I think we should keep them they way they are right now. We can't claim the entirety of the islands just by threats and saying that "THE FILIPINO PEOPLE ARE AMONG THE BEST IN THE WORLD HAHAHA!" while China has a military base and troops on the main island. Vietnam and Malaysia should also be entitled to the territories. I don't know about China, though. It's their sea, but what the hell, they're the furthest away. Don't even get me started on the Republic of China.

I'm not sure about Malaysia's claim. I think they are mostly valid only because they own Sabah and Sarawak. China shouldn't even bother. It's within the sea SOUTH OF CHINA not IN SOUTHERN CHINA. The only ones with a very logical and sound claim are The Philippines and Vietnam. Even if you look at the map and locate Spratly Islands, you would think it's divided among Vietnam and the Philippines. You can also look at the scope of their claims to somehow gauge their beliefs that they truly, rightfully own the islands. Contrast the very small territory the Philippines claim and its reason why it believes that it owns a portion of the Spratlys- with China's claim- they say they own the entirety of the sea, including its islands, simply because their cartographers had them identified ages ago. |

If I got my borders right then they should be right off the coast of Malaysia. Sure the Philippines is the closest but it's not like everybody lives on the tip of Palawan. Vietnam should also be entitled a share. As for Brunei, I don't really see how they could get a part of the islands (which is why they don't). Now as for China, it's their sea, yes, but don't the Spratlys lie right in the middle of SE Asia? Pretty much 'Nam, Malaysia, and the Philippines are the ones whom I believe should be entitled a portion each of the Spratlys, if only considering proximity. If the UN were to intervene, then who knows, maybe some guys from a NATO country like Britain or the US, or maybe even Australia should just claim it. Or, they could just declare them as international territory (we do have that, don't we?), or terra nullius and... start the dispute all over again. Never mind, bad idea. |
