As requested by "Recent purchases"...

THE COMICS THREAD
now in full color

In today's news, Marvel announces Squirrel Girl's very own comic, coming January 2015 (source). This is something that I will be interested in, since I've heard good things about her, and she's just entering college too, and she's a squirrel and people in Michigan really like their squirrels apparently (there's a squirrel-feeding club and T-shirts that say "MICHIGAN SQUIRRELS").

As for stuff I've read recently... Brian K. Vaughan is da best. Finished Y: The Last Man earlier this year and it was great, Saga is obv great (and beautiful!), and the six issues of Runaways that I've read also seem cool. The only thing I've read in the past two months, though, is the first volume of the current run of Avengers, the one by Jonathan Hickman. I read the first half of it at the library when I got bored of doing whatever homework I was doing. The main villains seem kind of unoriginal, though... They're all about that "humans are evil so we're doing you a favor by killing them" thing. I haven't finished it but I'll see where it goes I guess. I'm more interested in the current New Avengers, which I started, but they don't have it at the library here. I haven't really had time to look at the not-superhero stuff they have here, but I'm sure I'll check that out sometime.

OKAY FINE I thought it made us look hip and relatable and approachable but dead bodies aren't hip/relatable/approachable so there I took it out.

I just finally started actually really getting into comics aside from the occasional read when I could get my hands on some. I've been try to find something relatively new that I could catch up on quickly. I bought a few collections with my school money at Barnes and Noble (cause I can use financial aid there). Dare Devil Mark Millar Vol 1, Captain America Masters, and Age of Ultron, I know those names are a little off.

I've also been reading some comics on Marvel Unlimited, which is great. So far I've been trying to read the 2008 run of Guardians of the Galaxy and the original Amazing Spider-Man. I also read thefirst new Ms. Marvel and really want to get to buy all of them, but my comic book shop only has the fifth one and up.

Any suggestions on something fairly easy to get caught up on would be great, so long as it isn't DCU, just because I don't have the time or money to get invested in two different expansive universe at one time, but anything Marvel or similar storyline would be fine.

I should read Y sometime, eventually, maybe. I still need to read all of Runaways. Vol. 1 has just been sitting in my room.

Also, Y'ALL NEED TO READ SAGA CUZ IT'S SOOOO GEWD! Fiona Staples is an amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing artist; she needs like infinite comics.

Well, if you're into Marvel, you can check out Runaways, which Snow and I mentioned. It's from Brian K. Vaughan (who is an awesome writer) and Adrian Alphona (who also did the art for the newest Ms. Marvel). A complete collection of the first volume (18 issues) just released not too long ago, so you can check that out if ya want.

Anyways, the last comic I read was Sex Criminals, Vol. 1, and yeah, it's pretty interesting. Was only the first five issues, so the volume was mainly just an introduction to the story, characters, etc. Long story short: a woman (Suzie) and a man (Jon) hook up and discover they both have the ability to freeze time when they orgasm. So naturally, they use this gift to rob a bank. It's a silly concept, and the comic is fucking hilarious. What I love the most are how open the two main characters are.

Throughout the comic, Suzie and Jon talk a lot about their past relationships and sexual encounters. How confusing it was for both of them to have this power, how confusing it was to learn about sex in general. They're so comfortable with each other, willing to share their similar experiences. It really, well, normalizes sex. Guess that's a bit odd to say, but sex is still treated like a taboo secret or an idealized goal. I think it's sad how embarrassed we are to talk about it, so it's refreshing to read something that isn't.

So yeah, if you're fascinated by human sexuality, then I definitely recommend Sex Criminals.

When I'm not behind, I'll probably post about SHIELD/Agent Carter/Arrow/Flash here too since I know at least LAD and Mac are into those and might as well post about them here. I've only seen through S2E1 of SHIELD right now but I'm hoping to maybe watch The Flash premiere tonight.

Oh yeah, Runaways isn't a current-running comic. Dunno if you thought it was. Finished its run in 2009 with three volumes, 62 issues altogether.

Also forgot to mention that Joss Whedon took over writing in the middle of volume 2 when Vaughan left, so geek out about that if ya want.

I knew it wasn't real recent, but no I didn't know it had ended, either way it'll be something to keep me entertained. 62 issues shouldn't be too hard to get sold of especially if they got collections. Just curious LAD, where do you get your comics from?

Edit: Turns out they're all on Marvel Unlimited so I'll definitely give them a read. Anybody else have marvel unlimited?

I've looked into Marvel Unlimited before, and I should probably get it, but I haven't =p. I don't always want to read superhero stuff, but I'd definitely read more if I had it. The only Marvel superhero stuff I'm interested in right now is Runaways, Astonishing X-Men (y'know, Whedon's one), 2008 GotG (because movie), Ms. Marvel, and idk some other group/ensemble stuff.

They're releasing complete collection volumes at the moment. Volume two (1-18 of the original vol. 2) comes out in December, and volume three (19-30) in March.

I torrent individual issues, and then buy the volumes, omnibuses, compendiums, whatever on Amazon when they come out.

I've been to the Atlantis Games & Comics in Portsmouth and Borderless Comics in Chesapeake, but never bought anything from them. Feels really intimidating going to a comic book store, really. Like I'm not knowledgeable enough of a comic fan to be in there.

It's definitely been worth it so far. I'd suggest it even if you just get it for a couple months.

I know how you feel about it being intimidating. Thankfully when I've been in the new Atlantis I haven't experienced that. It's a lot more open and I never have seen anyone in the comics section, they're always in the back, so it's not quite as bad. Like I like owning the collections, but some of them I'd prefer owning individual comics, especial the new ms. Marvel.

I like individual issues, but they get expensive and they're flimsy. But I like the covers! And not all collections include individual covers. It's a hard life.

Wewt comics. Wall incoming:

Currently I've been reading Grant Morrison's run on Batman and Geoff John's Green Lantern, both of which are awesome. Grant Morrison is probably my favorite comics writer just cause his stuff is both good and holyshitwhathappened. He did Animal Man in the 80's, revived the Justice League in the 90's, did Batman, where he introduced Damian Wayne, the best Robin, and right now is doing DC's Multiversity. He's great, but a lot of his stuff references some pretty obscure DC stuff. So get tha Wiki ready. As for Geoff Johns, I like him, he's done a lot of good stuff (in the New 52 he's done Aquaman, Shazam, Justice League, Green Lantern), but his Green Lantern stuff is awesome. I just wish it was less Hal Jordan. But oh well.

In current DC stuff, I've been reading Batman, Batman and Robin, the new Green Lantern crossover event thing whatever Godhead, Grayson, and Multiversity, all of which are great.

For Marvel, I've been reading Ms. Marvel (see LAD's comment), Thor: God of Thunder (and now just Thor), Miracleman (a fucking great series from the 80s/90s by Alan Moore and then Neil Gaiman that Marvel is just now reprinting), Death of Wolverine, and am going to keep up with the new Captain America series. I'm also gonna read Daredevil, Moon Knight, and She-Hulk when those trades come out.

In non Big-2: Vertigo: Got a bunch of their books off a Humble Bundle, and the two big standouts for me are Quantum & Woody and Archer & Armstrong. Both awesome, both funny. Image: I just started with The Wicked + The Divine, which is pretty good. I'll probably get Saga and Sex Criminals off Amazon soon cause their trades are like, 6 bucks, which is super cheap.

I should probably get Marvel Unlimited, but sometimes reading comics on my computer or phone is just so much of a hassle.

Also, yay Flash and Arrow.

[i'm so sorry for all the superhero stuff]

Pfft. If you know what you want, that's enough knowledge. I've only been to two comic stores, but neither of those stores gave me a pop quiz before I could shop. I did feel stupid once when I asked for an issue that was a month old and they were like "yeah idk if/when we'll get that again" because it sounded like I should've just known that they don't keep issues of things for more than a month. But that varies between the two stores I've been to... One usually has the last few issues of really big comics, the other pretty much just has the newest ones only. But those were both pretty small stores. There's one here in Ann Arbor that looks big from the pictures on their website, but I haven't been there yet.

EDIT: I tried to post this like an hour ago and it didn't work and I didn't feel like retyping it but apparently it's here now.
