I probably won't use this thread that much, if at all, since most of what I read is manga. I do have a few books in the closet that I haven't read/finished yet. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Ian Fleming's Diamonds Are Forever, Thomas Harris' Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, and Stephen King's Cell. Maybe someday, I'll stop being lazy and read them. |

The last book I finished reading was Schindler's List. I think after I finish up on Superfreakonomics, I'm going to start on The Hunger Games, or I'm going to read Crime and Punishment. Recommendations? |

Misc. replies: @Mac -- I'll remember to check out Jailbird, then. And 1984 of course :P. Aaand like you, I also want to read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and the others. @pwner -- Woot, Lovecraft. I should read more of his stuff too (meaning, more than just Cthulhu). |

Welp, looks like we're reading Lord of the Flies in English class. Have to finish the first chapter over the weekend, but I might just read the whole thing so I don't have to worry about it anymore. I've been reading Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea kinda slowly, but I plan to have that finished next week I guess. Also, can anyone recommend any good thrillers? I like them in TV/movie form, but haven't really read any. I found one called Coma by Robin Cook that sounds interesting, but if anyone else has suggestions that's cool too. |

The Lord of the Flies is pretty good, and shouldn't really take you that long to finish. I think the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books are thrillers, hold on.... *wikis*..... Wikis says they are Crime, Mystery, and Thriller. So I suggest those. I haven't read too many other thrillers, but I think the Hannibal Lecter books are thrillers too, and I've heard those are good. |

Hey now! If I made a NASCAR thread, I'm sure there would be some whiners in the first few pages. |

@Mac -- I guess that's another reason to put them closer to the top of my list, then. @nascargo -- Not necessarily... I ignore the threads I'm not interested in (mainly sports threads and most of the stuff in Forum Games). But maybe I'm just weird for not wanting to whine about stuff just because other people like it and I don't. :/ |

There might be, but you'd be well within your rights to tell them to gtfo. It makes no sense to go into a thread like this (or that, as it may be) and proclaim that you don't partake in the activity in question. It doesn't add to the discussion. ANYWAY. Read Paul Bloom's How Pleasure Works. I *liked* it and all, but I got the idea rather early on: Pleasure is completely and utterly irrational. For all the effort expended to logically explain pleasure, he didn't come any closer to doing so than anyone ever IMO. There's also a lot about "essentialism", which he defines as "the essence an object has". I understand this idea is totally irrational (even if it's not total bullshit), so I don't need to keep objects around merely "because they're mine". The memories are in my head, not some thing. Finished A Game of Thrones. Where do I start? I suppose with ALL THE CHARACTERS. I'm finally starting to get a grasp on who is who, all the relationships, and what characters (of those that have been introduced, anyway) are a part of what houses. It only took eight hundred pages. Early favorites are Jon and Tyrion. I suppose like Tyrion, I have a spot in my heart for cripples, bastards, and broken things. I normally wouldn't give a fuck about eight hundred pages of power games (or the game of thrones, as they call it) and highborn characters, but GRRM has a way of making even the highest born characters people you can relate to. Also Outliers. Amazing book, the gist of which is pretty much, "exceptional people are not inherently exceptional; they just had better opportunities for a number of reasons." No one factor is enough to make someone exceptional, up to and including that favorite of everyone everywhere, "hard work". But given a lot of opportunities that most people don't have, hard work helps to further separate an exceptional individual from the pack. |

I thought it was hard to keep up all the characters too. Mainly all the Ser's and Maester's. I also like Tyrion and Jon, and also Arya. Despite her very young age she seems very strong/independent, which has obviously helped her. |
