North Korea: At the moment, we are in a very delicate situation with North Korea. if you didn't know, North Korea recently detonated a nuclear bomb at an underground test site, which was explicitly disapproved of by every western power and Japan. They have been flaunting their rebelliousness ever since their psychotic dictator Kim John-Il(sp?) got into power, but never have said been so bold. Even in the face of threats for sanctions and losing international credibility, they continue funding and expanding their nuclear program. Their only real ally is China, and even China is bending to international pressure to enforce sanctions imposed on North korea. United States has warned that although it wants to pursue a diplomatic solution, it has not ruled out other options. My question is, where is was this diplomacy in Iraq? Unlike Iraq, North Korea IS in possession of nuclear weapons. The Iraq War was justified on the pretense that Saddam "Maybe coulda would" have nuclear weapons, when in fact, Iraq's nuclear program was behind North Koreas and even Iran's nuclear program. However, Bush wanted to protect us all from the POSSIBILITY that Saddam MIGHT sometime in the FUTURE acquire nuclear techonology, and use it against us, when he had made no specific mentions of wanting to attack the United States. North Korea, on the other hand, HAS threatened us on numerous occasions, and HAS the means to do severe damage to western United States. There is no doubt in my mind that North Korea hasn't discarded the thought of reuniting the Korean peninsula again. However, the process this time is through diplomacy. Why? There are several possible reasons. One reason could be that, due to substantial failures in Middle Eastern and South Asian campaings, they didn't want to follow a simliar path, that would moth likely lead to failure. Another could be that we simply don't want confrontation with China. China is currently our ally, but it is also North Korea's ally. China is more or less acting like a sheild for NK, and while it is our ally, it would not choose our side in a confrontaion. NK is like China's little communist brother to the South, and the United States is like a friend from school. If your brother and your friend got into a fight, who would you defend? And we have good reason to want to avoid confrontaion with China. China has the largest standing army in the world, and while they don't match our technology, their sheer numbers could be a deciding factor. They also possess nuclear weapons, so that wouldn't hold any leverage on them either. Any military attack on NK would inevitably draw a military response from China. Another example I can use is Canada and U.S. If Canada and Japan were drawn into a war, who would the U.S. support? Sure Japan is our ally, but Canada is right next to us. It's really a delicate situation, which can lead to disaster. NK authority is defiant, but some well placed sanctions, might do wonders. |

You pretty much nailed it Tonic. China currently holds a good chuck of American Business. Losing open trade and having war in China means regression for America. Everything usually involves money, and every single side knows the cost and benefits of war. Bottom line is, we knew this problem existed for many years, and diplomacy is limited with NK because of many reasons. However, NK's leader has shown himself to be a mad-man, and even subjects know when to abandon ship. |

Well most like an assasssination attempt on Kim wouldn't really do much, because apparently his whole party shares his viewpoints and ideals. In this day and age, it would do more harm then good, because it would undoubtedly be discovered who the culprits were behind the attack, and even if it wasn't who would look the most culpable? It would just further and fuel the war machine NK is desperately trying to achieve. As for now, talks with north korea are having limited benefits, but the alternative is much grimmer. |

I would care! Because if Bush is assassinated, "he looked like a bird to me" Cheney will be in charge. Other then that, no, I don't care. I guess I see your point, though. |

Guys... If George Bush died... Those 30%ish people would be dissapointed. The other 70% would realise that their new president is Cheney, who is the spawn of all evil. Which is why I like him :D |

If you didn't know, there are two different Koreas. South korea is the Korea known for their RTS gaming prowess. North Korea, not so much. |

Exactly, American provides China with more business than any nation, a war with china would hurt them, almost as much as it hurts us. |

There are still gulags in North Korea, where torture and murder are being committed against "Enemies of the State", when in fact these people are doing nothing wrong. These are modern day concentration camps, where biological agents are tested on women and children, and torture administered on a daily basis for no apparent reason. They hate the United States with a passion. I can see them launching the first strike against us, whether it be nuclear or conventional. I just hope we can quell this disagreement before it's too late. |

Well South Korea is playing a dangerous game in my opinion. They are trying to please the United States as well as keeping North korea docile by sending large amounts of relief up north to their nuclear buddy. Who knows how long until Kim decides to invade South Korea. You know it's not far from his mind. You wouldn't have to worry about South Korea getting a bad rep from North korea. If someone isn't an idiot, they should know that there are two Koreas, each quite distinct from the other. |
