I'm not really sure what the situation is. He got banned for attacking a player... in Smash Bros? wat? Please tell me it means attacking over some kind of chat or something.
he attacked a player, who then counter attacked him, so he attacked back, and was kicked from the lobby. you're apparently not allowed to hit the same player two consecutive times in For Fun mode

So if you're comboing someone and try to take them out quickly because you're on a big map and the other players are fighting each other, suddenly you're only left with two players? Sounds legit.

Hopefully this was some weird bug.

But if the online is as good as it was in Brawl, I wont be playing that any way =/

I'm not THAT good at the game so I avoid online like the plague. It's simply not fun getting your ass kicked constantly.

Been playing it quite a bit. Mainly I've played as link, pikachu, and shulk, but I've messed around with most of the people I have unlocked so far. Really enjoying it

This is actually completely untrue. If you target specifically only one player and actively avoid other players for entire games, it bans you. It says this when you sign up and everybody who got banned for it is just like "LOL I GOT BANNED FOR NO REASON" when you have to really be going out of your way for this to happen. I mean, I still think it's really dumb but people seriously overreacted to this.

On the subject of the game, how is everyone finding the Wii U version? I could do a big comprehensive look at everythin' but basically Fox is the best and Final Destination sucks, Battlefield is the new FD no items leggo. I'd really like to have an SPV3 fun night because I'm pretty sure only Andami will 1v1 me in the true spirit of this party game (on that note, let's play son) so yeah everyone get the game and play pls.

I sadly wont be playing this until January, Jonty. I'm going home on Tuesday and I can't be bothered to bring the Wii U with me.

But I'm so down for a fun night with you guys once I actually get it. I haven't played Smash in ages, so I'll likely be terribad. =[

I'm pretty sure I haven't even played 666 games total between all the games and all the characters.

So I probably can't help.

I have this for 3DS now just in case that wasn't known. I'm as noobish as it can possibly get but I could use some people to play with so I can learn.

Probably basic tips but stuff that's going to make you a better player in the long run:

Learn the basic techniques the characters are capable of. This includes:
~Standard jab / jab combo - pressing A, A, A without directional input
~Tilts (up, side, down). Hold the control stick in a direction and press A. An easy example to see it in action is Mario - his up tilt will be an uppercut, side tilt is a roundhouse kick, down tilt is a sweeping kick. Tilts tend to be a character's bread and butter because they're fast but still have knockback.
~Smash attacks (up, side, down). Almost literally smash your control stick in a direction and hold A. Your character should be flashing - this means they're charging up for a smash attack, which tends to be the best KO potential you can get. They make you vulnerable, though - particularly because you lock yourself into one move (meaning your opponent can figure out where they can hit you safely) and many characters have animations during/after smashes that leave them vulnerable.
~Neutral aerial (Nair), Up-aerial (Uair), Forward-aerial (Fair), Back-aerial (Bair), Down-aerial (Dair) attacks. Hold a direction + press A.
~Neutral B, Side-B, Up-B, Down-B
~Grab. Left trigger when facing someone grabs them, and then you can either pummel (press Grab again while holding them) a bit or throw them up/down/forward/backward by pressing the control stick.
~Shield. Hold right trigger to bring up a shield that blocks attacks. As it takes damage, or as you hold it, it depletes in power (and regenerates when not in use) - if it breaks you'll be stunned for a long time and someone's guaranteed to run over and hit you during it. Some really strong moves (particularly from someone like Ganondorf / Bowser) can break a shield even when it's fresh. You can grab an enemy who's shielding.
~Roll/dodge. R + move forward or backward to do an invincible roll for a short distance. It's probably the best learning tool for getting out of the way of attacks, or dodging projectiles headed your way. You can also do R + down to "spot dodge" (is that terminology common?) to "roll" in place.
~Airdodge. Press R in the air to be temporarily invincible. Good if someone's trying to attack you as you land to the ground, or if they try to shoot something at you during recovery.

Learn the characters. Learn their special moves, how fast they are, and any special nuances. Mega Man's side Smash attack is a projectile. Palutena's up Smash is a giant pillar laser. Kirby has more than one jump he can use in midair. You can attack Pacman's hydrant to hit him with it. Some characters can crawl by crouching and moving in a direction. But knowing what they're capable of is going to let you predict or react to their moves. The better you know a character, the better you know their most vulnerable moments. If Captain Falcon uses Falcon Kick in midair and misses, he's vulnerable while recovering from slamming his foot into the ground. Villager will be helpless after falling off of its side-B gyroid. Jigglypuff gives you a long time to hit her if she misses up-B or uses down-B. Characters like Marth or Little Mac, if they rely on their counter moves very often, are susceptible to grabs. You get the picture - it's obvious that learning the characters is useful, but in particular get a feel for how everyone plays.

A subset of that, learn how your character recovers. The biggest way people limit how much they die is using up-B recovery moves to get back on the stage. Once the instinct of "I need to get back on the stage from the side/bottom, I'll use up-B" is ingrained, you'll have way more opportunities to swing the fight.

Vary your attacks. Crappy players find a move on a character that they feel is strong and keep using it. Not only does the game punish this (by decreasing the power of moves you're using repeatedly), it makes you way too predictable. I won a dinky little Brawl tournament in high school because the final guy used Kirby and would always jump above me and use the stone move, because it makes Kirby invincible, or the up-B to try and get me with the blade. And every time he did it, I'd just shield the attack and hit him when he was getting out of the stone form, or shield the blade from up-B and rush him during the animation of him finishing the attack. People will spam Greninja's down-aerial because it shoots him straight down and bounces him back up to let him do it again. So you can either shield it or just roll when he's about to hit the ground, then hit him. Pikachu's down-B Thunder is a strong move but leaves Pikachu super vulnerable, so that's also a punishable move. But if you mix up your attacks it's hard for your opponent to get a read on what you're doing. Jab, tilt, use specials, grab them, follow up with aerial attacks. A character with one move is eventually going to get figured out.

Realistically the best advice I can give is "play more". You get a feel for the game soon enough. Have fun with it, do 4-person smashes with items and whatnot, or do 1v1s against computers to try and study characters in better depth. Do the various modes. Ask one of us to play, it's a fun game and I'm always up for it. Find characters you like and git gud.
