I looked upon the scene before me - upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain - upon the bleak walls upon the vacant eye-like windows - upon a few rank sedges - and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees - with an utter depression of the soul, which I can compare to no earthly sensation… - Edgar Allan Poe * There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy - William Shakespeare * No Man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks. - Mary Wollstonecraft * Tell me the news, again, whatever it is... sorrow and I are hardly strangers. I can bear the worst. ― Sophocles

Ethics of the Path

Forget everything -- simply be. Focus only upon what you're doing at that moment. There's only now. You can't understand pain, temptation, and all other feelings except through feeling them. Only the present is real and each action that strives into the future or the past feeds the Beast. Offer no thought to what has been or what is to come. Neither can be affected. Changing the world is impossible, you can only change yourself to suit the world. Internalists believe that by accepting the course of the universe and following along without interfering, they cease conflicts and so shut down the Beast.

Action is focus. Thought of action is impure and inferior. There's equal value in the arts of peace and the arts of war. Study them both. Judge all by their actions, not their words. Seek out wisdom and listen to those who have it. Fight only when there's no other option, and fight with honor if you fight at all. Be wary of other vampires. Vampires are creatures eclipsed by their own darkness. Their tragedy could be your own. Pity them, but also watch them carefully. Judge others (and one's self) by what they do and how they do it, not by their words. Do not be overconfident. The overconfident do not know their limits. But equally, do not underestimate one's self.

Know yourself, intellect and Beast utterly. The visceral and intellectual are equal parts of a vampiric nature. Know when and when not to fight the Beast. The Beast is part of you, and sometimes it must be unleashed. Only by understanding it can inner peace be obtained. Master yourself. Learn your strength and weaknesses. Always learn. Always seek to strengthen your mind, body, and spirit. The Beast is a part of you, let it roam from time to time, but never let it achieve control. Be not prideful or disrespectful. Overconfidence is weakness and illusion. It's best to be humble and confident. Respect all and treat others as you would be treated yourself. You must have honor. Those who have no personal honor are worthless and lost to the world and to themselves. A being is responsible to itself and only to itself, not others.

Enjoy the company of others, but don't subsist on it. You must not let others define your value; you must do so yourself. Aiding others without being asked is striving against the universe, which will ultimately harm both you and the person you helped. Learn to love and understand that all things have their purpose -- even evil things. Being of your own free will means you must choose between the two, and good must be your choice.

Infernalists believe in God or a higher being. Believe that there's a greater purpose to everything. There's an Oversoul that guides things. Your vampirism is a test unto you. It won't taint your soul or destroy you unless you let it do so. Some say Follwors are slow and passive but they are more than capable of defending themselves. All seek to learn from experiences, and hope to glimpse a little of the workings of the universe from each new sensation. They are not idle dilettantes. Rather, they meditate on every new thing and seek to rationalize it.
