Just making a new thread for organizing I guess.

http://doodle.com/poll/xwqys3rsid5cezsk

If everyone could fill this poll out so we can figure out challenge stuff and sit out, that would be great! The form is in Eastern Time (ET).

Also, I'm figuring out how to do a practice run of the game. Since it's run on Google Docs, I think we may need 4 documents, one for each player's hand. So You would get access to 3 documents and not the one for your own hand (since you only see OTHER player's hands). On top of that, probably one document to show our progress. So 5 in all.

Ekay so when we do the challenge, don't rush. I know speed is a factor in the tiebreaker, but speed leads to mistakes. Losing one point is worse than losing any amount of time.

I will be home in an hour maybe less.

Then we can talk strategy and maybe practice if you all are up for it! The boardgamearena link may help you since you can do a pick up game any time.

Alright im just settling down at home.

Hanabi can seem a bit difficult at first glance but its not too bad once youve done a round or 2 since you know what youre getting in to.

Does anyone have any questions about how things work? (i will write up a small tips guide shortly)

So, I've played with some SEEERIOUS Hanabi masters. I also read the really helpful BGG link that was posted here. My thoughts on tips/tricks:

- Keep a notebook/log of what clues have been given so you know what information each player knows (and what YOU know!) You don't want to give a redundant clue! Plus, let's say one player has a hand that's like green 2, blue 2, blue 5, and red 4. Someone else has already given them the clue about both blues in their hand... if you give a clue about 2s, they know EXACTLY what type of blue they have.

- Only give clues about cards that are either: safe to play (IE is next sequentially on the board), dangerous to play (IE ALERT DO NOT PLAY THIS 5 OR WE ARE CAPPED), or should be discarded (IE we already played the red 2 so you can safely discard your other red 2). Of these, giving clues about cards that SHOULD be played is more important because that's how we score.

- Don't over discard... every time you discard, you have to replace a card. The deck is very limited. It's good to discard for clue tokens but it's even better to give critical information! Try to ONLY discard if you're confident you have a useless card and we're low on clue tokens and you have no useful information to immediately give anybody else.

- When we have like two or fewer clue tokens, you should ask yourself if it's safe for the next person or the one after that to discard. If them discarding could screw us over (like if they have a 4 or 5 in hand), you may not want to give a clue on your turn

Really fantastic advice! Every point is solid, but i want to emphasize the notes. This isnt something we can normally do. Since we cannot communicate during the challenge, we have to keep our own notes.

ALWAYS keep track of what other people know about their hands. This is crucial and normally one of the hardest parts of Hanabi. Im going to have a notebook and pen while doing this. Taking our time and going over notes may be the difference between an 18 point game and a low 20s game. The higher the score the better!

Don't panic if we mess up. We don't have to win, we just have to get 2nd. There may be more room for error than you think, so if it looks like we mess up big, carry thr game out anyways and don't give up hope.

Screwing up in Hanabi is just a thing that happens, frankly. Even for people who have played many times. If it happens, that's absolutely okay, we just gotta stay focused and on track :)

So, I know we had the Doodle, but how much do people think they'll be available tonight? I'm mostly curious if we can do the practice, even if for just a couple rounds.

I will be around for a couple hours. I do have work in the morning so I don't want to be up tooooo terribly late but I'll make this challenge happen no matter what

Mags should be around in 10 minutes or so. So maybe in 20 minutes we can do a couple rounds of practice and discuss a bit, then actually start the challenge?

ALRIGHT!

So for the practice, I have multiple google documents. Please sign out of google to be sure we don't reveal anything! (I used a fake email, so I should be good).

I will also be playing, but i will be doling out cards too so I am technically spoiled as to who has what cards, but it shouldn't be a big deal since this is practice and learning!

Once we're all ready to go, I can send out the links to all other player's hands (except your own) and a document that keeps track of game progress.
