Civilization Weekend!; Not actually a weekend, but I like "Weekend" at the end of it.

Thanks for the quick tips! Is Civ V at all similar to games like Age of Empires II? I'd imagine some core aspects are similar enough, but Civ seems much more slow paced.

I'm starting to get a bit pumped to give it a go.

My first post ITT has some really good stuff, but to get anything out of it you need a basic understanding of the game. As it is, I'd just recommend playing a few games and finding out what shit does. I wouldn't worry much about winning at this point, though if you play on Settler/Chieftain/maybe Warlord for your first few games you probably will anyway, even if it's after 500 turns.

I suppose this is the point where I add my own thoughts.

Do not underestimate scouting. In almost every game (unless I know I'm on an island), I open up by building two Scouts and sending them in opposite directions to find me more ruins/city-states/civs/natural wonders. You also need to scout to find the best city locations, but for now I'd just found new cities relatively close to the capital (6-10 tiles away), and where the game tells you to found them.

The earlier you can expand, the better, but for now, just figure out what shit does. At the lower levels, there won't be a huge rush for land. At Prince+, being able to grab land somewhat fast becomes more important.

Pottery is generally the best tech to research first. The Shrine will generally get you a Pantheon, which you can use to get more faith and get a Religion. The Granary gives you +2 Food and +1 for each Wheat, Bananas, and Deer resource.

Food leads to Growth and Growth leads to Science. In that sense, Food is King, but if you're going to settle in an area that would give you a lot of food but little to no Production/Gold, you're going to have a hard time. Food might be King, but you also need Production to build shit and Gold to upgrade units/buy important stuff.

Use everything you have. You only need one copy of a Luxury to get the +4 Happiness from it, so you want to trade all excess copies for other luxuries or 7 gold per turn. Luxuries are preferable to the GPT in almost all cases, but the GPT is still better than nothing. If you know you're going to play peacefully, selling things like Iron is better than letting it sit and do nothing for you. I like to sell 1 copy of Iron for 2 GPT because it gives you more money, but it's slightly more tedious.

"Gold is undeniably useful but if you don't have something to spend it on it's a waste of time to focus on it. The hierarchy of a city's priority list is Food > Production > Gold - it's certainly something you don't want to pass up but one thing it can't buy is turns and it can't save an empire."

Gold gets more useful as you move up in difficulty. At the lower levels, AIs just won't have that much gold to spare for your luxuries, unused strategic resources, etc. At the higher levels, AIs will be flush with gold and it's up to you to sap them of at least some of it by selling them shit. I also like selling off most of my GPT for a lump sum around the time I research a new Science building. This allows me to buy that building and shave off turns. But yeah, this is an Immortal+ tactic.

This said, Gold is still the least useful of the three, but it's still very useful.

Oli never mentioned Faith. At the lower levels, building a Shrine in every city will probably be sufficient to get you a Religion. SURE, it'll be pretty slow, but it's doable. What you want to do is get a Pantheon that generates you more Faith. Desert Folklore is by far the best, but it does you no good without any desert.

What a Religion does for you is allows you to tailor your civ still further. There are beliefs that allow you to get more GPT, special buildings you can't get any other way that increase Culture/Faith/Happiness, allow you to spread your religion easier, and so on. For right now I'd probably just play around with religion. Take beliefs and see what they do for you.

On the whole, I'd say Faith is less important than even Culture. In most cases, a Religion won't win a game for you because there's nothing gamebreaking on offer, but it'll help somewhat. Even certain Social Policies/Ideological tenets are more useful than most religious beliefs.

I'd be down. I want to get in some races on the new MK8 tracks, but it's not like racing has to take hours.

Do you still have only vanilla? I don't mind playing that, but I am curious.

Playing Civ together with you guys? That sounds awesome.

Also, I might post some thoughts today. I've been meaning to...but y'know, Civ.

Seriously, I've racked up 40 hours since Friday. >_>

Yes, I am slightly addicted.

I think I'd be able to play on Sunday as well. I have a meeting at 8 PM my time with my clan (we have these every few months about various stuff), so I'd be down for something before/after that time.

I'm good for Sunday. Civ is slow enough that I can still pay some attention to football.

I'm pretty sure Paal has the complete edition (all civs, G&K/BNW), so failure, what DLC/expansions do you have?

I picked up the Ultimate edition, so I'd imagine it's the complete version.

Also I should add you on Steam, failure. I have everyone else who has expressed interest in playing Civ, but not you. Is your Steam name still the same as the one posted in the online names thread?
