Sorry, I meant transform. Also, we really don't need spoilers. If you're reading a thread on an upcoming game, expect to hear about newly released news. |

Heads up, everyone who got X and/or Y. A game-breaking bug has been found. Reportedly, there's a small chance of your save file being irreversibly corrupted if you save in Lumiose City. If your file does get corrupt, there have been reports of people getting their file back by shutting down the 3DS, taking out the SD card, and starting the game up without the SD card. Worth trying if it does happen. |

I'm loving the game a lot but anyone else disappointed with the amount of new pokemon and mega evolutions? I understand that there was a lot of work to be done but would thirty more pokemon and a couple more evolutions been that much more work. My only complaint about the game. Pm a side note who picked what starter? I got x and y although I haven't started x yet. Picked Chespin and Charmander. Going topick either Froakie and Squirtle or fennekin and Squirtle. And if anybody didn't know you can buy the starter mega stones at the stone emporium. At first there a million dollars but the price drops as you become more stylish. Not really a spoiler since the guy is selling them extremely early in the game |

#FennekinSwag Also picked Squirtle. As far as the number of Pokemon go, it's always about quality. For the most part, the designs are legit, and there are some typings we haven't seen very much or any of. I would be happier with the ~70 Pokemon if we didn't have series staples: the early Normal/Flying, the early Bug, etc. These things already exist en masse and idk what these new ones would do to differentiate themselves. It would actually be a fair amount of work to add more Pokemon. There are just so many animations for so many things (Pokemon Amie, moves in battle, etc), and someone has to make each and every one of them for every Pokemon. That said, I understand the gripe; even 90-100 would make this a much more fleshed out generation IMO. MEGA POKEMON... Now that I've played the game, they seem somewhat less absurd, but idk what effect they'll have on the competitive scene. If they merely make otherwise lesser-used Pokemon usable, they're a great idea. If they overly centralize the metagame, not so much. I feel like they could have easily been left out, but whatever. As for the game, it's pretty coo'. The big gripe that people will have is it's even easier than usual, which I feel is mostly attributable to the new Exp Share and how early it's obtained. Sure, you can turn it off, which would definitely result in lower levels, but I doubt this game would be much harder since at worst you'd probably be on even footing with everyone. Whatever, not like I play for difficulty. I do feel the new Exp Share could have been saved for the post-game, since grinding post-game on level 65 Pokes or whatever sucks donkey nuts. I like the affection system. It's not too tedious unless you're looking to get all your Pokemon from no affection to max affection right away. I wish it had more of an in-game effect besides boosted experience and some random battle effects, though, but idk what that would entail. I just hope that it isn't a factor competitively; those not fainting/shrugging off status ailments things would turn online play into a gigantic luckfest. While luck sometimes happens and affects matches (crits, burns, etc), I feel like Pokemon not fainting/automatically curing ailments takes that a bit far. There are so many little improvements in this game. Switching held items is painless, you can register up to four items, the world feels bigger and thus you feel more immersed in it, the camera angles are pretty good, etc. tl;dr: Game kicks ass. If you like Pokemon and have a 3DS, you need X or Y. I just hope the post-game is good enough to keep me entertained. |

What? You can choose both one of the gen 6 pokemon AND 1st gen? I need this game! Also, the final evolutions of the gen 6 starters look legit as phuk. Time to borrow a 3DS/buy a 2DS and Pokemon X/Y! |

WARNING: This will be a long post. I was really nervous for this game coming out. It looked rushed, I wasn't a fan of the art style they'd gone for and overall it made me very scared after Black/White 2 were bad. After playing through the main story, I think that while the game is definitely fantastic, it still has some glaring issues that need addressed. Just gonna give long thoughts on everything I think of the game; gameplay changes, the main quest and Mega Pokemon. Gameplay Changes First thing that hit me as I started the game was the amount of incredible Quality of Life changes. Running shoes are enabled from the very start, you can move diagonally, catching Pokemon gives you EXP, you can see your party in the Bag Menu to heal - I could go on, but essentially every single little thing that could be improved has been improved. The obligatory "HOW TO CATCH A POGEYMAN" tutorial is still unskippable, but oh well. It's a really nice gesture that they improved so many things. There's also been a significant power decrease across the board for everything. All the generic 95 Power moves like Thunderbolt and Ice Beam got reduced to 90 while moves like Fire Blast and Overheat were all reduced by 10 to 110 and 140 respectively. I think competitively this is a much needed nerfs to sweepers like Hydreigon and Latios. Earthquake somehow survived this, but oh well. A big change is that ALL weather sources now last 5 turns max. This includes things like Drizzle and Drought so weather teams are pretty much dead. They dominated the meta, so that's good. The new Pokemon, for the most part, are really good! I'm not a huge fan of things like Klefki and Honedge, but things are really good in general. My biggest issue is that there's only like 70 new Pokemon and they're all introduced towards the start. Honestly, this screams that they made the starting Pokemon and didn't have time to make more for other things. I shouldn't be walking into a new desert route and finding no new Pokemon or, even worse, being surprised to find new Pokemon. Apart from the diagonal running and other great additions, I think the overworld took a hit. The overworld gets in the way of things and the camera shifts are downright annoying. These are forgivable for the speed you can get round the place, but it's something that is notable. The Main Quest I'm sure most of us are pretty happy with how awesome everything was with the whole "just finished a game" hype but let's look back at the main game for a second. It really is just not very good. There are three really crippling issues which stop this game from being a joyous romp through Kalos. 1. Terrible pacing From the first badge to the second badge takes around two to three hours of gameplay and then you pick up the fourth to sixth in less than fourty minutes. What's up with that? The game paces itself really poorly in that it introduces the main evil team quite a few hours into the game and then throws them at you uncharacteristically every single route between towns. Speaking of which, the routes are very short, so the pacing issue becomes even more apparent when you're just waltzing through gyms with little to no introduction.
I know we don't play Pokemon for the story, but honestly, that's a trend that can easily be stopped. Black and White showed us the games can be mature and have very strong storylines while fourth gen showed us that they can have a storyline that is easy to follow without being too in your face about it. This game gave us Team Flare, a comedy relief gang that becomes incredibly serious out of nowhere and seems to lack reasonably motivation for a lot of things. The main villain can be seen a mile off and the inevitable trek to save the world after the seventh badge feels lackluster throughout due to this. Sure, the legendary sequence and backstory is great, but at no point do you really feel under threat from these idiots. Which brings me to my next point...
3. Horrific overlevelling By a few hours in, you outlevel everything in the entire game by five or ten levels including gyms. I wish I was joking. Even the CHAMPION was below me by three or four levels. This is due to the new EXP Share giving experience to everything, but surely that should have come up in playtesting? I was having issues keeping my underlevelled Pokemon up with my Fennekin as the game started and the game gives you an EXP Share less than an hour in. As any player would, you use it and end up insanely overlevelled. This should REALLY come up in testing as it makes you one shot everything in the game with no issue for over half of it. Despite these three things, the game does play very well. Everything is very slick and it's still somehow fun to play through despite one shotting everything in the game. I mean, it's Pokemon and it's very SOLID Pokemon, at that. The rival system in the game is great - four of your friends go out to journey with you, each with their own motivations - along with the writing for the most part. It is a solid romp, but it does feel like the game is ever so slightly rushed as I said before. The midgame feels lazy while the beginning and ending are both very well polished and made. Mega Pokemon The biggest point is, of course, the Mega Pokemon. I actually like them! I think they feel epic to use, they look utterly amazing (for the most part, Gardevoir and Manectric) and they add a really nice layer to battling. They're so God Damned scary, to be honest, and I really like them! I'm actually going to go through my thoughts on each and every one of them using Serebii's list found here. Mega Venusaur Design wise it looks identical, not a fan. Has nice tanky stats with good offensive ones too. Thick Fat gives it great resistances that it needs with its tanky stuff. Mega Charizard X Looks fucking awesome, is pretty bad in comparison. Fire/Dragon is an awesome typing, granted, but its extra Special Attack is irrelevant with its ability. Its movepool also isn't varied enough to make use of it. Mega Charizard Y Move over, we've got a competitive mainstay! Drought with base 159 Special Attack is ridiculous. Just having this guy as a lead is going to be a fucking pain to deal with. He can swap in at any point, make it sunny and then nuke your tits off. Having to hold the Mega Stone sucks as you can't Scarf it, but I guess that kinda IS the point. Mega Blastoise PUT MORE CANNONS ON IT. Also looks a bit ridiculous, but whatever. Has pretty well rounded stats but a lack of Speed hurts the Sweeper ability it gets. I like to think of it as a Special Attacking Gyarados. I can't think of abusable moves with its ability offhand, but I'm sure it gets lots. Mega Alakazam Not too fussed on design, looks pretty cool, I guess. Turns Alakazam into even more of a one trick pony but it's still going to be absolute monster unless you have answer to it. Talk about cleaning up late game. Mega Gengar The most consistently strong lead in the game just got even stronger. Shadow Tag means you're not getting shit set up and then switching, you're getting shit set up and then dying. Ridiculous clean up potential throughout the game like Alakazam; is basically a worse version with a way better movepool. I like its look a lot despite what lots of people are saying. Mega Kangaskhan Absolutely love the concept. It still has an issue of being Jack of all Trades, Master of Jack Shit, but it can still pump out some quite serious damage. I think other things still do its job better as a bulky Physical Pokemon. A more damagey Snorlax, I think? Mega Pinsir Looks the best of the lot! I think it looks beyond fucking awesome but it's actually pretty bad. 105 Base Speed is nice and yeah it can sweep really hard but anything with a Choice Scarf will outspeed and still one shot it with its lackluster HP. Mega Gyarados Move over, metagame. The best bulky answer to things just became an even better answer. If this fucker gets a Dragon Dance or two off, there's not going to BE a late game. Fantastic stats all around besides Speed but, as I mentioned, it gets Dragon Dance anyway so it's not a huge issue. Ridiculous sweeping potential with great bulky stats. It looks pretty odd; its animation concerns me more than its appearance, though - it "swims" as one big thing rather than segmented like normal Gyarados, if that makes sense? Mega Aerodactyl THROW SPIKES AT A POKEMON AND MAKE IT MEGA. It's a shame they put so much effort into its useless defensive stats considering its appalling typing. Its Speed is still ludicrous but I feel more damage would have made it more efficient. Mega Mewtwo X I think this one LOOKS better than Y but ultimately isn't as strong. I don't think Mewtwo has as strong a physical movepool and they are basically just massive sweepers for their respective Attack stats. Mega Mewtwo Y I actually think it looks great despite the genwunner's hate. It is beyond batshit but ironically, like a lot of Megas, loses out on damage due to lack of Life Orb. It more than makes up for it with getting bulk everywhere else besides physically and even more insane base Speed. We've got here a tank that one shots universes. That's pretty ridiculous. Mega Ampharos It actually got slower, hilariously. It has some really, really nice Special Attack but I believe it remains unremarkable due to lack of variation in what it does. Looks hilarious but still kinda cool. Mega Scizor Looks fucking awesome but I think it'd look better with actual feet. I assume it kinda floats off the ground or something? Anyway, slap Bullet Punch on it and it becomes a sweeping machine, especially with a Swords Dance. Not too huge an improvement besides the fact that it's not dying to Earthquakes any time soon. Might be weaker due to limited itemisation. Mega Heracross Odd design but I'll roll with it. Absolutely immense Physical Attack and sadly no real way to use it. Everything outspeeds it and it has an abysmal typing. Mega Houndoom Looks great. Terrible sweeper before, forgettable sweeper after. Mega Tyranitar NONONO THIS DOES NOT NEED TO EXIST. Looks utterly amazing but no tank should be given base 164 Attack. This as a lead for Sand Teams will be able to actually destroy most other leads if you don't have a Fighting type move to deal with it; pretty sure 150 Defence laughs at non-STAB Earthquakes. Mega Blaziken Absolutely love the design. Was banned with Speed Boost in Gen 5, will be banned even harder here. Mega Gardevoir Tragically looks terrible but fortunately it's still pretty decent. Will still die to a paper cut and unfortunately still too slow to do much with Calm Minds but it has absolutely fantastic typing. Switch this in on a Latios and it'll struggle for options besides giving you a free Calm Mind. Another Mega that if all its answers are dead will just roflstomp teams. Mega Mawile I really, really wanted this to be good. Don't get me wrong, it's still usable - it has an absolutely fantastic typing but 50 base HP? Really? It can still pump out good damage but eh... not sure. It depends how much of an impact Fairies have on the metagame to see whether it's useful. Uninspiring design of a slightly bigger headpiece. Mega Aggron I think this is criminally overlooked at the minute. While it looks pretty ridiculous, it gets rid of Aggron's original weakness of being a Physical Wall with 4x weakness to Fighting and Ground. Not only has its typing been drastically improved, its also gained a very powerful ability which gives it the opportunity to set up Stealth Rock as well as Automise itself for, if you would believe it, an Aggron sweep. Pretty big contender. Mega Medicham Meh design, meh stats, mehhhh. Mega Manectric Honestly looks like somebody drew too far in photoshop or something. What even IS that? It looks like it's in pain. Despite that, it's actually usable. If it could use Specs it'd be amazing but, again, that IS the point. It gets fairly decent coverage and it's a pretty neat substitute to Jolteon in Rain teams but I'm not sure whether Specs Jolteon or this does more damage offhand. Mega Banette I don't understand this. They're giving it Prankster then making it a Physical Sweeper with no Speed? Not a huge fan on how it looks as it kinda does away with the whole "discarded doll" thing. Mega Absol Looks absolutely stunningly beautiful. It's a shame they put a lot of its stats into Special Attack which it'll never use. Has an absolutely ludicrous movepool so it'll definitely see play just because of how much stuff it can cover. Fairly generic physical sweeper. Mega Garchomp When I saw it I nearly creamed myself thinking the game had been completely broken but it's hilariously worse than it was before. They nerfed its Speed and you obviously can't Scarf it so like it's doing ANYTHING before melting due to its absymal typing. It did get pretty bulky but I think the lack of Speed just makes it so it will get max one attack off before crumpling. Mega Lucario It reminds me of a traveling warrior which I like a lot. Fairly generic sweeper in BOTH stats which is really cool. Mega Abomasnow Bulky with an abysmal typing so what's the point? Looks almost the same too. Bleh. That is the "super long Pokemon post" for this year. Tune back next year when Pokemon Z comes out and completely obliterates a perfectly balanced metagame! |
