Some of the greatest thinkers in the world answer a simple question: how will we get around in 80 years?

Very thought-provoking. Thoughts?

This meaning self-mobility as in "power-scooters" and walkers, or travel as in cars, planes, etc?

When i worked at Walmart, I had to deal with the laziest fucking people. As you know, all Walmarts have those power scooters for the disabled people. Someone would come looking for something, and I'd say it'd be in Garden Center, and they'd say something like "You mean I have to walk ALL the way over to the garden center!?" Yes, I'm sorry, you have to get a miniscule amount of exercise to get your fucking birdseed. I'm sorry I didn't stock any here in the laundry detergent like you expected it to be.

It's my theory that ten years from now, we'll all have power scooters in stores, and no grocery carts. And maybe even outside of the stores, because people are tired of walking. And I'd even run into a few people with the scooters who'd complain about having to travel across the store. "You mean I have to push and hold this goddamn button all the way across the store? Maybe I'll just take my business to Target or K-Mart, where they'll wipe my ass for me."

In 80 years I could see us having teleportation, since power scooters will eventually become too much effort for people to exert.

Screw that. I'm gonna be walking when I'm 90, no matter what technology comes to. And if walking isn't allowed, I'm boycotting. Hmph.

If by teleportation you mean "Beam me up scotty" I dont think I can ever see that happening. Seems a little bit too far fetched. Now, perhaps some kind of incredibly fast vehicles directly linked to diff parts of a town or area, that seems a little bit more realistic. Trains now reach up to 500+ kMph safely and smoothly, and could quite possibly become faster than airplanes. Not to mention they are ridiculously cheaper and better for our environment. I believe they go hand in hand with magnetic levitation. The tracks are magnetic, no engines or anything, and raise the trains 10 mm or so off the track so technically they are flying.

Yeah i think if anything its going to have to do with magnets or gravity but I don't think teleportation will ever be possible considering all the matter that has to be transported

Not just transported, but the matter has to be broken down, and, at a different location, be reformed. If you aren't careful, your organs may be outside of you :P

It's not even that lol. Ripping apart your entire body into single atoms is from what I believe, impossible? lol. Transporting an item of matter to another is.. impossible? Reforming them exactly as they are is... impossible? Regardless of what anybody says, that's science fiction and will always be science fiction.

If this is possible, than so is traveling faster than the speed of light.

Just like going to the moon, and submarines.

The part that intrigued me the most was when he talked about your entire house being a mobile unit. That would change the face of the world enormously, it would be incredible though.

It was a joke, guys. I don't think we're going to be teleporting in eighty years. It was just the laziest way of moving around I could think of. Don't get all quantum-physicky on me, Vic.

Oh, no its chill. I understood/caught on that you were joking. I was just having fun thinking about it, and others were starting to state it could be possible, so yeah.

On topic, I'm almost 100% positive magnetic levitation and computer controlled vehicles will be the future, similar to iRobot the movie [with Will Smith] The way I see it working is similar to how trains do [i explained earlier] but magnets of sorts under the surface of the street ground. They would push and pull all according to a computer which would add incredible safety as well speed. Now whether or not everybody uses it in 80 years, I believe not, but I believe fossil fuels will be obsolete by then, and we'll have moved on to water bases or even gas based by then as the original, perhaps even magnetic. It's hard to say.

Has anyone seen the movie Wall-E?
I know its a kids movie, but i loved it. It shows a lot of eerie signs.
I think in all honesty that's where we're going to end up. Maybe not on a giant spaceship, but like that.

Haha, yeah, that movie was awesome, and I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw this. They're so huge... and they don't have to walk. They don't even communicate face-to-face (I mean physically, not through their levitating chair screens).

I couldn't see Wall-E happening lol. It's in human nature to be active and communicate. Nobody likes solitary confinement. Perhaps that's just your guys perceptive of the US, but many other countries are the exact opposite of us. lol.

Lmao, when they walked for the first time. They're all just like giant babies, oh that movie was sweet.

Anyway, i was talking more along the lines of technology, and those hover-beds, whatever they rode on. And the flow of traffic, robots to do all our work, etc. Eventually Earth could end up like that also, it's all a very real scenario.

Well, they've kind of already managed to transport "data" faster than the speed of light by entangling electrons. In the future it might be possible to "entangle" larger particles in large quantities to the point where it is possible to travel faster than the speed of light. I doubt this is happening in 80 years though. 180 maybe.
