I hope you'll enjoy it, David. It's easily one of my favourite shows. It just has it all, action, excitement, romance, humour and it's just far fetched enough that it isn't too much.

Been watching Chuck and Dexter, loving both. Started back watching Doctor Who, on the 4th series now. BUT what I came here to say I was watching/watched was the 50th anniversary in theaters last night. Never geeked out so much at a theater.

Had an urge to start watching The Mole again because it's the best reality show ever, but the Australian version just isn't as good as the U.S. version. Lower production costs, less focus on players, and no Anderson Cooper (seriously, best host ever). But it's still pretty addictive.

Is there such a thing as a casual Doctor Who fan? Everyone I meet who's into it is REALLY into it. Idk if this is because the people I meet have obsessive personalities, if the show inspires rabid fanaticism, or what.

I mean, you can find casual fans of everything else. This show? I haven't.

Also, to make this post related, hit me with your *best* Netflix recommendations. I mean the cream of the crop, must-watch shows.

As a rabid Doctor Who fan, I can confirm this. Though I try to keep it under control on this site.

As for what I am currently watching: I am like, one of the only people still watching SHIELD it seems. Most people I know go "oh yeah that show looks cool, I keep meaning to watching it" whenever I mention it. I'm also keeping up with Supernatural and attempting to keep up with Arrow. Cause apparently the CW makes SOME good shows. Also currently making my way through Arrested Development on Netflix. When I finish that I'm probably gonna keep going with Star Trek TOS and TNG, Luther, and Wallander.

I think that's because the not-casual fans are pretty loud/obnoxious about their not-casualness, and the casual ones (which I'm sure exist, 'cause we have a few here, unless they just repress their urges around us) are too casual to bother letting everyone know that they're casual.

Also, I'll recommend a few things because they all have flaws depending on who you ask.

1.) Arrested Development -- This one probably benefits most from being able to stream it whenever you want. Yeah, it's a sitcom, but it's unlike any other that I've seen. Lots of jokes and plot things reference previous episodes or foreshadow later ones, so streaming helps with that. It's smart, funny, and there's actually a plot. I don't see any of those three things in other sitcoms (well, I'm trying Archer now but I haven't seen enough to judge it yet, and I don't really watch a ton of sitcoms because of the quality of most of the ones I have seen but ANYWAY).

2.) Battlestar Galactica -- I'll quote a review. That's easier:
Quote:

You've finished The Wire box set? You'd like something else that is just as good as "the greatest show ever in the history of television" (© all Guardian journalists) but you're not quite sure where to go next? How about a series that's as passionate and intelligent as The West Wing when debating war and terrorism, or as emotionally articulate about death, loss and love as Six Feet Under, or as trippy, mystical and deliciously baffling as Twin Peaks? A series that's not afraid to take you on an epic, existential journey during which you'll grow to love characters who are wrangling with metaphysical issues such as the nature of humanity and god? A series that does all this while never losing sight of the idea that television should be entertaining? But what's that? You don't do spaceships? Oh ...

Now I know you're probably fine with sci-fi/spaceships, but the point here is that it really is that good and it's not just a bunch of people who like some weird show with a stupid name. Also, this review was posted right before the show ended. A lot of people hated the ending, but I thought it was great and Asfan liked it too, I think. There is one very specific part of the ending that people -- even the producer -- didn't like, but it has absolutely nothing to do with anything (sorry for vagueness) so I don't know why people got so worked-up about it. Anyway.

3.) Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Angel -- Hey, what a surprise. I put this last (even though these aren't really ranked) because they're the longest and have more flaws than the other two. I love them and they're probably my favorite shows, but they weren't consistently awesome. The characters (except Kennedy, and maybe Connor, but they come in later) are all great and will easily keep you going through the not-spectacular episodes. The spectacular episodes are quite good, though. Many of them cause tears of sadness! Others cause joy. Yay.

EDIT: Apparently I'm making this long post longer. Mac, LAD and I are both watching SHIELD! So uh if you do want to talk about it with someone, we're both usually in the chat. I watch Arrow, and he's planning on doing that sometime. Anyway, I have that problem with people IRL, too. One friend is pretty good with stuff, but the other one who watches stuff I watch ends up weeks behind because he randomly decides to rewatch things he's already rewatched.

I think that's because the not-casual fans are pretty loud/obnoxious about their not-casualness, and the casual ones (which I'm sure exist, 'cause we have a few here, unless they just repress their urges around us) are too casual to bother letting everyone know that they're casual.

That explanation would make sense.

It's just, I always see things like "OMG NEW DOCTOR WHO WAS AMAZING FANGASMING SO HARD" as opposed to something like "I enjoyed the new episode of Doctor Who." I don't see much of a middle ground. I suppose it exists, but liking Doctor Who isn't a huge deal to these people, so I'm just left with like the ten-fifteen obsessives on FB/Twitter/etc. And it's a constant thing. Not really exhausting or anything (it's good to see passionate people), but enough to make me curious about the existence of casuals.

Also doesn't help nobody I know in real life likes it. They're all fairly casual about things, at least as far as I can tell. My internet friends tend to be more obsessive/passionate people, probably because it's their only outlet.

As for your recommendations:
Buffy/Angel are in my queue. They'll be the biggest time investment, so they're last.

I think I've seen an episode or two of Arrested Development. This was years ago, so I probably wouldn't remember anything, but I didn't think it was half bad. It got me to laugh, which is something sitcoms generally don't do.

Yeah, I'm fine with sci-fi. That review would have been better without all the name-dropping though. Everyone who wants to give weight to their opinions/reviews now name-drops The Wire. I love the show but it's an annoying trend. >.> Anyway, I can give this one a try.

Pretty much how I feel about fanbases. They are universally bad. Some are worse than others.

Yeah I tend to keep my Doctor Who passion hidden when I'm around people, but on Tumblr or at cons I tend to let loose. I'm not nearly as terrible as most fans though, I promise.

That review... kind of exaggerates. Can't comment on The West Wing, but can't say Battlestar Galactica holds up against Six Feet Under and Twin Peaks in those respective categories, since I don't think anything matches or even comes all that close to those shows in those regards. Still, great show and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. Unless, you know, you don't do spaceships. I guess. The series name kind of did put me off it for a bit, but it was definitely worth it to watch.

Also, y u no watch THE SHIELD?

I'm also watching SHEILD and Supernatural. Although I've been watching Supernatural since day 1, so that's nothing new.

As for Doctor Who, I'm not entirely obsessive over it, but not many shows have a 50th anniversary episode, and not many shows have one of their episodes in theater. It was just really exciting to see a tribute to a 50 year old show and to all the actors that have played the Doctor.

Yeah, but it's... elsewhere.

Though I guess there are plenty of shows I'd tell you to watch before The Shield (even with that kickass second-to-only-Six-Feet-Under finale). But eventually...
