It's the same name. You can find him on my friends list or just search it I guess. His icon is the album art to that one Boston album. |

Thanks. I didn't think he had changed that name, but you never know. I believe Lightning and kramer have changed their Steam accounts, so yeah, might as well just ask. |

Yeah, I believe so. Oli has prior commitments so he won't be playing, and Paal is available after 9 PM his time (1 PM PST/3 PM CST), but as far as I know, the rest of us can still play. Edited by Romanticide, Nov 15 2014, 08:37 PM.

WHY THE EARLY GAME MATTERS I figured I would do a guide after hearing about how ghost was struggling in his game with failure and Oli. Score doesn't mean jack shit, but it's a passable indicator of which empires are thriving and which ones are not. The earlier in the game you are, the better it is. Once you get into the Industrial/Modern eras, its use starts falling off IMO because civs are either setting up for their victory (on Deity/maybe Immortal) or doing nothing to prepare for it (Emperor/lower). Anyway, there are two major tenets that I would say are extremely important to Civ. 1) Growth is King. More people = more tiles to work = more yields = more everything. Also, more people = more science. 2) Civ is a gigantic snowball. What you do in the earliest turns sets the foundation for everything that comes later. If you do great early, you're in position to do great later. If you do badly early, you'll probably still be doing badly later unless you're playing some strat that gains steam later (sup @ most wide strats). This guide will take you through the early game and it'll go pretty in-depth as to my thought processes. I will use as many tricks as I possibly can to help myself (and by extension, you) get an early leg up on the opposition. Our goals: -Scout, scout, scout. Double scout opening. -Get Tradition ASAP. Pray to RNGesus for a Culture ruin. (most OP ruin early) -Build a Shrine and grab a choice pantheon. Desert Folklore is the one we want, but if we can't get/use it, we want a +Faith pantheon. If not that, we'll probably settle for God-King or some shit. -Found 3-4 cities, preferably coastal (Cargo Ships OP) by turn 50 at the latest. I tend to settle 3; I can grow them a bit more and that helps alleviate happiness issues somewhat. Also, there might not be a good 4th spot, but 3 usable spots are almost guaranteed even on Deity. -Start growing those fuckers to the sky. -Steal at least two Workers from city-states. -Send 1 or 2 food trade routes to the capital. -Build Granaries and Libraries in all of our cities. -Found a religion. -Build the National College. If possible: -Build the Temple of Artemis (+10% growth in all cities) -Build Petra (+1 Gold/Production/Food for each desert tile) -Build the Hanging Gardens (+6 Food/free Garden) It's probably not going to be possible to get more than one of these. I MIGHT get two if I build them in separate cities, but odds are I won't try to do so. If I can get even one of these, I've helped myself a fair bit. Two or three is like winning the lottery. We want all of this before or around turn 100. It's a lot to get done, but it's doable. I might do this for Liberty at some point, but it'll require me to work on my strats. I guess "getting better" isn't a bad impetus to do so. A Liberty/Honor Domination game is fairly easy to play. I stop self-founding at 3 cities, keep capitals, and burn all but the best cities, which is easy enough. A relatively peaceful Liberty is a different beast, one I haven't done much. I'd have to work on strats for this one, but I assume it would boil down to "mostly eliminate one or two neighboring civs, keep/found your own cities on their land". It would require a pretty good diplo game because the penalties for taking cities are substantial, even if the war is defensive. Anyway... Guide

You're a wonderful person. I am going to start up a game and try doing everything based on your guides, and I'll post some outcomes and keep it marked. Thank you thank you thank you sir. not just for writing the guide up, but you actually got into a game and, by the looks of the timestamp in the corner, played for 4 hours in order to properly write it all. that is way way more than I could have asked for. |

I enjoy playing Civ, so it's always fun to do something like this. You're playing as Venice, which means you get Merchants of Venice instead of Settlers. They also replace Great Merchants, so you should run Gold specialists. You get one for free once you research Optics, and you get one instead of a Settler when you take Liberty's Collective Rule. A Merchant of Venice allows you to puppet a city-state. Unlike normal puppets, you can buy buildings in your puppets. For this reason, a Great Merchant or two being generated by Venice isn't as bad a thing as it would be for other civs, though I'd probably still want to minimize that because Scientists and Engineers are still better. As far as city-states I would absorb into my empire: I would try to take one or two with good city locations. City-states generally don't have the best of locations, but there are usually a few that serve as decent cities because they still have access to good tiles. It's also preferable that they're close enough to you to send food routes to Venice. An important thing to know about puppets: They are set to Gold focus automatically and will not change it. This isn't bad for you; it fits what Venice does and it allows Venice to grow bigger. That said, improve the tiles surrounding the CS like you would one of your own cities. Venice's puppets will come with a Worker, which helps. What Venice does is it uses its double trade routes to rake in money. You still want some satellites so you can have them send food via Cargo Ships and make Venice grow nice and big. Assuming you don't get Petra/Colossus, I would want at least 10 external trade routes. In the mid/late-game, you should be able to buy most any building you want and focus almost exclusively on Wonders/soldiers if need be. I should have been more clear, but on non-Deity difficulties it takes city-states 35-40 turns to build Workers. I usually have Scouts out and about for 25-30 turns, then bring them to my targets for Worker stealing. I don't build Workers until later because I feel they're an inefficient use of hammers early when there is just so much important stuff to build. Even as Venice, who has almost nothing better to do than build an early Wonder, I feel like I'd want to take a shot at an early Wonder and steal a Worker for Venice. Temple of Artemis or Stonehenge would be nice IMO. I haven't played Venice in a fair while but I love them. Might have to play a Venice game sometime idk. I feel like this game is going alright so far. I'd probably get Optics relatively soon-ish (after you get your lux techs/Writing, maybe) and scout for a city-state you'll want as part of your empire. Get it a Cargo Ship ASAP and have it start sending Venice food. Venice can send it food too, which it might need because Gold focus. Mid-game post is pretty much typed up btdubs. I realize that there's something missing, and that's how I decide to build things, but that's hard to explain without breaking down how I value buildings/adapt based on circumstances. In this Morocco game, Happiness has been a big issue, whereas Gold and Culture have not been. So yeah, that'll be coming too. Edited by Romanticide, Dec 3 2014, 02:03 AM.

I restarted a new game. I didn't feel comfortable at all with playing a Civ like that while trying to learn the basic shit. I restarted and so far its been the same except I have gotten shit done faster. I am the Iroquois. Founded my first religion at turn 88. I had lots of gold plots around me so I chose my pantheon to be the one that gives faith and culture for all your gold plots. and I found Mt Fuji and settled next to it with my first city so that works. tons of food around that area too. My shit is thriving I would say EDIT Turn 101 the entire Tradition branch has been filled :P EDIT 2 image ONLY SLIGHTLY MORE FED Edited by tfghost92, Dec 3 2014, 04:25 AM.

Some people would recommend you keep playing the first 100 turns over and over again to see how things play out, depending on what you do. I'm not one of those people, but I'd admit there's validity to that approach. I don't blame you for starting over. Venice's mechanics are not friendly to those who want to learn/improve at the game's basics. I thought you were doing alright, but yeah. This new game sounds like it's going a lot better, and shit going like that is pretty rewarding. Sounds like you're having fun. |

at Turn 127 I recieved my second Great Prophet but I don't know whether to add beliefs or spread religion. Spreading my religion might be better but I feel like adding to my benefits would only...well, benefit me |

I feel if you have a Great Prophet, you should enhance your religion. You can either choose to buy a Missionary and spread your religion before you get your second set of beliefs, or you can wait for the second Great Prophet, enhance your religion, and THEN spread it to your cities/other civilizations. Either approach is valid. I don't know if one is better than the others, but I wait until my religion is fully enhanced to spread it. Idk I just like getting my favored beliefs first. City looks good though. Oracle build time doesn't appear bad, either. Nice recognition of when to attempt building it. You don't want to build that one when it'll take like 15+ turns; there are better things to do IMO. As the Iroquois, I would probably leave forested tiles that AREN'T along a river intact. Your Unique Building, the Longhouse, gives +1 Production to forested tiles and this still works with Lumbermills. Also, use Food/Production focus a bit more. Food focus is how my cities grow to the sky, and Production focus helps me build the Science buildings/vital Wonders that much quicker. |
