Am I really the only one that's watched Akira? Well if you still care to watch it Darkie, it's a serious and dark movie. I still remember this one scene near the end that made me gag a bit because I found it so morbid. I watched it when I was in middle school and haven't watched it since but I probably should revisit it sometime.

No. I watched it so damn long ago that I barely even recall what it was about, so my input would have been useless to Darkie.

Perhaps I should rewatch it, but it would be very low on my list of things to watch.

Episode 23 of Trigun, "Paradise". Anyone who's seen it knows why. Not sure if it's the saddest moment I've seen, but it definitely deserves a mention.

It's also my favorite episode of Trigun.

This little movie called Grave Of The Fireflies. If you haven't heard of it, go here and have a box of tissues ready. That said, I haven't actually watched it, but enough people have said how bone-crushingly depressing it was.

Here's a survey that Funimation put up. I think it's worth filling out if you want to see any of these titles licensed. It's an incredibly short survey.

I put down a few shows, but I'd really like to see Nichijou, Chihayafuru, Mawaru Penguindrum, and AnoHana licensed. Nichijou and AnoHana were two of my favorite shows from 2011 (two of my top four, anyway). Chihayafuru is currently airing and is a fantastic show. Mawaru Penguindrum is from the Revolutionary Girl Utena guy, as far as I know, and has gotten tons of praise. I'd like to see that one.

So yeah, it's a short little survey. Fill it out if you care what Funimation licenses.

Funimation! Y u no license xxxHolic Kei? It's only 13 eps and it's much better than the first season of xxxHolic.

Seems the survey is over now. Anyway, my top 4 choices were Future Diary, AnoHana, Mawaru Penguindrum, and Oretachi no Tsubasa wa Nai. I read the Future Diary manga last Spring and loved it. The anime is very true to its source material. I've watched the other 3 and loved them. I kind of wish I had voted for Nichijou instead of Oretachi for my top 4 but I still haven't finished watching it.

Funimation licensed Haganai.

Haganai is alright. The ending's a bit disappointing though.

Funimation licensed Haganai.

That one is quite popular with fan artists. There's a lot of art with the blonde girl.

I decided to do a review of the InuYasha series. I just finished it. I decided to do one because I love the series and it's not a show that's generally thought of as being that good, so yeah.

InuYasha is a long-running anime series, originally airing 167 episodes and four movies between 2000 and 2004, with another 26 episode series airing between October 2009 and March 2010 to conclude the series. The series follows Kagome Higurashi, who winds up 500 years in the past in Feudal Japan, as she attempts to find all of the shards of the Sacred Jewel along with the other characters she meets along the way.

InuYasha is a series that has been the subject of criticism from much of the anime community. The most common complaints against the series are that there are huge amounts of filler in the anime series and when the plot actually does get moving, it tends to be repetitive. These are valid complaints, and the first things that really come to mind when reviewing this series. It’s not an overstatement to say that almost half of the original series is really unneeded. That’s 83/84 episodes. This is an absurd number of episodes for an anime of this length to have that isn’t needed. By unneeded, I mean that these episodes do not further the overall plot, or “filler episodes”, and even some of the episodes that are related to the main plot end up being completely inconsequential to the story. This is clearly the biggest flaw for the series, and I’m not sure even its biggest fans can deny this.

Now, what does InuYasha do right? Half of a 167 episode anime being filler is a pretty damn big flaw. Can a show recover from this? In my opinion, InuYasha still manages to be a fine show. For starters, I absolutely love the setting and style of the show. The Feudal Japan setting is great, and the heavy fantasy elements make the world pretty engrossing. It’s a world of monks, priestesses, demons, wars, and violence. The animation style at the beginning of the series is fantastic and tends to be pretty dark sometimes. I wasn’t a huge fan of the animation later on in the series, where it obviously got more modernized. I think the show lost part of its charm with that switch. InuYasha: The Final Act, however, uses modern animation (obviously, it’s only two years old) to great effect, and is a fantastic looking anime. The series looks fantastic, and I think this is one show that you can distinguish from in an instance.

The characters are also a strength. Kagome and Inuyasha, our two main protagonists, are a great duo. As far as loud-mouthed, arrogant shonen heroes go, Inuyasha is one of the better ones. Miroku and Sango are also enjoyable characters. Shippo, the last member of the group, tends to be a bit annoying, however, and the filler episodes dedicated to him are easily the worst of the series. Naraku, the main antagonist of the series, is a pretty good villain. He’s the reason why Inuyasha, Miroku, and Sango are all in their pretty lousy predicaments. Just about everything that goes wrong in the show is due to Naraku attempting to get the Sacred Jewel for himself.

I think some of the best characters in this show are Sesshomaru, Kikyo, and Kagura. They’re easily the most interesting characters, and the episodes dedicated to the two former are some of the better episodes in the series. Kagura doesn’t get her own “filler episodes” since she’s mostly Naraku’s pawn, but she’s pretty interesting (and awesome) for her own reasons, which you’ll find out if you watch the show.

The music is mostly good, though repetitive. Through 193 episodes, you hear the same background music very often. Well, at least that music is decent enough. The first and last OP of the first series are pretty good. The rest are just awful, though. Most of them are cheesy, and I made sure to skip them every time. Most of the ED’s are pretty good, with “My Will” by Dream being the standout among them. The OP and ED’s for InuYasha: The Final Act are all good enough, though mostly unspectacular. They look a lot better than the original series’, though.

As for the story, as I briefly stated above, it gets repetitive, especially at the beginning of the series. The story is at its most entertaining in the first season (first 26 episodes), during some of the “Demon Inuyasha” episodes, and then the series makes a pretty good run starting with the Band of Seven arc that begins around episode 120, and barring a bit of filler immediately after that arc, it stays mostly impressive until the end of The Final Act. So the story definitely has very entertaining parts, but the quality is inconsistent. Also, don’t expect a “smart” story. I don’t think anyone would really expect that, since InuYasha never gives off the vibe of being some intelligent show, but yeah, it’d be best if you don’t expect that. It’s just a very entertaining story at its best, and a story that tends to drag on and seem repetitive at its worst.

I think InuYasha is a series that would seriously benefit from a Dragon Ball Z Kai treatment. For those that don’t know, Dragon Ball Z Kai removed much of the filler and unnecessary parts of Dragon Ball Z and cut 193 episodes down to 97 (Kai doesn’t include the Buu saga at all). While a lot of these “unnecessary” parts of InuYasha are still fun to watch, they definitely were unneeded and wound up ruining the series for many. I personally didn’t mind episodes focusing on individual characters (except for Shippo episodes – those sucked), but I realize I am in the minority that enjoyed these and most would have preferred that the series were more focused.

It’s probably worth noting that just about all of this filler occurs in the first series. The Final Act is actually a very well done series, and if the entire series had been handled this way, it would probably be considered a great series instead of a mediocre one by many. Ultimately, InuYasha is a flawed series. I do, however, think it’s a fun experience, and I personally love the series. I acknowledge it has a huge flaw, but I urge anyone to at least give it a try and see how they like it for themselves.

*For anybody interested, I believe watching these episodes will get you most of the main plot while cutting out a lot of the filler episodes:

1-7, 9-10, 14-16, 18-26 29-30, 32-37, 39-45, 51-54, 66-67, 72-74, 79-81, 102-126, 141-146, 149-159, 165-167, The Final Act

Excellent review Lightning and this also reminded me that I have to finish watching InuYasha.

In other news, I finished Nichijou. I should have voted for it instead of We Without Wings. IF ONLY I HAD FINISHED IT SOONER!!! Definitely buying it whenever it comes to the states.
