i'm doing a speech on this topic and just want to hear some ideas of what you guys think of it My opinion is there should be a fat tax on junk food. There are luxury taxes on cigarettes and beer i haven't really researched it right so don't attack me if im wrong. Also i think it would be a great plan to reduce America's obesity espically in younger kids. This would make parents buy less junk food for their kids building a healthy diet as their base for when they grow up. The tax would be things like twinkles ( yumyy) ding dongs candy and also i think it would help the economy now another source of income. need opinions and detial please and also if anyone can give me a site with great info but it has to be from a .edu domain. |

Don't know too much about the issue, but "food' shouldn't have a fat tax regardless. We live in a "free" country, how people choose to eat and live shouldn't be a concern, nor should certain people have to pay extra to enjoy what they do. IE. Getting Fat with Twinkies. |

I agree, this is a free country and people should be able to eat what they want. The fat tax would really suck for skinny people like me, I eat a load of junk food, but I'm not obese... I wouldn't want to be taxed because of obese people that buy 10x as much junk food as me and my family put together... maybe I'm just immature and inexperienced at life, but the fat tax sounds pretty stupid... I can imagine a lot of obese people that would ignore the fat tax and keep buying the food that they are buying, in the quantities they are buying food in, and then not being able to pay for insulin for the diabetes they have been diagnosed with, or the high cholesterol they are struggling with... it just seems like a lot of trouble. |

I disagree if a child is brought up with terrible nutrition then they likely won't be as inclined to be a healthy eater. If you start them out right then possibly they will find it beneficial, hopefully becoming healthy eaters food is addictive, therefore junk food even more so. I believe diet is very important. |

People choose to eat what they do, it isn't forced upon them, if they develop problems out of it, that was their choice. |

This is an absolutely ridiculous idea. Here is a quote to sum up how I feel about this topic. Since fatassness is a personal choice here is a quote that sums up how I feel about this topic. "The grass isn't always greener on the other side. There has to be a bottom and that is most likely you." |

So today I heard about the Canadians and their new air traveling policy. So if a fat person wants to ride on an airplane, and they are so fat they take up a second seat... then they get that second seat for free. Why? They get the second seat for free, because if they charge them for the second seat, they fear that it is discrimination against fat people. How is this relevant to the topic? Well, in that case, I think a sort of fat tax would be sensible. If they take up two seats, then I believe that they should pay for that seat... I think this would be one of the instances where a kind kind of fat tax would be acceptable. :$ |
