I looked upon the scene before me - upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain - upon the bleak walls upon the vacant eye-like windows - upon a few rank sedges - and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees - with an utter depression of the soul, which I can compare to no earthly sensation… - Edgar Allan Poe * There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy - William Shakespeare * No Man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks. - Mary Wollstonecraft * Tell me the news, again, whatever it is... sorrow and I are hardly strangers. I can bear the worst. ― Sophocles

Ethics of the Path

Those vampires who follow the Path of Night wholly accept their damnation; indeed, they believe that, as vampires, it's their preordained role to act as agents of it. Unlife is nothing without pain, and misery enjoys company. Leave no being untouched by your taint. All beings must experience the touch of evil. The weak must be destroyed or corrupted. Those too strong or peripheral to be destroyed or corrupted must be scarred in passing. This is one of the most terrible Paths in existence, as it concerns itself with the outright and intentional discomfort of others. One who receives the curse of Caine is bound by fate and duty to wreak vengeance upon the Children of Seth (mortals). In so doing they hope that, by fulfilling the roles meant for them, they can transcend and find ultimate peace.

Tempt and horrify those around you; the weak will fall, while the strong will be tempered by your testing of them. Vampires, as creatures of life and death, have been sent as emissaries from the other side. It is their duty to break down the physical and spiritual resolve of all whom they come in contact. Nihilists are soldiers of darkness; just because a foe is respected doesn’t mean it can’t be destroyed. Inspire others to accept their inner darkness However, you must also recognize that some beings are fated to serve other powers than those of evil. If it is clear that a being is as spiritually pure (or simply different), as the vampire is corrupt, it is part of the natural order to allow that being to be what it is.

Experience every sensation imaginable, and then some. Just as a master craftsperson must be familiar with all his tool, so must a master of evil understand the medium in which he can work. Even “good” or “pure” sensations must be experienced. It is easier to work against a noble victim when one has knowledge of nobility, a pure victim when one understands purity, a loving victim when one understands love. No sin is too vile for a follower of this Path to indulge, and no trust is too sacred to break. Followers tie their fates very closely to mortals, who bear the brunt of their depredations. As harbingers of damnation, the Nihilists cull the secret fears and sorrows of humans around them, inflicting these terrors upon the kine as the whim takes them. Death is a means, not an end. Victims must be kept in a vampire’s sphere of influence as long as possible. A dead victim is beyond one’s reach. However, it is sometimes your duty to act as shepherd, sending a soul to its final reward (or preferably perdition).

Its followers are more than mere bullies or sadists, who terrorize their victims. This is a desperate Path, one accessible to self-loathing vampires who seek a sense of purpose in the final nights of looming Gehenna. Festering with hostility and antagonism, the company of these followers are extremely hard to abide. However, they are thoroughly sincere in their beliefs.
