Finally finished the Inheritance Cycle. I think Paolini did a great job tying everything up, considering there were so many things he had to resolve. A lot of people told me the ending sucked, but I liked it. I feel like he ended it right. It was better than the Hunger Games' ending for sure. |

http://www.flavorwire.com/298020/30-books-...urning-30?all=1 Only read 7. Still need to finish an 8th. Meh. Whatever. Not a huge fan of these sorts of lists. Discussion of them tends to turn into circle-jerking pretty quickly, everyone has their own taste, etc. I wouldn't recommend, say, Catcher in the Rye to one of my peers - That book appeals to teenagers for pretty obvious reasons. (It's also the reason I'll likely never get around to it - I can't relate to it anymore.) Anyway, books from it that I do intend to read: The Iliad/The Odyssey The Road Cat's Cradle Lolita Lord of the Flies Don Quixote The Invisible Man Most of these are likely free on Amazon due to their status as classics, yay. The others I can just request from the library; odds are they'll have them. Books I have queued up: John Sandford - Buried Prey A Lucas Davenport novel is always a decent read. Not the greatest ever, but it's not Patterson, either. Patricia Cornwell - Port Mortuary and Red Mist We'll see how this goes - Hoping this series recovers from its decade-long emo tailspin, for some reason. I didn't pay money for these, otherwise I'd be a total dumbass. If I don't get through them due to more shitty emoness, I don't get through them. Whatever. Also, finished A Dance With Dragons a while ago. Idk, I want to say I finished pretty early into the second season of the GoT show. So now I'm four seasons ahead of the curve. I can also re-read one/all books before a new season to refresh my memory/laugh at the show's latest fuckups. Nice. Anyway, as for the book itself... STILL MORE NOTHING. Okay, some things happen and it features characters I actually liked, such as Arya. But it's fairly obvious that these books are setup for whatever is going to happen in The Winds of Winter/whatever book seven is going to be. I can only hope that the payoff is worth the ~1,700 pages of setup I read (and the two seasons of setup I'll watch, assuming the TV adaptation lasts that long - which it should because the ratings are great for HBO). |

You never read Lord of the Flies, Ro? Also, I have begun Game of Thrones. I'm 200 pages in, which seems like a lot normally, but it's like, not even a quarter of the book... Also, so many characters. I like it, but holy shit the characters. |

No, I went to a high school that assigned maybe one book and one Shakespeare play a year. Nobody expects kids out of a rural high school to be scholars. You'll start getting used to so many characters if you either finish the book or start watching the show. I'd recommend both obviously; I do think it helps to be able to put faces to the characters. |

I'm on a 6,5 hour long train ride to the city I'm moving to, going to hopefully sign a contract tonight so we have a place to stay! I figured I'd get some reqding done this summer. I've got three books I want to read. "Doppler"and "Volvo Lastvagnar" by the Norwegian author Erlend Loe. I've read some bits and pieces from the books and some of his other work in Norwegian class. It's some funny, odd and interesting stuff. Looking forward to reading that shit. The third book I want to read is called "Hundreåringen som klatret ut av vinduet og forsvant" or in English: "The hundred year old that climbed out of the window and dissapeared". It's about a 100 year old man that gets put in a home, and when he turns 100 he decides to escape and go on adventures like he did in his younger days. There are also flashbacks to when he was younger and to big events in the 1900s. Sounds like a pretty interesting and exciting book. And according to my girlfriend, it's pretty absurd. Woo! |

Finished up "Doppler" today. What a great book! Actually the first book I've read in a long time without being "forced". Pretty excited to read the follow up; "Volvo Lastvagnar". I highly recommend this book (assuming there's an English version) if you want a short, fun and great book. =] |

Finished Game of Thrones and am getting along with Clash of Kings. I've got the characters down by now, but I love this series. So fucking much. Also, I read a book called Shada. It's a Doctor Who special that was written by Douglas Adams of Hitchiker fame (he also wrote a few Doctor specials), but it wasn't finished for certain industry reasons. It was revived by a guy named Gareth Roberts recently. He finished it up, using Adams' original notes. You can tell Roberts was a genuine Adams and Doctor fan, as the story is very true to both of their styles. Very good read, and has the familiar Adams humor and Doctor quirkiness to it (even the book is quirky. It's printed upside-down). |

Some summer reading stuff: The Catcher in the Rye -- I know some people (which possibly includes MilkAndCookies) who love the book. I could see why they liked it from page one (narrator hates everything). I understand what the story was trying to do (I think... apparently they write entire books on the book...), and it did it well, but I didn't care for it quite as much as those other people. Aaand three short stories: "Luck" -- Umm. TL;DR -- There's this guy in military school who is, quite frankly, stupid, but he always gets lucky and beats everyone in everything, including combat. However, all of that was a flashback. There wasn't much of a plot at all AFAIK other than a list of his lucky events. "A & P" -- Short version (of the already-short story): Hot girls walk into a store so the cashier stares at them until they make their way to checkout, where they go to his register. He checks them out (looking at them *and* his job). The manager comes over and says they're not wearing appropriate clothing. The cashier quits his job to stand up for them, but they leave before he's done talking to his former boss, so he ends up with no job and no love. I didn't really like this one at all because ~90% was "oh look, those girls, I hope they'll come to my register". "The Passing of Grandison" -- This one was very good, in my opinion. Well, the setup was stupid, but the end is good, again in my opinion. The setup is about this guy who wants to marry a girl, but she doesn't think he works hard enough. So he wants to prove that he can work hard by convincing one of his father's slaves to run away to Canada. Spoilers ahead...
The man sets up his attempt to make the slave flee to Canada by asking his father if he can go north because he is not feeling well and needs a change of scenery. He requests to take a slave with him, and asks for the one that he knows wants to escape. Instead, he gets the most loyal slave. However, as they go north, the man tries to put the slave in areas where abolitionists will try to persuade him to escape. He escapes at the last minute, but then comes back to the plantation, brutally beaten. The owner talks about how he's such a loyal slave and all, but then it turns out he was only doing that to get the rest of his family to escape with him. I thought that story was a lot better. It helped that it had a plot and stuff.
|

I finished A Game of Thrones last night, and I'm going to start A Clash of Kings tonight. I'm definitely addicted to this series, although I'm quite sad that I won't be able to see the second season until who knows when. If HBO does with this show what they do with True Blood, they won't release the second season on DVD/Blu-Ray until right before the third season starts. Which is a bummer because I've heard the third season isn't starting until April :\ I really did like the book though, although even at the end I was still trying to remember who some of the characters were. Watching the show definitely helps with that, though. |

Been reading more TWD... I've read up through issue 84 (volume 14) now. And these last two arcs... They've been great. The prison/Governor stuff is still my favorite single conflict at the moment, but something about these last couple of arcs stood out to me. I don't know. I won't spoil anything of course, but I guess it was just that I really didn't expect some of the things that happened here. I just love how anything can happen at any time in TWD without it seeming unrealistic (aside from the whole zombie apocalypse thing) because no one is really safe all the time... Anyway I know who cares about TWD here so when you get to that part we can talk about it then. :P |

Picked up Neil Gaiman's American Gods last week while on my trip. I was hoping to get it signed by Neil Gaiman, but that was not to be on this trip. Perhaps next time. Anyway, it's been a while since I've read such a good book. The prose is fairly breezy and informal. It makes for a very fast read, and it also feels like the conversations are natural, filled with lines that real people would say. Seems like a whole lot of running and hiding happens until about 400 pages in, but Shadow was a compelling enough main character to keep me interested. That and the writing. Things finally start happening at the end, and, well... It's a brilliant ending IMO. Never saw it coming. I'll probably be placing an order for Neverwhere this weekend or sometime. Found a local place where I can order pretty much any book my little heart desires, and they'll give me a used book for free to "tide me over". |
