That's an awful lot of tiles not improved around Babylon. By that point in the game, nearly every tile within your capital's (and other cities') borders should be improved with SOMETHING. I tend to spam Farms in Tradition games because Food > all. Improving tiles in a timely fashion will really help your game. Also I'd have settled where the Worker is standing. You still get all those tiles on the north shore and gain some tiles to the south, like dat second Dyes(?). But yeah, lol dat screenshot. Finished a wide Shoshone game on Emperor. I ended with 12 cities, like 2k BPT, ~400 CPT, ~100 FPT, and... well, I was having Gold issues at the very end because Sweden and Babylon declared war and pwnt most of my trade routes. When all was going well, I was raking in ~350 GPT. Sure, you can get insane yields playing Tradition, but if you're good it'll turn into a lot of hitting Next Turn. Going wide is harder/less passive for the simple reason that the AI claims land pretty fast from King on up, and they don't have the Happiness issues you do as a human. This means you'll probably be going to war with at least one neighbor so you can claim some land from them. In this game, I took Madrid ~T150 and made it part of the glorious Shoshone empire. I also founded a city to the west that had a workable Sri Pada/a few jungle tiles (always Trading Post/Brazilwood Camp them!), which turned out to be one of my best cities. Wound up warring with Spain early, Japan later, and Sweden/Babylon at the end. I only took Madrid, but Sweden reduced them to one meh city (Cordoba, I think) in the south. I got real sick of Japan settling stupid cities near my lands, so I pwnt their shit. It took two wars, but I reduced Japan to one shitty city in the tundra, which I was content with. Never wipe out a civ if you can help it, unless it's an asshole like Attila or Shaka. Sweden and Babylon came to hate me in the late game and declared war on me, but I took three Swedish cities (including Stockholm) and razed one more. I would have freed the city-states Sweden took if the game didn't end before then because yay reduction in warmongerer penalties. Babs threw a few naval units at me and didn't accomplish anything. I thought we were bros Sweden. We had dat DoF/+10% to Great Person generation for hundreds of turns, but noooo, that ended because you took fucking Autocracy and I took Order. Going wide is a bit different than going Tradition, as you might expect. I think the biggest thing I'd want to improve on is taking a city or two early. ~T150 with Composite Bowmen/Catapults is... kinda late IMO. On a higher level than Emperor I don't think that would fly. Taking cities post-Industrial isn't exactly optimal unless going Domination (penalties, etc), but whatever; it's fucking fun. My social policies were all kinds of wut. I didn't know how I was going to win this game, so... Yeah. Wound up winning via Science as usual, but I feel like I could have chopped a lot of turns off if I took better policies/played better/etc. Patronage is really good in a wide game; you should be swimming in money if you don't build every little building in every city/send internal trade routes to your cities. You can and should use that money to ally important city-states. Commerce is incredible because Mercantilism/Protectionism are incredible. Rationalism is Rationalism, but I feel only Secularism/Free Thought matter. The +50% Science from Research Agreements will likely come too late to matter, unless you put off important Ideological tenets. Order is probably the best Ideology if not going Domination (lots of good Happiness tenets/stuff for new cities/Worker's Faculties), but I guess I could try Freedom. This was also probably my best religion game ever. 41/53 or so cities followed my religion by the end of the game. That was in large part because I couldn't spend my Faith on anything but spreading my religion (well... Great Merchants!!11), but whatever. Even without that I had two Faith NWs in my lands and they gave me tons of Faith, and so my religion easily dominated my continent. I feel playing wide in Civ V is punished in many ways (Happiness, Tradition being the best starting tree, other civs wanting your lands/thinking you have too many cities), but it's more doable than I thought and pretty fun. Think of it as an opportunity to become lifetime buddies by rescuing four of their units. Not that it'd make much of a difference because I cannot remember one instance where AI Japan was anything but the world's whipping boy. Fuck barbs tho. |

http://www.civilization.com/en/news/2015-05-civilization-beyond-earth-rising-tide-fall-2015/ YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH BOI Tbh this doesn't sound like much at the moment, but who knows? The first expansion of Civ V improved it, and the second made it an entirely different game. The most important takeaway here is that Firaxis is showing it's committed to this game and isn't moving all of its resources to Civ VI yet. I would have liked more factions. I'd also like alien factions. Alien barbs are going to remain a thing, which is understandable, but that doesn't mean they can't add civilizations from other planets who come to your planet because reasons. Last, these factions need to have some sort of personality/lore. I know what Shaka is going to be like because he was warlike in real life. I don't know what any of these leaders are going to be like because they're just made-up entities with little to no backstory. I love the idea of floating settlements. It's just inherently awesome. Maybe something that should have been in from the get-go, but it might have been difficult to add or simply not an idea they had. Diplomacy needs an overhaul and I hope these traits work to make it more interesting. Maybe they'll be like Civ IV's traits, which you could change at will, but in doing so you sent your empire into anarchy for 1-3 turns. Maybe they'll be something else. As long as they make diplomacy necessary, it should be a good thing. In the meantime, I'll wait for the "2.0" patch. If this is it, I guess I'm waiting for this? Idk. http://www.polygon.com/features/2015/7/22/8994323/civilization-turns-again-with-beyond-earth-rising-tide Sounds pretty cool. The ocean cities are obviously going to be the biggest draw, but vanilla BE needs/needed something to encourage diplomacy. As it was (and might still be?), you can quite easily get away with minimal diplomacy and that's just... blergh. It can turn into clicking "next turn" for 300+ turns, which can get stale. Idk when I'll get this, though. Probably around Christmas/January, too many other games. *shrug* It also sounds like the Civ Battle Royale is going to be back. I don't know when *exactly*, but the current plan is 60 civs (well, 59 because Babs will observe again) and a trimmed down, tested list of mods. It'll also probably be marathoned so as to cut down on number of reloads. I'm curious as to when it'll happen, but as long as it doesn't interfere with SGDQ, I'll be good with whenever. Apparently Sid Meier went to Michigan, and last night he was here giving a talk on game design. I went because Sid Meier, even though I don't have any strong interest in making games, but it was very interesting and I'll probably think about some of what he said when I'm playing games now. |

Posted Image decided to complete the Piety tree before Tradition. HOLY SHIT THESE BELIEFS YOU CAN SELECT. Evangelism, To The Glory of God, Underground Sect, Sacred Sites, and Religious Fervor are all INSANELY good ones to have. I opted to go with Evangelism after staring at this screen trying to decide for 10 minutes |

Don't sleep on Jesuit Education. A Public School/Research Lab in your capital/maybe another city the turn you research Scientific Theory/Plastics is not to be trifled with. It frees up your gold to put towards putting those buildings in other cities, or for other things if you feel you need them. You also have to do Sacred Sites cheese at least once in your time playing. It's best done with Byzantium because an extra belief is powerful, allowing you to take all three religious buildings when you found your religion (or as I'd do in normal games: two and Tithe), but there are probably others it can be done with. On the lower difficulties it's no question. But yeah, a fun strategy to try at least once. To the Glory of God is less powerful than you might think. I guess you could use it if you go not-Tradition/Order and want to win via Science (you'll need to buy engies *somehow*), but for the most part, you should be able to buy the Great People you need after going through the appropriate tree. Charitable Missions is probably good-ish if you want to win via Diplomacy, but that's basically the "screw the rules, I have money" victory. So meh. Heathen Conversion/Germany might be fun. Unity of the Prophets/Underground Sects are too gimmicky to recommend. Currently playing an anime civs game, it's decently fun. Playing as Akane Sakurada of Castle Town Dandelion. Starts out with Liberty unlocked (T0 +1 Culture is decently powerful, even if you intend to go Tradition - you get there faster, and Civ is a game of snowballs) and most of her bonuses are to Great People generation, which means it's a pretty flexible civ. I'm mostly just dicking around and trying to complete a game; I haven't done so in some time lol. |
