably explains my disdain for the genre, and I never read comics. Just never saw the merit in those forms of entertainment when literature and anime/not-shitty live action exist. Video games are a whole other beast, and good vidya adaptations are about as rare as a unicorn.

I realize I probably watch a lot of anime adaptations already, but I feel like it's an easier transition from manga/VNs/light novels to anime. It also helps that I probably never did experience the original thing before the anime, because I might just be too much of a purist. GoT disappoints me sometimes with the liberties it takes, though 90% of the time it's a stellar adaptation of the source material.

http://toybox.io9.com/sailor-moon-crystals-greatest-foe-isnt-the-dark-kingdom-1680125672/+Fahey

This. Just... this. I couldn't say it any better if I tried. Obligatory reminder their regular anime writer (so, not this guy) is kinda bad.

But yeah, I think I'm dropping this. I normally would have dropped it a lot earlier, but I figured the real show would start once the Sailor Guardians all met up. Which I guess it *did* to a point with some legitimately interesting plot points concerning the Moon Kingdom, but we're then treated to these shitty fights to close the first arc. If this were a 48 minute episode, we could have gotten a better fight and still had plenty of time to set up the next arc.

I don't know if the original needed ~40 episodes to cover this material, but it's fairly obvious 14 was too few.

based vid post is based

Feels awkward to have all the posts, etc, etc. That said, I get this thread's inactivity; this season isn't conducive to in-depth discussion of much other than Yurikuma, and most of us watching that are in the chat anyway. Most of my thoughts on this season's shows are obvious and will likely remain that way, so no need to bore people with that.

I was looking through Funi's list of shows last night because three month sub, and these are the ones I'm going to watch before my sub is up:
Cowboy Bebop (obv)
Air
Steins;Gate

...Which isn't all that much. I can easily watch this in a month, let alone three. Is there anything else on Funimation that I might enjoy?

But yeah, I really wanted someone to post so I could post Space Battleship Yamato 2199 stuffs. Thanks to Lightning for recommending the show; it's straight cash. Slight spoilers that I don't feel like hiding.

It's a fairly straightforward show, which isn't a bad thing when the straightforward plot is executed this well. Sure, you know the Yamato is going to win every fight it's in because that's just how most stories go, but unlike Aldnoah, there's tension in pretty much every fight. There are also deaths in said fights, though obviously of supporting characters. Episode 20 was the best fight, in large part because the Yamato was going against a commander that was every bit as competent as their own commander. But yeah, that was one of my favorite episodes in the show because it was a great action episode.

None of the characters really stood out, but they all did what they had to do to move the show forward. My favorite would probably be Yamamoto (one of the pilots); I feel she got the most development on the show and it made her a likable character. Drunken nurse girl is obv mai waifu though. I don't like that they damseled Mori towards the end. What the fuck was that supposed to accomplish? All I can think of is that it was supposed to make Kodai admit his feelings for Mori. Characters not admitting their feelings is one of my biggest annoyances with Japanese media in general and it's probably the reason I hate tsunderes.

EDIT: Actually, Alter wasn't that great of a character either, but its episode (9) was on point. I never expected all these feels from an episode that was about the friendship of two robots. That's arguably the best episode of the show. It was certainly one of my favorites.

I'm a fan of political intrigue, but it was kinda meh here. I would have liked to see the show expound on why the Gamillan rebels were rebelling. You can make an informed guess because militaristic societies tend to suck (they pour their resources into the military, are run by fear, etc), but it would have been nice to see exactly *why*. As it is the best guess I can make is that the Gamillans' leader was a douchebag, which he totally was.

Production values were top-notch. Srsly I've never seen so much CGI in an anime. You know that shit ain't cheap. Beyond that, the artstyle was incredible. I liked that the female characters actually looked realistic, as opposed to being sticks with perky spherical breasts. Of course, the show had to go and stick them in latex(?) suits as opposed to the more "proper" military dress of the males, but whatever. It could have been a lot worse. The music was amazing and this show had the GOAT ED, even if it was only for four episodes.

I also liked the dedication to nautical theming and terminology. Most shows in this vein try really hard to sound futuristic or some shit, but all the nautical stuff makes this feel like a sci-fi set in the Age of Sail, which is awesome.

In any case, it's a really good show and y'all should watch it.

Can't guarantee HD, but these are some good subbed shows they have (I assume you have the subtitles plan).

Attack on Titan
Claymore
Eden of the East
Full Metal Panic stuff
Fullmetal Alchemist stuff
Hellsing Ultimate
Lupin the Third - The Woman Called Fujiko Mine
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
School Rumble
Serial Experiments Lain
Spice and Wolf
The Count of Monte Cristo: Gankutsuou
The Tatami Galaxy
Welcome to the N.H.K.

I'd say these are all good and probably worth a look. The Tatami Galaxy is probably the best of the bunch. There's a pretty wide array of stuff here. Before I wouldn't have suggested comedic stuff but you've liked a few comedic shows that you've watched lately so I suggested them anyway.

I totally forgot to list Spice and Wolf/The Tatami Galaxy idk how I pulled that off. I've watched Eden of the East/the first movie (idk if I care enough to see the second) and AoT/FMA: Brotherhood are on my Netflix queue. Never know how long anime will stay up on Netflix though.

That list does look like it'd give me enough to watch, so thankies. I'll look into it soon-ish.

BASED BOARD SAVING MY SHIT AFTER A POWER OUTAGE

it's 7:00 in the evening, i haven't started a new book or game, chat is kill, not drinking, caught up on all my anime, most are done for the season, and this thread has been dead

so it's time to post about fucking spring anime

spoilers are a given

Continuations:

When I'm taking into consideration how much I like a season, I don't really count them. If I care enough to watch 12+ episodes of an anime, it's safe to say there's *something* about it that I like. That said, the continuations were probably the highlight of the season for me outside of Sound! Euphonium.

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders

My Teenage Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO!

The Labyrinth of Grisaia/The Eden of Grisaia

Assassination Classroom

Originals:

They're what I judge a season on. Even after adding shows mid-season and dropping one because it was meh, I still don't feel this was a great season, but it was watchable. I feel content watching everything I finished, which I guess is the best I can ask for.

Sound! Euphonium

Food Wars

Arslan Senki

Plastic Memories

Seraph of the End

Kekkai Sensen
