I AM LEGION
|
While walking in the park the other day, my pet bird perched on my shoulder, I stumbled upon a man who walked with his chin up, and appeared to never bother to look down on someone. He had a similar bird, only in a cage, of the same species, and even of the same colors. Perhaps the only difference was that his was a male. "Hey, that's a nice bird you got there," he said. "Same to you too," I replied. "Handsome little fellow." What a coincidence, I thought. "Wanna race?" he asked. I was partly baffled at his rather sudden challenge, but out of nature I found myself agreeing. "Uh... okay. Where?" I asked in turn. My heart raced, not because of the likelihood of mine losing, but because of the many possible outcomes. My head was filled with questions like "What if...?" followed by "...but...?" With no time to spare, he placed the cage, with the bird in it, on a nearby bench. Even I could tell that it was tame, and loyal to its master, and thus failed to understand the reason he kept it in a cage. It flew around swift as a fly, yet larger than a fist, and appeared to be bred for racing. "From here, to over there, near that fountain," he said, followed by a motion to his bird as to where it needed to go. Not only was it fast and capable but it was also, as I said earlier, extremely loyal and obedient. It perched on the bench, ready to fly. I took mine off my shoulder. As I readied, I looked at the man and he nodded, signaling "go" as he picked up his bird and said "Fly like the wind!" And it just about did, literally. Not minding the head start, I took raised the finger my bird had perched on, and whispered in her ear, "Fly faster." |
