Re-watched 'Chuck' because something about that show was super enjoyable for me. I stopped after the 4th season though because I feel like that would've been the perfect ending for the series. I really didn't care for the 5th season much, and the finale was awful, imo. It felt like they didn't really plan for a 5th season and unexpectedly got the go-ahead from the network. After I completed that, I watched 'The Guild'. This was originally a web-series written and directed by Felicia Day. I absolutely adore her so I gave it a shot. It kinda started off slow but I really enjoyed it after the first 'season'. Oh yeah, each season was about 90 minutes so it was almost like 5 movies. Now I'm in the middle of 'House'. Somewhere midway through Season 2 right now. I'm enjoying it thus far. I like how House is unlikeable yet likeable. Kinda weird for me as I really haven't come across many main characters like that. |

Watched the first ep of True Detective last night, watched the final seven today. I liked it. Idk what to compare it to other than The Killing, but the story is definitely much better than The Killing's. Dis show is supr srs, though. I didn't realize it until it happened, but the first time I laughed (well, chuckled, I guess) was at the end of the penultimate episode. All I want from the next season is some more reasons to smile. I was actually thinking that it might be cool if the tone of the show changed each season too (dark season one, maybe slightly lighter season two, musical comedy season three, etc.) but I guess that'd only alienate current fans and not really attract new fans, so it's probably a bad idea. Anyway, hope to watch season two week-by-week instead of in one sitting like this. Gotta watch the internet do its thing and solve the murder before the show does. |

I haven't posted in this thread for a hella long time so I'm gonna allocate space to shows as I see fit. Edit: I realized I can assign arbitrary ratings to undermine the actual impressions, so I'm gonna do that. Top of the Lake (All current seasons [1]): What is it? - Season-long detective drama (as in the whole season is about one case) centered around Elisabeth Moss, a missing pregnant child, and a weird as fuck rural community. Pros - Strong lead characters and acting, satisfying payoff Cons - Prominent but confusing and unnecessary subplots, slow start Should I watch it? - If you're a big fan of dark, intricate crime dramas, probably. If you need humor or are uncomfortable with sexual assaults being a major plot point, you should probably steer clear. I'm not sure I would put this on the top of a recommendation list, but if you just really want to watch a somber, slow-built but not very long mystery, go for it. Notes: A second season has been announced. 7.5/10 The Killing (Season 4): What is it? - The final season of the show critics call, "too slow," and, "used to be good." Follows Linden and Holder as they investigate the murder of a military academy cadet's entire family. In the rain. With sadness. Pros - Solid case with lots of feels, military school setting is cool, all those twists Cons - Recurring plotline from season 3 is pretty annoying for a while, the epilogue is Harry Potter 8-style awful Should I watch it? - You need to watch season 3 for a fairly major plot point to make sense, so assuming you've already watched the first three seasons, there's no reason not to. Notes: Critics kinda bashed the hell out of this season and I honestly don't know why. The usual complaints against the show are that it's too slow and too joyless, but at least the first problem gets alleviated by the fact that it's only 6 episodes. I didn't see any drop off in quality in this season, other than that fucking epilogue. 8/10 The Young Doctor's Notebook (Season 1): What is it? - Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe play the same doctor several years apart, at a rural Russian hospital in 1917 (Jon Hamm is either a hallucination in the current day or not a hallucination in a frame story). Pros - Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe Cons - Just not really that notable for anything else Should I watch it? - I wouldn't personally recommend it. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't very good either. Not a lot happens. Notes: A second season aired apparently. idk. 4/10 Rectify (Season 1) What is it? - A guy on death row gets exonerated by new evidence and tries to reassimilate to a town that still thinks he's guilty and the changes in the world he's missed out on. BUT IS HE REALLY INNOCENT? Pros - Good acting, interesting concept Cons - Insanely slow pacing (and I just recommended The Killing), bizarre subplots that don't really relate to anything Should I watch it? - I was not a fan. I kept expecting something big to happen and it just never did. The weird sideplots are I guess there for metaphoric reasons, but I didn't understand them, and the main plot hardly went anywhere at all. I don't think I'm gonna bother finishing this, but season 2 is on Netflix if you're a bigger fan of slow-burning family dramas with heavy symbolism than I am. 5/10 Black Mirror (All current seasons [2]: What is it? - A modern (but really short, at 3 episodes per season) Twilight Zone centered around modern culture and technology's dark side. Pros - The pilot, season 2 Cons - The other two episodes of season 1 Should I watch it? - Yes, if you can tolerate some grim storylines. The pilot has a tendency to scare people off despite actually being a really great episode (I heard about this show from a friend who watched the first episode and said it was "the worst thing she'd ever watched" and spent the rest of the night almost throwing up). If the pilot makes you question what the fuck you're watching, rest safe knowing the rest of the series isn't like that, but also that you're a bad person for not liking that episode. Notes: It's kind of hard to tacitly review this since every episode is its own story so the quality fluctuates rapidly. My problem with the second episode is that the setting is radically different from the rest of the episodes, taking place in some virtual dystopian future, and it drags out past a perfectly good ending to a weird and kind of annoying one. The third episode is actually most people's favorite, but I thought it was kind of boring. My favorite goes to the S2E2 "White Bear" which has one of the most jawdropping plot twists and scathing critiques of the modern attitude (it's hard to describe what I mean without giving too much away) I've ever seen. 9/10 The Fall (All current seasons [2]): What is it? - Irish detective Dana Scully plays cat-and-mouse with a murderously facial-haired Christian Grey. Pros - Great lead characters and actors, build-ups lead to satisfying payoffs, well-written storylines that all coalesce Cons - Season 1 is a little slow, a few misguided subplots Should I watch it? - If you're in the market for a short murder drama with possibly iconic characters, yes. Note that this isn't a mystery because you know who's behind it and more-or-less why essentially the whole time. It's about watching the two sides, the investigators, and the criminal, trying to achieve opposite goals at the same time. 8.5/10 The X-Files (All current seasons [9]): What is it? - A rip-off of Fringe. Pros - Some of the most iconic TV and best characters ever, writing that manages to balance comedy and drama, dat will-they-won't-they romance, Vince Gilligan, literally every actor in the world makes a guest appearance at some point Cons - Probably too long, overarching plot gets muddled and hard to follow at some points, some episodes completely miss, Mulder isn't in 26 episodes Should I watch it? - Do you have a shitton of free time? Then yeah. Notes: See Snow's post above. Additional notes: Don't believe the lies about seasons 8 and 9. They're definitely different and a tad disappointing, but they aren't bad. Season 9 is actually the only season I would say has no bad episodes. It doesn't really have any great ones either, but the whole "MULDER ISN'T THERE; SHOW IS BAD" wagon missed out on a lot of good TV. 10/10 Californication (Seasons 1-3): What is it? - Mulder has a lot of sex and talks about it a lot while also engaging in every other vice, which makes it hard to raise his daughter and reconnect with his estranged lover. Pros - Often funny but still manages some really good dramatic moments Cons - NOBODY'S LIFE IS THIS SEX-CENTRIC (not just the main character either, EVERY character talks about sex at least every fourth line) Should I watch it? - This is pretty dependent on you. I'm not crazy about it even though I like basically every episode I watch. If you can take the endless cavalcade of nudity and casual mentions of analingus, there's a compelling story about arrested development, addiction, and disappointing everyone around you. Note: I've heard that post-season-3 drops off, so I'll keep you updated on what happens. I personally found it pretty hard to binge watch this (and comedies in general)*, so I'm taking a little break to watch other stuff so I don't burn out on it. I feel like the hypersexualization thing wouldn't have been such an issue for me if I hadn't watched half the first season in one sitting. 7.5/10 *For reference, I watched all 202 45-minute episodes of The X-Files and both movies in just over a month, during school. It took me slightly less time to watch 26 30-minute episodes of Californication. Edited by DarkFlashlight, Mar 25 2015, 03:30 AM.

Finished Book 2 of Legend of Korra all in one day. Excluding the time I watched 11 straight episodes of Attack on Titan last week, this is the most dedicated I've been on a TV show since Madoka Magica which was 2 years ago. |

Orphan Black, Silicon Valley, Mad Men, and Game of Thrones all having new seasons right now is just blissful. It'd be even better if I had time to watch all of them (okay I have time but idk how to manage it effectively), but finals, so I'll catch up on Mad Men and GoT when I'im done next week. |

Sorta-kinda-vague spoiler for Mad Men. Perhaps it's too early to say for sure, but why the fuck is Pete the one getting the happy ending? And why do that to Betty on Mother's Day? Matt Weiner is a sick fuck. |

I'm not convinced it will be a happy ending. One of the themes of this show has been "the more things change, the more they stay the same". Pete and Trudy weren't exactly happy in their marriage, especially once Trudy caught Pete cheating. I think she always knew, but in those days, you had to be discreet about extramarital affairs. Pete hasn't really grown as a character IMO (course, he hasn't been given any development after the divorce); I feel he'd just go back to cheating on Trudy as always and the same issues would be present. We're talking about Duck Phillips here. I don't think this is a done deal by any means. The guy has always struck me as a snake oil salesman, and this all sounds way too good to be true. I never liked Betty much (too judgmental for her own good, never had to work for a thing, etc), but this last episode brought a surprising amount of feels. Then again, she has gotten better over the last season or two, defying Henry and deciding to go to college and study psychology. Maybe that's part of it. We won't get to see how she changes now because, well, you know. Also, I figured Don would be suspected of stealing the money. Even though he threw down some cash, had some drinks with the veterans, and told part of his story, he was an outsider and would always be one. That's just how it is in small towns. If something goes wrong, the person nobody knows is always the suspect, even if it makes little to no sense. It made no sense here because Don was positively hammered and the bartender wasn't, but that's not how drunk people in small towns think. I do wonder if he'll survive. I'm leaning towards "he'll live", but where he goes from here, nobody knows. Until Sunday, anyway. |
