That's not true. In many areas gang violence and gun-related crimes are worse in Canada than the US. Edmonton was the murder capital of North America for the majority of last year, and the crime rate in Vancouver is always huge. Crime is bad in both countries, but Canada is misconstrued as a near crime free country, in some areas that's true, but mostly because we're so under populated in comparison to the fuckton of land mass in this country. |

I've pretty much decided, as long as nothing changes, that when my reserve contract is up I am going to look for a job in Canada. I feel like relocating anyway. Canada just seems so chill, and everyone I know from there, or that has been there agrees. I have two years left in my contract, and two years left of school. Timing will be perfect to get my degree, get the hell out of the military and fly :D |

The thing is though, America really has only two parties. Sure there are lots of others (I found a list once, it was long), but the only ones that stand a chance are democrats and republicans. And then you have European countries that have like 6,7,8 (guessing) major political parties. Any candidate in one of those parties stands an equal chance as any other. The only hope a minor party (in America) has of having really any impact on an election is to steal a key state (virtually impossible) so no candidate gets the required amount of electoral votes (at which point the house of representatives decides I think? Faz probably knows better than I do). Oh and loki, go to Amsterdam instead :-D Edited by DeMaGoG, Mon Jan 12, 2009 12:07 am.

A minor party would have to steal a state that would put both major parties under the 270 electoral vote requirement. That has a really slim chance of happening, I could only see it happening if some Independent Senator or something won his own state in a really tight race. |

I know that, but I just can't remember who decides who the president will be in that case. |

I, sadly, lean to the right. I'd prefer to be left handed. Just to be different. But what's done is done. |

Well... a few things. First of all, there's about 5 parties that would be commonly heard about. Liberals, Conservatives, Bloc Quebecois, NDP and Green. The Bloc... is a purely Quebec party, that basically wins almost every seat there. However, they do not get any other votes in anywhere else... since nobody runs anywhere else. So they get something like 50 seats almost everytime. There's 308 seats in total, so look at that being 258 seats that actually are open for running... which I mean isn't that big of a deal, but the fact that they aren't doing anything else. Second, this election at least, the Green party, who ran across Canada, if I'm not mistaken had more votes then Bloc or if not, very close... and yet they come out with 0 seats. So there's one big problem. Another problem is minority governments... which since theres more then 2 parties, it has been known to happen. So basically... you have Liberals and Conservatives who are the 2 main parties and only ones that ever have won... so I mean it's not awful that theres other people running, but can you see the problem this causes? And then with a minority government.... the government in power has a harder time passing laws because they need the assistance of other parties, which then has strategy, like "you pat my back, i'll pat yours" And on top of that, a minority government can be overruled, and you can have a coalition government, so basically the parties not in power can combine so that they have over 50% of the popular vote, thus taking power.... so this almost happened this past election when Harper... for a reason that I can't figure out.. apparently he thought he could win a majority(which he didn't)... so then that fucks up the whole system and then Governor General has to come in... and make a decision.... which they like do once... like every term, basically useless, so our countries government lies with one representative... So she basically didn't pass the coalition, which could be a plus or a minus... and we're back to incompetent Harper leading our country.... in the shitty, useless minority, lolz |

Lol, very interesting. So basically the same thing as America, two parties that trump everything, with a few minute parties who for some reason still run every election year? My guess is they run knowing they don't have a chance, but it's more a way to prove a point... |

yes, absolutely, but in Canada they do a tad more then America... and in turn just screw everything up :P It'd be nice if proving a point didn't mean winning any seats =D |

that it would... that it would. very few things in life ever work out that well. Not saying it doesn't happen, but its quite rare |
