First let me say to Carnal, that was a good post. /Salute Yes, Killer, a lot of vets are getting screwed. It does happen. I really would rather not go into that at this time though... Being in the Marine Corps, we do pretty much get last call or the hand-me-downs of gear. That's why we are the best trained, cause we require very little to take over a country. They rated me on the point system (PTSD) when I returned from my last deployment. I do not recieve a hell of a lot of money, but the whole handling PTSD thing is still kind of a controversy for the military at the moment. You would not believe how many people claim PTSD to get benefits. The downside is, you have to believe everyone, there is no way to really see what is going on in someone's head. Hell, I'm not crazy, I know for a fact I'm not crazy. Recently, I was put on anti - depressants because my chain of command feels I have changed since I started working with the morgue. I very seldom take them. The things I have seen this deployment are far worse than the last. Granted, I am not getting shot at this time, nor am I in any real iminent danger (besides mortars) and occasional VBIED, but I have seen the cold mother of bitch's in war : Death, and on a daily basis. You get numb to it after a while. Do I plan on claiming it when I get back? Well, I do plan on making a note of it, and going to see shrink. He's the expert he can tell me. You have to fight to get what you need, no one is going to do it for you. If you are a returning vet, you need to be aware of your options. Stay informed of what you are entitled to. That way you don't get screwed ( or sign the wrong paper work..has happened) and you get your benefits. As for a draft, I dont' see one happening unless shit gets really really bad. Total war. |

It's all about money. My sister, her bf, and 3 of my friends are all enlisted. I'm jealous of the bank they make. And pay closer attention to the fact that I am speaking in present tense, not past tense. Plus, any vets today that become homeless, they become homeless the same way civilians become homeless. You should look more into how the government pays it's service men and women. It really isn't a bad deal. Obviously when someone's time is up, the government is going to pay them anymore. They aren't working for the government, so there's no reason the government should pay them. They got paid for what they did. Only "lifers" (people who serve 20+ years) would get paid when they are discharged. It's called retirement. Regular enlisted don't get retirement. As for your buddy, I'm sorry. But PTSD is a known risk in wartime. Smart people realize the risks and know that it's not the government's fault. The gov't usually gives medical care, but that's basically it. It's not obligated to do anything else. They didn't force your friend to fight for the country. However, if he were drafted, then they would be obligated to make reparations. But I know he was not forced into the military by the gov't, so your point is invalid. Edited by Aztec, Sun Jan 25, 2009 8:48 pm.

You don't get paid for PTSD unless it has a dramatic enough effect on your life where you can't work. In a sense you will get paid. Heres how : If you can't sleep at night ( ME) : They will pay for your prescription drugs If you have anxiety problems : They will pay.. ETC, ETC, ETC... They don't have to pay you cash for PTSD unless you are disabled from the PTSD. In which you will recieve disability pay. If the PTSD is bad enough, you may be medically discharged from the military. The only things you will get paid for are serious injuries, missing limbs, etc. Oh and yes, you can make bank in the military. Especially in the reserves ( activated reservist make a fuck ton more than active duty) I bring in almost 1900$ for 2 weeks of work, while deployed. In the states (on active duty) I bring in about 1400$ for 2 weeks. This is almost double what active duty makes. Just some advice. You can make some big bank, this is my second back to back deployment. Last deployment I put a down payment on a nice house, when I get back this time I plan on getting myself a brand new lexus ISF :D AND YES I BELIEVE THE MILITARY IS UNDERPAID! Yeah I have a friend who is in the Marines Reserves. His unit is being disbanded, so he is planning on going active duty for deployment in Iraq. He says he would get paid 30k for that. I think it's just a 6 month deployment. But if he doesn't go active duty, it's because he is going into the NROTC program in which school is paid for him and he gets paid to go to school, and do nothing else. That's one of those incentives I was talking about lol. And then there is extra pay such as hazard pay and others that I can't remember off the top of my head. Basically, if you get deployed, you come back temporarily rich, depending where you were deployed, of course. Edited by Aztec, Mon Jan 26, 2009 3:57 pm.

All that is very true CarNaL, I am in the reserves as well. Thank God. I'd lose my mind if I had to stay active. |
