"I'm home~!" Calling out as I sidled into the tiny apartment, my arms ladened with groceries, I was quickly met with a small ball of energy throwing itself at my legs. "Did you get it? Did you buy it?" he asked, looking up at me with his big, bright eyes. This boy was Ryouta, my adorable, precious son. He was only five years old, but he had experienced far more things than most kids his age would have had to deal with. Which just made his smile all the more dazzling when you thought about it. "Of course! I got a bunch more stuff, too. Mamoru, can you go get the rest of the groceries, please?" Looking over to the living room as I dragged myself over to the kitchen table, I sighed in relief once I was able to put everything down. "Here, Ryou, help put things away, okay? Once it's all done, we can make some desserts for tomorrow," I smiled, untying some of the bags. That's right, tomorrow was our baby shower, and our way of initiating a few more members into our tiny family. It was Ryouta's idea, actually. When he found out he was going to be getting two baby brothers, his first request was for there to be a party to introduce them into the family. And, of course, how could we refuse such a suggestion? Obviously, however, it had to be a small party. Just something simple set in our apartment, with our closest friends and family invited. After all, the two boys we were going to be adopting still haven't moved in with us yet, and we wouldn't want to scare them with too many strangers. The door soon reopening, I quickly got up and helped hold it open as Mamoru, my fiance, lumbered in with the remaining groceries. His yawn as he walked past quickly affecting me, I quickly waved my hand and laughed it off. There was way too much stuff to do to be getting tired! "Mm...did you...get to see them today...?" Mamoru asked, as he set down the groceries and ruffled Ryouta's hair (who holding up a box of cake mix, declaring 'Cupcakes!' at him). "Mm-hm~ They're doing really well still. They said we can bring them home tomorrow morning, since everything checked out in time," I nodded. "They're so cute...I'm really excited... Takuma cried when I had to give him back to leave," I said, smiling fondly. It had only been last month that we'd been told of the two bundles, left together on the orphanage's step. They weren't biological brothers, so it was a wonder why they'd been left together...but I'd rather like to think it was destined. Especially as, only a week before, we had agreed to have the orphanage inform us of any new arrivals. After that, either me or Mamoru, or both of us, would go to the orphanage every day to visit the two babies, Izo and Takuma. We would have loved to have taken them home with us the day they had arrived, but sadly there was paperwork to deal with, and the younger boy, Takuma, had a fever when he was discovered, which required immediate care. But, now, the month was over, the paperwork was filed, and the children were healthy and bonding with us despite only seeing us a couple hours a day (when possible). I honestly could not wait. Granted, I wasn't too excited for the days of little to no sleep that I was constantly warned about...but I was already completely in love with our new sons. So even if it meant sleepless nights and high stress...it would be worth it. To raise a big, happy family with the person I loved with all my being...it was all worth it. Eventually finishing with putting away everything I had bought, the three of us gathered once more in the kitchen and while Mamoru got out the mixing bowls and utensils, I got out the ingredients. "Mm...you know...my mom is going to want to...give us a cake..." Mamoru warned, glancing from me to the ingredients I'd pulled out. Which was mostly ready-made cake mix. "I know. But Ryou wanted cupcakes and other things, too." "So...mostly dessert?" "Maaya's going to be bringing some actual food, too, don't worry," I laughed. "The only people who like my cooking are right here. So I figured if we were going to share, we should stick with desserts." "Ehh...mine's...not that bad," Mamoru frowned. "Well..." Trailing off, I bit my lip and turned my attention back to Ryouta, who was struggling with opening one of the boxes. Mamoru's cooking wasn't really that great, honestly, but more than that I was nervous about him burning the food again. Ryouta had been completely inconsolable for a good two days after that incident, and it had taken him another week before he was back to his cheery self. Mamoru had been absolutely devastated throughout that time, too, doing everything he could to try and make it up to our son. Though, bless Ryou's heart, he wasn't mad at all at Mamoru for it. But then again...I wondered if he just didn't realize what had happened exactly... Spending some time together just making the batter and pouring everything into the little cups to bake, I preset the oven and wiped my hands as I looked to Ryouta, who was happily sitting in his seat, licking the spoon and bowl clean. "Ne, Ryou, did you find the glitter and construction paper I bought?" I asked, getting an excited nod from the boy. "I put it there," he said, pointing with the spoon to the livingroom. "Is it for...um...de...decor...decordation?" he asked, stumbling over the word despite his best efforts. I smiled. "Yup! While I cook the cupcakes, you wanna go with Papa to the livingroom and make some streamers and stuff?" Easily getting an agreement to that, I nodded to Mamoru as well, who smiled and scooped Ryouta up to help him clean his face and hands of the cake batter. "Make sure to put down a bunch of newspaper, okay?" Calling over my shoulder as the two headed into the livingroom, I pointed to my paper on the table, which Ryouta quickly ran over to grab before taking it apart with Mamoru to cover the floor with it. Setting the cupcakes into the oven once it was done preheating, I sighed and sat down for now, watching my son and someday-hopefully-husband cut out and decorate strips of construction paper to link together into chains. As expected, Mamoru's were intricate and beautiful, and while Ryouta's were clumsy, they were heartfelt and filled with love. Which reminded me...tomorrow Ryou would be seeing his brothers in person for the first time, wasn't he? We had always asked if he wanted to visit them, but because they were at the same orphanage he had been at, he always said no. And because of what he had gone through, neither of us could blame him, and instead we always brought home pictures of the visit to show him. And he just ate those pictures up. The timer soon going off while Mamoru and Ryouta pieced together paper to write down 'Welcome, Izo and Takuma~!', I carefully pulled the trays of cupcakes from the oven and tested them. Determining that they were done, I set them well away from where Ryouta could reach to cool. "Hey, Ryou, what colour do you want the icing to be?" Peeking into the livingroom now, I smiled as Ryouta quickly looked over. "Green!" "Just green?" This causing him to pause, he thoughtfully tapped his finger to his chin. Then Mamoru spoke up. "How about...purple and yellow? Like their eyes." Ryouta quickly jumping to that idea, agreeing excitedly that it would work, I nodded and got to it. "Whenever you're done in there, wash up again and you can help decorate the cupcakes, okay? I'm gonna start on dinner now, too," I said, taking out the icing to let it soften along with things for dinner. The rest of the evening going by with quite light spirits, I cooked dinner while Mamoru and Ryouta decorated the cupcakes, drawing faces and giggling over funny shapes in the icing. Then while dinner was cooking on its own, I helped them string up their decorations around the apartment to prepare for tomorrow. Ryouta asking if there was going to be balloons, I nodded and promised that we would take care of them tomorrow, since, "Otherwise they'll shrink, ne? Remember how that one got all small after a while?" Which, of course he did. He had it saved on his shelf since it had been so interesting. Imagine! A balloon deflating even if there was no holes in it! Dinner soon finishing up, we gathered together to eat, the three of us happily tucking in as we continued to chat about plans for the following day. Since I had gone out all day today, tomorrow would be Mamoru's turn, to pick up a few more items and the two new additions to our home. Honestly, I wanted to be there with him for that, but someone had to stay home to finish up things here. So agreeing to stay with that assessment, we finished dinner, and while Mamoru cleaned up, I took Ryouta to the livingroom to read and help him with his writing. Then, after an hour or so of that, it was time for his bath and getting ready for bed. Which was a two-person job, honestly. It wasn't so much that Ryouta was a bad kid who didn't want baths, but more rather, someone had to distract him while the other treated his scars and bandaged them for him. But once he was in his pajamas, his hair dry and fluffy from being freshly clean, all sadness was lost and I just wanted to snuggle and cuddle him forever. Which was basically what we did every evening after baths: watched a quiet movie while cuddling until it was bedtime. And tonight was no exception. Despite the excitement for tomorrow and Ryouta declaring he was never ever going to sleep tonight, I soon found myself trapped between two sleeping cuties on the couch, while the credits to the movie played out. Very quietly waking up Mamoru, we shared a small kiss before I pointed his attention to Ryouta, who's head was using my lap as a pillow, his favourite stuffed puppy tucked under his arm. Without a word, already knowing the drill, Mamoru scooped the boy up and carried him into his bedroom while I shut down the house. Heading into my own room now, I paused and looked at the two cribs waiting patiently against the wall. Feeling a hand lightly touch my shoulder, I glanced over and smiled softly to Mamoru, who returned the look. "Nervous...?" he asked. Slowly, I nodded. It was going to be hard, I knew that. We had adopted Ryouta only a year ago, and raising a (then) quiet and well-behaved four-year old was miles from raising two infants at the same time. Especially one who might have health problems, and another who seemed temperamental in general... But we were determined. Even if other couples usually had a good nine months to prepare mentally for raising a child, we were...fairly certain that we were ready with only one. At least...I hoped. Being sat on the bed, I leaned into the kisses given to me, my skin flushing and heart skipping just like it did in our early high-school years when we had shared our first kiss. Breaking apart to breathe, Mamoru smiled and brushed my hair back. "It's gonna be okay, ne? You're a really...good mama," he whispered. I smiled, gently pulling him forwards as I laid back. "And you're a good papa," I chuckle, wrapping my arms around his neck as I pull him in more. As nervous as I am for the decision, for the huge step we're taking tomorrow...I'm not regretful for it. If I have Mamoru by my side throughout it, I'm more than certain I can manage anything. Especially a family... |
