The work of the Starfleet Defense Force, established in 2385, has stabilized the United Federation of Planets. And despite continued threats from beyond it's borders, the Federation is resuming it's mission of peaceful exploration. The discovery of the Motares Wormhole has given the oppurtunity to do this in a way never dreamed possible before. The wormhole, first discovered in 2370, only remained open for a few short months. Then it remained closed, for a full five years. Initial probes brought back enough to gather some data. The wormhole extended to the Andromeda galaxy. Far beyond the range of any ships the Federation had. A total of five times, the wormhole opened, and each time, it had shown no signs of decay, or destabilization. Each time, unmanned probes were sent to collect more data, as the Federation began to plan, and prepare. The probes also located a stable, unihabited, save some local flora and fauna, class M planet, in a star system, dubbed Ventris, less than a light year away. So, by 2390, it was decided, when next it opened, a prefab starbase, and an Expeditionary Task Force, would be sent through. The operation taxed the already stretched budget of the Federation, and Starfleet, but it was managed. Twelve vessels were selected, most recently built, or refitted. A combination of experienced crew, and younger crew, were selected. The screening process was thurough. In addition, a pre- partially assembled Starbase was brought through, and rapidly assembled. Civilian contractors, as well as colonists, eager to be among the first from the Federation, to brave a new galaxy, were assembled. In all, nearly 75,000 people were brought together. Supplies enough to last some thirty years were prepared. Additional members of the task force included a large compliment of medical, engineering, and science staff, as well as a large compliment of Starfleet Marines. In mid-May, of 2395, the wormhole opened once more, and a prepared Starfleet began it's move.....
