I looked upon the scene before me - upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain - upon the bleak walls upon the vacant eye-like windows - upon a few rank sedges - and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees - with an utter depression of the soul, which I can compare to no earthly sensation… - Edgar Allan Poe * There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy - William Shakespeare * No Man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks. - Mary Wollstonecraft * Tell me the news, again, whatever it is... sorrow and I are hardly strangers. I can bear the worst. ― Sophocles

Two days. They had arrived two days ago (or did they count the passing of time in nights now?) and Oskar was already bored out of his mind of "sightseeing" and wanted to get to work. Of course, that was impossible to achieve immediately. So, instead, he paced the floor of the hotel room they had acquired to begin with, until they both managed to set themselves up the way they wanted to. Katja had already made it abundantly clear that they would not be sharing a place. Which was just fine by Oskar...

Well, maybe it wasn't. But that was a matter of a completely separate and utterly frustrating conversation altogether. He had understood why he was becoming the way he was, Katja had at least had the courtesy to explain the bond, or part of it, even if Oskar had not been paying attention to all the details, which, by the way, he was never ever going to tell her.

The small back notebook in his hand and the map of the city on his phone, he walked slowly the length of the room and then back, thinking. Katja had stepped out and he had not asked her where. He normally didn't. Not that she would tell him if she didn't want to know. Still, she had been gone some time.

He glanced at the watch on his phone.

Alright, so maybe she had been gone for half an hour.

He continued pacing, trying to keep his steps slow rather than sprint from wall to wall. Concentrate! He scolded himself but after a few moments staring at the map he tossed his phone on the bed and followed it suit. There was no point in trying to do any work when all he could think about was where the hell Katja had gone...

Oskar. He was an enigma to Katja. So young and so vibrant he drew out something she had long ago thought buried. He chattered constantly, trying to draw a smile from her and positively crowing with glee when he did so. It was amusing. It was irritating. She had fled the hotel room - his hotel room despite his claims - when she had felt the Beast stir at an off hand remark.

The Beast wanted to kill him.

She knew that with a certainty. It was not just that he lived - the Beast sought to rend, tear and kill the living whenever it could - it harboured a special hatred for Oskar. The safest thing she could have done for both him and herself was to leave. One dose had been enough to save his life and stop his death weighing on her mind. She could have faded into the shadows again.

Instead she returned, fed him again (though now via hip flasks, thank you very much) and bound him to her. The idea of parting ways with him brought an urge to physically recoil. No, she had chosen her path and for good or ill, Oskar was in it.

Katja nodded with resolve and took a street at the intersection that would lead her back to his hotel. To most observers, she had walked carelessy through the streets of Turin, directing her pacing at a whim. In actuality, she was building her mental map of the city and leaning the short cuts should she need them.

It took her just over an hour to return and she slipped into the back entrance of the hotel, avoiding the staff to keep her skills sharp. At his door she knocked quietly twice in quick succession, a knock he knew to belong to her. It was safer than announcing herself by name, each time.

Oskar had to do everything in his power not to dash to the door as he heard the sound of the familiar rap on the door. Still, his movements were rather rushed and stiff. He had no idea what state of mind his domitor would return in - would she want to speak with him, as she did on rare occasions, or would she growl and want to send him away from her presence, causing them both great amounts of frustration? He couldn't say. Katy was a mystery. One, which he was eager to solve but at the same time... afraid to. What if there truly wasn't nothing beneath the surface aside from the predator?

He refused to believe that. Although his loyalty may have been to an extent artificial, having been given a vague understanding of the bond her blood could produce, it still felt extremely real and tangible. He opened the door and his eyes locked with hers. He couldn't help but smile. His brain was unable to catch up with his lips and make the greeting sound any less desperate than it came out.

"Welcome back." His tone of voice was elated, if not ecstatic. He had found, especially recently, that he preferred her company to the solitude he once used to cherish tenfold. "Missed me?" he added in jest, stepping aside to allow her back inside. It was a childish game, but he enjoyed it - he would make a suggestive comment, she would tell him off and the circle would start again. Worthwhile pastime activity without any question or doubt.

"Found anything exciting on your travels?" he asked with a chuckle as he moved back to the bed and sat down.

For her perhaps it was a chore being in his company but for him - it was an unrivalled pleasure.

"Welcome back" Katya accepted his welcome with a small nod, her tension easing as he refrained from the extravagance he sometimes used. His mind was prone to jumping topics at speeds that jarred her sensibilities, seeking responses she did not know how to give. This time, at least, he had held back.

"Miss me?" Well. He had held back for the most part. She turned quickly, her eyes scanning the familiar room by long standing habit. She did not turn fast enough to hide the small curving of her lips at his cheek. Perhaps other domitors would be riled by such audacity from their ghoul, Katya always found herself pleased. Yes, the bond kept him tied to her, but with comments like that some small part of her psyche, hidden even from her own rational mind, harboured a hope that his like of her was genuine.

"Yes. I found the streets. Another night or two and perhaps we can start looking at some operations in Turin. I'd like you to see if you can find any prime targets, if you could."
Business was a calm assurance to Katya most of the time but doubly so with Oskar. He had been a simple contact, one of many she had across countries. Now he was... something she could not define.

The Ravnos turned to her ghoul, her expression as remote as ever. She gestured with a twitch of her fingers. "I've rented the rooms either side so we can talk freely, though do not raise your voice. Oskar, I told you some things but they were just the broadest strokes of the truth." She shook her blonde hair gently. "In my experience a little knowledge is dangerous but I don't know where to start. You must have questions, ask them."
