I'm not sure I fully understand what the stereotypes is, since I haven't played the game all that much, I don't know what the type is... |

Cole has the whole cocky and loud mouth personality, and constantly uses slang. Personally, I don't mind since his personality is what makes Cole interesting in the game. A cocky badass like him in a depressing war torn world is hilarious. btw Cloud, I thought you've played Gears of War a few times already? |

Not enough to know his personality...I didn't even remember there was a black guy in the game, it's been a long time since I looked at it. As far as the sterotype, I think black people have kind of brought it on themselves, or at least the ones in the media have. It's kind of the same way with Jeff Foxworthy and rednecks. |

In a way you're kind of right Cloud, in realty the reason we make people like that in video games is because thats how we display them on tv and in the media. We usually expect people to act a certain way because of how we see them on tv, still though many people are very different then the poeple we see on tv. |

That's true, I agree with that. However now that it's so set in, how do you change it? |

How to change it? Do something different. To add to what Kelsier is saying, everything you see on video games ,tv, ect. It all comes from real life, I know for a fact that majority of the black culture uses slang. So why not make the character the way he is? They're just calling it like they see it. It's truly sad but, true. |

That's pretty much it...though I do feel that the media is partly to blame in more ways then one. It's true that that is how a lot of blacks act, but then again not all of them do, and some more then others, I think it's driven more by your rap artists and the like then it is by the people themselvs. I know quite a few blacks that aren't that way. Just trying to give another view point for the discussions sake. |

I have to agree with Cloud on the fact that not all black people act that way, I've met some who do and some who don't. |

An Old Man
|
Fact: The way you behave is entirely alterable by you. To me, I see nothing wrong with portraying blacks in one of the most common ways they behave in society. Honestly speaking, blacks are seemingly encouraging the behavior amongst more blacks. It's annoying, but true. That said, the way to "change" it is simple. Ignore the stereotypical and make a character. Most folks in the world behave the way in which society expects them to, but when you see those that don't, you're often surprised or unsure how to react to them. Video games can do the same thing. No need to rely on stereotypes in order to make a convincing character. Example: Take a white man and a black and switch their environments. The white man will be loud and use slang while the black doesn't. However, based off of who both of them are they can choose to act completely different from where they are raised any how. People are unique, but most choose to just "fit in". I don't really see a problem with people calling it like they see it so long as it's a good character. Do stereotypes annoy me? Yes, but only because it's all been done before and is incredibly predictable. |
