I figured I'd go ahead and make this topic, since there seems to be enough interest in it here. I'll try to keep OP up-to-date with all new information. Posted Image QUICK LINKS: New Features, Version Differences, Gameplay Changes Characters Stages Items Trailers and Videos, Sources NEW FEATURES Some sort of character customization. VERSION DIFFERENCES The Wii U and 3DS versions of the game were shown to have distinct art styles from one another in that the 3DS version uses flatter shading and optional black outlines to make characters easier to see at a distance. Neither version will feature exclusive characters, but they will feature exclusive stages, with the Wii U version getting stages from console games and the 3DS version stages from handhelds. It is confirmed that there will be no cross-platform play between the two because of this. CHANGES Many characters have different movement and attack animations when facing either direction, so they face the screen more often. Depending on exact animation details, this may mean that some attacks may behave slightly differently when they interact with each other from different directions. Oddly, this only seems to appear in the Wii U version of the game; the 3DS version maintains the series standard. Damage percentage numbers are no longer a solid colour, instead appearing as a metallic gradient, and pass through green and yellow colours instead of fading straight from white to red as damage increases. Attacks' visual effects are in general more pronounced, with bright saturated blurs replacing the previous game's subtle ones. The design of KOs in this game closely resembles Brawl's KO design, but the soundbyte for it sounds much more like an actual explosion compared with the previous three games. The smoke trail effect produced by characters taking high knockback seems to have been replaced by a coloured trail of light representing which player will get the KO should the target not recover. In an interview with Kotaku, Sakurai confirmed that tripping would not return. However, it is unclear whether this refers to random tripping, forced tripping, or both. To appeal to both casual and hardcore gamers, Sakurai said the game's speed will be between that of Melee and Brawl. In support of this, in the gameplay footage shown so far, characters seem to be falling faster than they do in Brawl. In a demo match between Mario and Mega Man, there appears to be no stale-move negation. It is unknown whether it has been explicitly removed, yet to be programmed, or temporarily disabled for the demo. Though Sakurai had once stated there would be a single player story mode, he later went on to say he had changed his mind. There now will no longer be a story mode, nor cut scenes involving the games available single player mode. He did not provide any other details as to what the single-player mode will consist of. |

STAGES Stages are the main defining difference between the 3DS and the Wii U versions of SSB4. The Wii U version will focus on stages from games that appeared on consoles, and the 3DS version will focus on stages from games that appeared on handhelds. Currently there are 9 confirmed stages for the 3DS version and 11 for the Wii U version. BOTH VERSIONS: Battlefield (Super Smash Bros.) The recurring stage that has appeared in every Super Smash Bros. game. Like Brawl's version, the stage will have a day-night cycle. The Wii U and 3DS versions will have different designs for the stage, but the same layout. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Picture 4 - 3DS: Arena Ferox (Fire Emblem: Awakening) A stage based off the arena from Fire Emblem: Awakening. It appears to have no special features. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Gerudo Valley (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D) A stage where players fight on the bridge over the river in Gerudo Valley. It appears to have no special features. The Gerudo Valley Theme can be heard during the Developer's Direct. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Rainbow Road (Mario Kart 7) A cruise-type stage. Rainbow Road will take the combatants all around Rainbow Road, stopping frequently at key spots on the track. Racers are presumably going to be hazards. Spirit Train (The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks) Players ride on the Spirit Train as it travels through New Hyrule. Similar to Big Blue from Melee, if you fall off the train it is likely you will be KO'd. The Overworld Theme can be heard during the Developer's Direct. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Find Mii Stage It's a stage based on the Find Mii minigame on StreetPass for the 3DS. It features the Dark Emperor. - Picture 1 - Kid Icarus: Uprising Stage A stage with a backdrop that shows a cloudy sky with falling rain. A vast lake shown between two canyons in the background, with a castle in the foreground. The stage is from Chapter 11 in Kid Icarus: Uprising, where humans are fighting over the publicized fake Wish Seed and get a Reset Bomb dropped on them. The stage appears to be dynamic, with the Reset Bomb detonating and reforming the stage into an otherworldly appearance. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Nintendogs Stage A stage set in a room from the Nintendogs universe. Players play on toy blocks, with Nintendogs visible in the background. It is speculated that the Nintendogs might be a stage hazard. - Picture 1 - Super Mario 3D Land Stage A stage based off of World 1-1 from Super Mario 3D Land. It also includes sections with floating platforms suspended over water and rotating blocks. The stage is a scrolling stage, much like Mushroomy Kingdom from Brawl. The Main Theme can be heard during the Developer's Direct. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Picture 4 - Unidentified Stage Little is known about this stage other than two screenshots. It is speculated that these might be based on a Donkey Kong game. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Wii U: Dr. Wily's Castle (Mega Man 2) A stage with Dr. Wily's Castle set in the background. There appears to be moving platforms, similar to those from the Mega Man series. The Yellow Devil appears on the stage, although it is unknown if he is a stage hazard, an assist trophy, or some sort of boss. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Garden of Hope (Pikmin 3) A stage based on the second area in Pikmin 3, the Garden of Hope. It appears to be a grounded stage with an uneven landscape. A platform with edges that can be grabbed, named the 'tin lift', hangs from above. It is based on the same kind of platform that can be found in the Garden of Hope in Pikmin 3. These platforms descend when supporting too much weight, but it is unknown if this happens in Super Smash Bros. The S.S. Drake sits in the background. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Mario Galaxy (Super Mario Galaxy) A stage that takes place on one of the planets in Super Mario Galaxy. It is confirmed that the stage's gravity will eminate from the center of the planet, so fighters must use different strategies to KO opponents. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Pyrosphere (Metroid: Other M) A stage based on the Pyrosphere from Metroid: Other M, specifically where Samus encounters Ridley. It features four platforms in a parallelogram shape. Sakurai teased the stage with the comment "An enemy from Samus's past may appear at any second…", possibly hinting that Ridley will make an appearance as a stage hazard. - Picture 1 - Skyloft (The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword) A stage on and around Skyloft from the The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Like Brawl's Delfino Plaza stage, Skyloft is a touring stage, that flies combatants to various parts of Skyloft using a set of moving platforms. Characters can fight in front of the bazaar, the Statue of the Goddess, the windmill topped by a bird's nest, the top of the Light Tower, among other locations. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Picture 4 - Picture 5 - Windy Hill Zone (Sonic Lost World) A stage based off of Windy Hill Zone, the first level in Sonic Lost World. The stage may utilize the game's Super Mario Galaxy-esque gravity, with the stage's center of gravity being the center of the stage. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Wuhu Island (Pilotwings) A stage based on the Pilotwings series. Combatants fight atop the wings of a biplane, based on the biplane of the original Pilotwings game, as it flies through the sky. Over the process of the battle, combatants will move from the biplane onto a yellow plane, based on its design in Pilotwings Resort. The plane flies towards Wuhu Island, the main location in Pilotwings Resort, as well as games such as Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Picture 4 - Picture 5 - Animal Crossing Stage A stage with elements based on the Animal Crossing series. There appear to be two variations of the stage, one set in the village and the other in the city. It's unclear if these are two separate stages or variants of the same. It is unknown at this time if the stage utilizes the same real-time day-night system that Brawl's Smashville had. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Wii Fit Stage A stage that appears to be the room where Wii Fit Trainer does practices in the game Wii Fit. The stage features a large mirror in the background, as well as a living Wii Balance Board character, and a treadmill. Three floating Wii Balance Boards are the stage's aerial platforms. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - Picture 3 - Unknown Stadium A generic indoor stadium with a jumbotron. It is currently unclear if it is based on a specific game or if it is original to Super Smash Bros. 4. It is also unknown if it will be exclusive to Wii U, however no screenshots have been posted showing it in the 3DS version. It is speculated that this might be a Punch-Out!! stage. - Picture 1 - |

ITEMS RETURNING ITEMS: Capsule (Super Smash Bros.) Can drop an item when broken, but sometimes explodes. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - [rainbow][NEW][/rainbow]Poké Ball (Pokémon) When thrown, a random Pokémon is summoned, and is friendly to only the player who threw the ball. Ray Gun (Super Smash Bros.) A Ray Gun can be shot sixteen times before it runs out of ammo. Each shot does minor damage, and has high knockback. It has a medium rate of fire. - Picture 1 - Smash Ball (Super Smash Bros.) While no pictures have been shown, Sakurai has confirmed their return. The Smash Ball flies around the stage at random. Whoever breaks it has the ability to unleash their final smash. NEW ITEMS: [rainbow][NEW][/rainbow]Beetle (Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword) The Beetle item from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is a comical item that grabs characters and carries them into the air. - Picture 1 - Hocotate Ship (Pikmin) When the item is picked up the ship will take off and then drop down without notice back to the stage, exploding wherever it hits. The item is based on Olimar's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros Brawl. - Picture 1 - Steel Diver (Steel Diver) The sub from Steel Diver is now a projectile weapon. It launches torpedoes that fly slowly at first. - Picture 1 - Wii Fit Soccer Ball (Wii Fit) It will presumably behave similar to the soccer ball in Brawl. When struck, it will fly across the screen, damaging anyone who is struck by it. - Picture 1 - Picture 2 - X Bomb (Kid Icarus: Uprising) From the latest Kid Icarus game, this bomb creates an explosion shaped like an X. - Picture 1 - ASSIST TROPHIES: [rainbow][NEW][/rainbow]Ashley (WarioWare) Her function as an assist trophy is not known yet. - Picture 1 - Skull Kid (Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask) No official word is given yet, but it's probably a safe bet that he'll make the moon crash into the stage or something like that. - Picture 1 - [rainbow][NEW][/rainbow]Mother Brain (Metroid) Massive assist trophy that is presumably stationary. Attacks with giant laser beam. - Picture 1 - Nintendog (Nintendogs) Runs up to the screen and blocks the player's view for a short time. Starfy (The Legendary Starfy) Spins around, attacking other combatants. Attacks are very weak. POKÉMON: [rainbow][NEW][/rainbow]Palkia (Gen 4, #484) - Picture 1 - Xerneas (Gen 6, #716) - Picture 1 - |

About the unknown Stadium stage, IIRC, there's speculation that it's a Punch-Out!! stage (possibly hinting at Little Mac being a character). |

I wouldn't. I absolutely despise playing Fox and Link, love Falco and Toon Link. As it is, TL's playstyle is completely different - floaty, good air game - to Link's more ground based, powerful playstyle. Fox and Falco, admittedly, are quite similar, but I for one would hate to see characters like these or Ganon reworked and be left with their less fun, boring counterparts. EDIT: Little Mac seems more than likely. I can see a lot of the new characters being Assist Trophies finally making their way in as there aren't really a pile of new series to pick from. |

[spoiler=New stage announced]Posted Image Posted Image[/spoiler] A stage that takes place on one of the planets in Super Mario Galaxy. It is confirmed that the stage's gravity will eminate from the center of the planet, so fighters must use different strategies to KO opponents. The stage's gravity will be an interesting feature. I wonder how much that's gonna affect gameplay. |

Ray Gun's new design revealed Sakurai said that the Smash Bros. emblem will act like a stamp. Not entirely sure what he means by that, but my thoughts is that whatever you shoot with the ray gun, the emblem will be left on it. Interesting concept, if that's what it is. As for the design, Sakurai said that they carefully designed the Ray Gun so that it doesn't resemble a real gun. Good thing, too, because it now looks awesome. Definitely the best design it's ever had. |
