Well, he didn't win the game he was in, but big dude with beard who could fish and came close to winning All-Stars makes me think of Rupert. =p

I remember years ago there was a badass big dude with a cool beard that was a genius fisherman and could just dive into the water with a spear and come out with like 10 fish on it. I think he won that year, and then he came back for an all star year and came close to winning that too
You're probably thinking of Rupert.

He didn't end up winning Pearl Islands (his original season) but he's come back for Allstars, HvV, and some other season iirc.

I just remember him as the guy who was guarding his raft when the opposing tribe set their stuff next to him and walked off, so he just ended up selling all their shoes and shit.

Offchance I thought you might mean Richard Hatch who won the first season ever, but I'm just remembering him catch a shark by letting it bite him and then just... biting it back. But I'm pretty sure you mean Rupert.

EDIT: well fuck I didn't see there were more posts.

I just assumed Survivor was dumb because it's popular and sort of a reality show, but you're all making it sound exciting. Now I want to watch it, but only CBS All Access has the entire series, and I'm not subscribing to that... until the new Star Trek series starts because it'll be exclusively online.

Oh, we're actually talking about Survivor. Um, I watched it with my family waaaay back when the first few seasons were originally airing because we would just watch it together in the summer when we got back from the pool or these neighborhood parties that we used to have. I don't really remember a ton outside of shoe stealing and Richard being naked and falling into a fire.

Richard being naked
Richard was forever naked. I feel like for All-Stars, they told him to get naked more or something, because every challenge he was just, immediately take off clothes. I also remember during one challenge, he rubbed up against Sue, and then the next day she quit the show and considered suing for sexual harassment.

falling into a fire.

Iunno if you meant Richard fell into the fire. I remember that happening, but I know it wasn't Richard. Had to look up the person's name, Michael Skupin in season two. That was really awful. Apparently they had a later season where they invited back the people who had to leave for medical emergencies, so that's pretty cool, I guess.

Oh, I guess Yau-Man also worked for the College of Chemistry at Berkeley back in the day. I do remember during freshman year trying to find his office but I never ran into the guy. Dude got fucked on the truck deal but it looks like he did well for himself anyways.

For those who don't know about the truck thing - basically, Yau-Man was a super likable guy, very eccentric but controlled the game fairly and honestly - enormous threat to win the million. During the final 6 there was a reward challenge to win a car and Yau-Man won it, but made a deal with one of the remaining contestants named Dreamz who grew up homeless, didn't have much - let alone a car. In exchange Yau-Man asked that, if Dreamz won individual immunity during the Final 4 then he'd give it to Yau-Man. Dreamz agreed.

Of course then Dreamz's alliance tried to vote him out but I think Yau-Man Hidden Immunity Idoled to make the Final 6 and then won individual immunity to get to the Final 4. Dreamz wins individual immunity during the Final 4 but reneges on the deal at the last minute and Yau-Man gets voted out. Dreamz gets 0 votes in the Final 3 and Yau-Man's long-time ally Earl gets all 9 jury votes. Fucked up way for it to end but Yau-Man said it was a risk he took giving Dreamz the truck.

And yeah, I really love Sandra in this season too. She's so sassy - I just wish she and Courtney could've stayed together longer. I mean, the way the Villains tribe played out was infinitely better than 6v3 would have lended itself to becoming (Tyson v. Parvati v. Russell will forever be my favorite Tribal Council because holy shit that's probably the biggest HII play ever) but we lost Courtney because of it =[

Survivor's a surprisingly intricate game for how simple it is. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the format so generally it's structured like this:

At the beginning the castaways (usually... 18, I want to say) get divided into 2 tribes that live on opposite parts of the island - they only interact during challenges. Each episode is 1 reward challenge - could be a flint to make fire, shelter materials, food, letters from home, etc. Things your tribe definitely wants and will compete for.

The other challenge during an episode is for "immunity". The losing tribe gets sent to "Tribal Council" where they all vote for someone to leave the tribe and game. Obviously if your tribe keeps winning immunity challenges you, personally, are safe from going home. In this stage, generally the people voted out are weaker during challenges (that's generally the first to go) but then the voting starts turning to who's on the fringe in the alliance game. Obviously if you have a group of people to vote for a designated person then you'll domineer the vote and don't have to worry about going home. Dominant alliances kinda rule over the game for awhile there but they aren't infallible and everyone's vote counts the same.

About halfway through the tribes merge into one and all further challenges (reward&immunity) are purely individual. This stage is weird because, while generally the only alliances so far are the tribes themselves, you see a lot of (former) Tribe A v. (former) Tribe B voting. People flip all the time to the other side, though, which is risky because if that alliance does end up eliminating everyone else do they start eating at themselves or just vote out the outsider from the other tribe?

At the heart of Survivor - which makes the game very interesting - is that the million isn't earned by "last man standing". Around the final ~9-10 or so, people who get voted out become part of the "jury" and they are the ones who vote for the winner when it gets down to the final 2 or 3. This facet basically redefines what a "threat" is. Liars and cheaters may be able to get further on in the game by manipulating votes but when their victims get put on the jury there's no way in hell they're going to vote to give the million to the person who just backstabbed them and put them out of the running. The social game is super tricky - getting further in the game is a balancing act of trying to stay in control of the vote (via alliances) but staying in control of the jury, too. A lot of people get dragged further on in the game - not because they're in cahoots with people, but because they've made such bad social moves that they stand no chance of winning the jury's votes, and that's someone you want next to you at the end.

It's a very interesting social game. Winners come in all sizes, use all kinds of strategies, and watching it unfold is always suspenseful. I'd give a nod for Season 20 (HvV) if you're going to only watch one season - it consistently ranks #1/#2 in peoples' lists of their favorites. I think other highly-rated ones are Cagayan and Micronesia (fans v. favorites).

I finished Survivor: Cagayan. It had superb reviews and it delivered.

The Winner

Doesn't blow every season of Survivor out of the water as a "oh man nothing else is worth watching" but I absolutely see why people mark it as a top 5 season. Perhaps it sated the binge I've been on for the past couple of weeks.
