Sexual Orientation: Not Picky

Wasn't it supposedly the creators wanted to make something with as much boobs in it as possible?

DAT STORY TIEM

Been watching Higurashi lately, and it's fantastic (hence my avatar).

The most famous thing about it is "OMG BR00TAL" but actually, for the most part it's not, like most things. A lot of it is almost a detective story with a huge emphasis on the psychological side of the killings.

Each arc resets time to before something happened, and almost acts like a "What If" on the same story. It's not exactly the same each time, as some characters change or are more fleshed out in continuous arcs, but it basically gives the writers an excuse to do whatever the hell they want in each arc.

Interestingly, the writers say that each arc is linked and actually happen, which makes no sense cuz some characters actually die in each. That said, it's fun to try and link arcs together (which, of course, don't mention other ones).

The anime pulls off a very good haunting atmosphere. I watched it around 2am with no lights on and I was scared shitless when I was going to bed. A few episodes into each arc, you're on edge all the time and it's really quite creepy. Also, it's brutal. Really, really brutal.

So yeah, I'd advise watching this. Over the summer, I'm watching more anime. I'm planning on watching Madoka Magica when the English dub is completed on the 12th of June.

Just wait for the twist towards the end of the first season of Higurashi. Shit will make sense.

Here's a little Summer 2012 preview chart thingy.

Not a whole lot is catching my eye right now. Arcana Famiglia looks like it could be not-terrible, I suppose. P.A. Works has a show, Tari Tari, but I'm not digging it based off the picture and the premise. I may give it a shot since it's P.A. Works, but iunno. Binbougami ga! looks like it could be alright. Sunrise has been involved in some of the best anime ever and it looks like something I wouldn't mind taking a chance on. But yeah, this is looking like a "wait and see what people like" season.

And the Code Geass OVA, Nunnally in Wonderland, is coming out apparently, which sounds lulzy as shit.

You guys know I can't stand to watch things one week at a time and that I only really do so with the best shows.

I'll just wait and see what's well-received and what isn't. Perhaps another Madoka Magica will come out of this bunch - That is to say, something well-received by most everyone into anime. >.>

Got other shows to catch up on, anyway. No big deal.

And no, still haven't decided what to watch after Kanon, Lightning.

I'm way more interested in those OVAs: History's Strongest Disciple, Tales of Symphonia, KissXSis, and To-Love-Ru Darkness (finally).

Well, I've heard of Sword Art Online because of its similarities with .hack. Reading the synopsis, it does sound a bit like .hack//SIGN (person is trapped in an MMORPG and must escape or die in real life). I'll probably check it out.

Only other ones I'm really interested in are Persona 4 The Animation: No One is Alone and Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki, and those will probably take a while to get released online.

Oh yeah, the last P4A episode is being released. I'll watch that.

I didn't do movies. I, too, am looking forward to Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki (which I will be calling The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki from now on because fuck that shit). I'm also looking forward to the Berserk movie and I'll most likely watch the Fairy Tail movie, even though it'll probably be irrelevant to the plot like most of the movies for long-running shonen shows.

Two other shows I may give a shot are Muv-Luv Alternative and Chouyaku Hyakunin Isshu.

Not too many to watch for me. I'll most likely watch Tari Tari, Sword Art Online and Arve Rezzle.

Crunchyroll started announcing their summer line-up pretty early this year, it seems.

So far they've announced Yuru Yuri 2, Oda Nobuna, and Muv-Luv Total Eclipse.

I finished Fate/Zero on Saturday and then started Fate/stay night right after, which I finished earlier today.

Fate/Zero remained superb all the way until the end. My thoughts haven't changed much for the series. It remained one of the best-looking shows ever. The music remained great. The characters were essentially the same, though we got to know them better over these last 12 episodes. The plot picked up and stayed at a great pace the entire time. The action was great.

If I had any gripes, it would be this:

As for Fate/stay night, I found it to still be an incredibly enjoyable experience. It's clearly not on Fate/Zero's level in most ways, but compared to the hate I've been seeing for it recently (most likely due to people holding it to Fate/Zero's standards), it was very pleasantly surprising. The two biggest things I hear about it (in a negative sense) is that Shirou is an obnoxious lead character and that this is mostly action without great storytelling.

First of all, I didn't find Shirou to be that bad at all. The only two things were that when he yelled "Saber!" when she got hurt, it was a pretty loud and annoying yell, and he kept going on about how Saber shouldn't fight because she's a girl. Seemed pretty damn silly since Saber (and all Servants) is an incredibly strong fighter and could beat the shit out of Shirou in her sleep. But yeah, neither of these came close to ruining the show for me and I still managed to like Shirou despite them. The first reason is silly to hate a character over, anyway. And when I hear that Shirou is obnoxious, I thought he was going to be loud-mouthed and full of himself (see: shonen heroes like Naruto, Ichigo, Inuyasha, and whoever else), which thankfully wasn't the case. He has a pretty likable character.

The characters in the show were generally enjoyable. I actually enjoyed the light-hearted moments that took place as Shirou's house. The animation is fine. Obviously not up to Fate/Zero's standards, but it's six years older and wasn't from the studio that did Kara no Kyoukai (which has the best animation you'll ever see). The music was pretty good, too. Judging it on its own and without holding it to the ridiculous standards that Fate/Zero has introduced, it's a great show and worth watching. The transition from watching Fate/Zero to watching Fate/stay night was also ridiculously smooth for the former being a prequel animated six years after.

Now, as I was obviously thinking, "What would Ufotable have done differently if they were to make their own adaptation now?" throughout parts of the show, I couldn't help but to compare it to Fate/Zero. Just some thoughts (major spoilers from both shows):

Spoiler: click to toggle

I don't pin these problems on Studio Deen, who did the adaptation of FSN. I think it's likely that Gen Urobuchi, the writer of the Fate/Zero light novels and the anime adaptation, just wrote a more serious and darker story than Nasu did with Fate/stay night, which was an eroge visual novel. The guy also wrote Madoka Magica and he has a reputation for making sure every character's life sucks in the things he writes (and judging from Fate/Zero, Requiem for the Phantom, and Madoka Magica, I suppose I can't argue with that claim). Still, if Ufotable ever does do their own adaptation of FSN, as many fans are begging for, I hope they follow the tone they created with Fate/Zero and limit the comedic and fanservice elements in FSN's story. After reading rough overviews of each of the three routes in the Fate/stay night VN, I think it would be cool if they took some of the events from each in their own adaptation. Fans of the series would hate that, I'm sure, but whatever I don't care.

Anyways, awesome series and I'm sad I don't have anything else to watch from the series at this point. There's Unlimited Blade Works, but I'll save that for another time.
