History
SMALL BEGINNINGS: In the beginning of his life, all Sam knew was loneliness and despair. He grew up in an orphanage on Coruscant with practically nothing and no knowledge of where he came from or who his parents or family even were. This left him emotionally scarred for almost his entire childhood with no actual parental figures in his life to model himself after. To cover up this loneliness, Sam would often use sarcasm or a general cocky attitude to others around him. Finally towards the end of his teenage years he aged out of the orphanage and was sent to the street. This homelessness would eventually bring forth an offer of work and this work wasn't legal in the slightest. This negative influence would often lead to him getting in trouble with higher authority, which would later give him a criminal record. This record includes charges of the following: theft, illegal trading.
DISCOVERY: After finally getting another charge added to his record the Coruscant authorities decided to give him a choice, either enlist in the New Republic military or be thrown in a galactic prison. Deciding that he was clearly left with no actual choice he joined the military with a selection on which branch, he joined the pilot wing (airforce). Months passed by of extensive training and simulations, he was discovered to be an extraordinary pilot and quickly rose through the ranks. Many leaders in the military and even the senate said they wish "he had joined up with them sooner" and that the New Republic could use a man like him. Scoffing at these statements he decided to continue his service. Military commanders at the time who said he was the best natural pilot they had ever seen decided to make him a Lieutenant.
RESPONSIBILITY: At a time when the New Republic was trying to establish order in the Outer Rim. A large group of anti-New Republic extremists were practically holding Dantooine at it's knees. It is unconfirmed however most likely that these Anti-New Republic extremists were actually former Galactic Empire troops in disguise, to wage war against the New Republic. Sam and a large squadron of X-Wing fighters made a push for Dantooine in hopes of taking out the spacial defenses that the extremists had. The fighters made a break in the lines of the enemy, however took heavy losses from land based cannons and spacial turrets. As soon as the blunt of the enemy was destroyed or diverted, a small squadron of troop carriers (6) moved in to deploy on the surface. However after the enemy noticed this they sent a large portion of the fighters to attack these troop carriers. Sam saw the shift in enemy movement and rushed after this diversion of fighters, he destroyed several fighters as they headed to destroy the troop carriers. The Force was not with Sam on this day nor his astonishing luck, they lost 3 of the 6 drop ships and the rest that deployed on the surface were also killed. But as the New Republic fighters began to squish the enemy into practically nothing, a large group of New Republic cruisers hyper space jumped in and began to deploy more reinforcements and destroy the surface cannons as well as the turrets. The New Republic won the battle, but at a great cost and Dantooine now owed the Republic an unpayable debt.
After what came known as the 'Battle of 3' in remembrance of those troop carriers and the thousands that died, Sam began to blame himself for not catching up with that squadron of enemy fighters that destroyed them. He did however receive a commendation for the great victory over this massive force of enemies. This did not ease his conscience and took a leave of absence from the military for a small number of months. During these months he discovered that his luck was no actual luck but that he was actually force sensitive, but he did not approach the Jedi at all because he did not want to "become some enlightened puppet". But after these several months he returned to act of duty.
Upon returning to the spotlight in the military he noticed a difference in authority and it was an authority that backed down to the aggression of the First Order. Sam had urged these new military leaders to plan an attack or at least a viable defense against them should they ever launch an attack. They had planned a defense but at the moment no intention of attacking them. This angered Sam, knowing that the First Order were literally slaughtering children decided that he needed to take some responsibility to "make up" for his loss in the 'Battle of 3'. As an act of this responsibility he decided to once again leave the military and join up arms with the new founded Resistance.
