DAT STORY TIEM So as most breeders are aware, having someone in the front of your party with Flame Body will halve the number of steps required to hatch eggs. Back in the very early stages I had Gil send me over a Larvesta who served that purpose, but without Fly he didn't have the utility that good ol' Talonflame has (I could have evolved him but that's a lot of effort). However, I never really got around to catching and raising a Fletchling of my own. Enter Wonder Trade. Around the time I started breeding and was looking to get a Talonflame of my own, I was doing some Wonder Trades and got "Kawaiifix" the Fletchinder. Well, since Fletchinder has Flame Body, he isn't functionally any different from Talonflame, and so he became my "Talonflame" to speed up egg hatching and Fly me around. But the thing about his utility is that as a dedicated Flyer/breeder he spends a lot of time in your party and you take him everywhere, even during non-breeding adventures like chaining, Friend Safaris, Chateau, Serena battles, etc. So Kawaiifix eventually became the classic Talonflame and grew and grew and grew until one day I was grabbing Lucky Eggs from Chanseys and he hit level 100. But of course, having spent so much time with Kawaiifix in the party I was aware that he was leveling up and.. I dunno, I liked it. I liked having him grow and level up (because it's Pokemon) and now that he was level 100 that would be the end of it. But releasing him would get rid of the beloved Talonflame utility so I couldn't let him go. I did a few more Wonder Trades and I tend to release commons like Bunnelby, Flabebe, Panpour, etc. But for some reason I'd kept one Fletchling called Fletch - I couldn't bring myself to release that Fletchling because it was nicknamed, I guess. So I went into a LeWow and brought along Fletch, who got a ton of levels and hit around 40 to be a Talonflame himself. And now I could use him as my utility and Kawaiifix would be confined to the box. Which would be stupid because I would never use him. So I decided to send him off into Wonder Trade. I got an Aipom. I don't use that Aipom. But I've decided to keep doing that - when my current Talonflame hits 100 it'll get sent over Wonder Trade and I'll use a new Fletchling with a different name. About 10-15 minutes ago I sent Fletch, who hit level 100, over trade and got Spoiler and I'm on to Tech now.I dunno why I wrote this. |

at first i thought that was a bad shoop then realized it was the world collectively shaking its head at Ninty But yeah, I finally got around to not being totally lazy and made the team I wanted to use as my tryhard in-game team on Pokemon Showdown. I had Mega Mawile, Chandelure, Breloom, Dragonite, Swampert, and Galvantula, but wound up changing that. Galvantula didn't really fit what I was going for. SURE, its Sticky Web would have helped, but I find that with this team I have better things to do than set up Sticky Web. Swampert had its moments, but I ultimately wanted another special sweeper. So I've wound up with this. Idk why I was so intimidated to play on Showdown. I'm not the best or anything, but it's a fun time. da teem

Sure, I'll post my team, too. Posted Image Gourgeist-Super @ Leftovers Ability: Frisk EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SDef Impish Nature - Leech Seed - Will-O-Wisp - Seed Bomb - Phantom Force Man I love Gourgeist. She can be kinda hit-or-miss on Showdown but she pulls her weight on cartridge and does some pretty nice things herself. Leech Seed and WoW just passively whittle things down as she stays fresh and beefy. Seed Bomb for offensive pressure and, while moves like Fly and Dig are frowned upon, Phantom Force hits hard, gives me an extra turn of recovery/burn damage, and catches Protect-ers off-guard when they realize it goes through. She hates statuses but loves people who don't switch. Posted Image Tyranitar @ Leftovers Ability: Sand Stream EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SDef Adamant Nature - Stealth Rock - Pursuit - Earthquake - Stone Edge Ttar is probably one of the best compliments to Gourgeist you can get, specifically because the two cover each other so well - Ttar takes Fire, Ice, and Flying moves *COUGH SMOGONBIRD* as well as Ghosts and Darks, Gourgeist takes Water, Grass, and Fighting. Sand Stream can be a nuisance for the rest of the team but the guy is strong as hell to the point where it's worth it - plus it makes him better on the special side to compliment Gourgeist's physical. EdgeQuake for spectacular coverage, Pursuit-traps pesky Psychics, and he lays rocks when he's not smashing holes in things. Hot damn. Posted Image Medicham-Mega @ Medichamite Ability: Pure Power EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd Jolly Nature - High Jump Kick - Ice Punch - Psycho Cut - Fire Punch Medicham was my bro back in Gen 3 when he tore through the Dark/Ice members of the E4 and I've had a soft spot for him ever since. With a mega evolution packing a stupidly high attack stat, something higher than his laughable base 80 speed, and the ability to OHKO or 2HKO basically everything he sees, you're only taking him out with priority, a HJK miss, or... something higher than base 100 speed. Hm. Nonetheless he's got stupidly nice coverage and frankly doesn't care about his opponent's typing because he'll break anything in half. Hi Jump Kick misses are unfortunate but if you can't capitalize on his miss, be prepared for round 2. Posted Image Rotom-Heat @ Leftovers Ability: Levitate EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 SDef Calm Nature - Will-O-Wisp - Volt Switch - Overheat - Pain Split Oh yeah, Medicham hates statuses, too. As does everybody. So we introduce Rotom-H. His typing blocks WoW and Thunder Wave, his Overheat almost literally melts stuff, and with a good bit of prediction he can block a status and Volt Switch out when they switch to a counter. I might make him EV'ed on the physical side depending on what he ends up checking but Rotom's a great anti-meta poke and if he does his job right, you won't be able to tell he did anything at all. Posted Image Starmie @ Leftovers Ability: Natural Cure - Ice Beam - Rapid Spin - Thunderbolt - Surf Last member of the FWG defensive core. Well, Starmie doesn't particularly perform well defensively, but people have used it since gen 1 for the same reasons: great moves, great power, great speed. Not to mention Rapid Spin is a godsend for Rotom-H, and Natural Cure lets it take a status and shrug it off. Posted Image Garchomp @ Lum Berry Ability: Rough Skin EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd Jolly Nature - Earthquake - Outrage - Stone Edge - Fire Fang Because he's fucking Garchomp. |

I'm not really a huge fan at all of Starmie this gen. It just doesn't do what it needs to do and has nothing to stop important stuff setting up. On the subject of Dragonite, leading with Weakness Policy/Dragon Dance-nite is just insane. If they can't get rid of you, you get free Dragon Dance. You're guaranteed not to be Stealth Rocked or something, so they have to hit you with something super effective, which procs Weakness Policy. The only thing that really stops it is Toxic lead but that isn't too common. I'm not sure if I just love setup, but I was really surprised that none of your psuedos had Dragon Dance, Swords Dance or Focus Energy. I woulda thought it would be kinda mandatory on all of them as they don't pack the tankiness (besides T-Tar and maybe D-Nite) to take a hit back most of the time. I also just dislike Hydreigon in general, I feel it's Latios but infinitely weaker while also packing a 4x Weakness to Fairy. Might as well do my team while we're at it. Helmasaur (Venusaur) @ Venusaurite Ability: Overgrow EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 SDef Calm Nature IVs: 30 Atk / 30 Def - Giga Drain - Leech Seed - Synthesis - Sleep Powder This is currently the best Mega in the entire game that's legal in OU and God damn is it countered hard by other Grass types. I considered packing Sludge Bomb, but the most common Grass types are itself and Ferrothorn so there's no real point. It's unfairly bulky and Thick Fat means it takes very little damage from Fire/Ice, so you get free switches on scary things like Manaphy. Leech Seed swap into Gliscor is ludicrous and it along with Synthesis is required on a tanky Mega with no Leftovers. Sleep Powder is pretty self-explanatory. Vovalgia (Heatran) (F) @ Leftovers Ability: Flash Fire EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 SDef Calm Nature - Stealth Rock - Lava Plume - Roar - Will-O-Wisp I tend to run this and MEGA VENUSAUR in every team I play as a core as they cover an obscene amount of types together. What kills Vena? Smogonbird, Heatran checks it. What kills Heatran? Lucario, Venusaur checks it. Granted, these two are counted super hard by Mega Medicham or tanky Espeon. Heatran set is something I go really back and forth on but I like Roar a lot because otherwise it can't do a huge pile to stuff setting up Calm Minds on it. Lava Plume is solid damage but I might replace it for Fire Blast as I already have Will-O-Wisp if I want to burn and quite often it's detrimental to burn someone I want to Toxic with Gliscor. Valoo (Kyurem-Black) @ Leftovers Ability: Teravolt EVs: 252 HP / 178 Atk / 80 Def Lonely Nature - Dragon Claw - Fusion Bolt - Roost - Ice Beam Why Game Freak decided to make a physical behemoth and give it zero physical Ice moves I may never know, but I do know that this thing is fully capable of sweeping teams anyway due to its gigantic tankiness and disgusting base 170 Atk. Ice Beam is mainly for coverage and the fact it already has a strong base 120 SpAtk. Roost access is even better. Kyurem-B is fully capable of walling out against a lot of things and it's similarly capable of one shotting nearly every set up sweeper in the game. I also think it looks absolutely amazing; it smashes the ground and roars often and it just makes it feel more "legendary". Mothra (Gliscor) @ Toxic Orb Ability: Poison Heal EVs: 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 Spd Impish Nature - Earthquake - Substitute - Protect - Toxic Well this is my favourite Pokemon to use competitively. It can swap in on so much due to status immunity (or just swap into things using Toxic for the first time) and it breaks walls like crazy. If it gets a Toxic off on something then outspeeds it, Gliscor will wall it until it dies guaranteed. Even if it's slower, if it survives a turn (which it will) to get a spare Substitute off, you're in the same position. This thing is absolutely crazy. Ruto (Manaphy) @ Life Orb Ability: Hydration EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd Timid Nature - Tail Glow - Surf - Ice Beam - Energy Ball Welp Manaphy is broken and adorable and I love it. This think 2HKO's Blissey at double Tail Glow while Blissey is sat there looking at it funny. One Tail Glow is generally enough to 6-0 teams, people just forefeit at two. Grass Knot is great for stuff like Gyarados, but Rotom-Wash is the most common thing in the world and an Energy Ball off Tail Glow will kill OHKO it along with outspeeding it. Manaphy is the most dangerous Pokemon in the game to give a free turn to and I do believe that its existance in the game makes stuff like Forretress bad. Agahnim (Reuniclus) @ Leftovers Ability: Magic Guard EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SAtk Bold Nature - Calm Mind - Focus Blast - Psyshock - Recover Rounding out my quadruple walls is Reuniclus, another favourite. It has pretty huge physical bulk, so you can swap it in on a lot of things. Recover access gives it a 56% heal every turn, so if you can't 2HKO this thing, you lose. It can nearly infinitely Calm Mind due to huge bulk in both Defences it's going to get so the enemy has to rely on crits or Focus Miss doing work. This and Gliscor cover a lot of things the other doesn't, but in general you just want to swap in Vena or something on anything that'll start killing Reuniclus like Greninja (pre-Calm Minds). The team tends to fall apart if I misplay early and lose one of my four walls. Manaphy and Kyurem-B are mainly there so if I get a free turn to switch, I can bring them out later on and clean house as they tend to be hard to swap in. It's very easy to accidentally have Gliscor eat a stray Ice Beam or have Venusaur walk into a Psyshock, but if I play correctly and keep everything alive, I can generally wall out everything that's threatening to me before swapping in my own threats and winning the game. |

Ttar has pretty bad 4MSS as it is (On the cartridge I run Taunt instead of EQ because Taunt is just so damn good) so I've never been big on DDTar. Maybe if I got rid of rocks for it, but Stealth Rock is just one of the best "low risk-high reward" things in the game. On Dragonite I run DD, yeah - just prefer Garchomp because if Dragonite doesn't get the DD off for some reason he's sitting at, like, base 85 speed I think? Terrible. DD/Extremespeed/Outrage/Fire Punch, only really walled by Heatran (but who isn't). Surprised to learn Garchomp can't get DD, but that'd be broke as shit. I could slash Stone Edge or Fire Fang on him for Swords Dance but base 102 speed is still pretty exploitable. |

Dragonite has that whole 4MSS thing going for it, too. Sure, DD is a great move. I'd love to have it. But what goes? Dragon Claw is there for obvious reasons. EQ is a generic powerful move, but it needs some kind of secondary attack. Extremespeed is Extremespeed. Roost is the only move I could cut for DD, but I like what Roost does for me and procing Weakness Policy is usually all Dragonite needs to wreck teams. I still find Starmie's power a bit lacking. If it can't OHKO things, which it often can't, it'll often find itself getting OHKO'd in return. Its Rapid Spin is useful, but I'm not sure it's bringing much else to the table at this point. And yeah, Hydreigon has two 4x weaks. I feel I might be a bit weak to Bug. It's not the most ubiquitous type, but U-Turn is on a lot of things, and Bug Buzz/Megahorn/X-Scissor are moves to be aware of. I like its power, but its ability to take a hit leaves something to be desired. EDIT: I could double post, but meh. Not really important. After playing some more today, I think I've finally settled on my last two Pokemon. Melody Dean (Espeon) (F) @ Life Orb Ability: Magic Bounce EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP Modest Nature - Psyshock - Dazzling Gleam - Shadow Ball - Wish Psyshock is mostly for the incredibly unfun duo of Skarmbliss, but I guess there are other Pokes to use this on. Dazzling Gleam and Shadow Ball are coverage, and I guess Wish is there just because. Idk, I don't feel like I have much occasion to use it. I could be talked into trying Calm Mind over it, but Espeon seems too frail to set up. The EVs are generic sweeper stuff for a team full of heavy hitters. This is definitely a much better fit on the team than anything else I have tried, and I like Espeon, so yeah. >.> Bottomfeeder (Tentacruel) @ Leftovers Ability: Liquid Ooze EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP Timid Nature - Scald - Ice Beam - Toxic Spikes - Rapid Spin So my team's been all bout dat offensive life. Well, I decided to try this thing out and it's gone swimmingly. EQ weaks aren't as bad as I'd have thought; most users of the move are very predictable. I lead with this thing instead of Mawile most of the time now. It's often able to get at least a layer of Toxic Spikes up, which helps immensely. It's also packing Rapid Spin, which is kind of useful. I suppose I could make this bulkier, but the special attack investment means I OHKO most Gliscors, which is nice with the annoying Sub/Protect/Toxic/EQ set, and the speed is always handy for getting Toxic Spikes up and such. It's far and away the weakest Poke on this team, but it does what I expect of it. Edited by Romanticide, Jan 26 2014, 08:54 AM.

http://www.destructoid.com/pok-mon-x-y-beta-competition-set-for-next-month-269714.phtml I doubt I'd be able to make it into this because I'm not that great, but damned if I'm not going to at least try. I expect Mega Kangas, Gengars, and all the usual cheese, though. |
