I don't know if you guys have noticed or not, but recent tax increase has made all tobacco products more expensive by a dollar. The federal government says that they are doing it so they can implement the promised plan of health care proposed by Obama. Thas another thing I want to discuss, Who believes in government health care i.e Socializing of health care? Canada is a example of this. Edited by UnConquerable, Sat Apr 4, 2009 9:58 am.

I also heard there is going to be an increase on alcoholic beverages soon, but I'm not sure about that. I personally don't care that much because I don't smoke and I don't drink anymore so it won't effect me at all. A sales tax increase isn't a bad thing at all.. it's just surprising to see it go up THIS much. I voted for a sales tax increase in my county, it wasn't passed though :(. People hear "increase and tax" and they have a bitch fit, but the positive side is that EVERYONE pays sales tax. That means all of the illegal immigrants, probably from Mexico, will have to pay it as well. In the long run I think it will work.. but I don't like that it went up this much at one time. However it will effect the people that are already addicted to cigarettes and who are already poor as fuck but still manage to spend 20$ a carton for cigarettes a week, now it will be 40-50$ a week. A bunch of people won't be able to afford it and they will quit smoking. If this happens then the major tobacco companies will lose a ton of their business. There will also be an increase in cigarette and alcohol bootlegging(just like it use to be when it was illegal). I never thought I would say this, but I think this would be a good time to legalize weed, then tax the ever loving shit out of it. Edited by LanterN, Sat Apr 4, 2009 12:21 pm.

I'd say it's a good idea. Cigarette smoking is a nasty habit anyway and the less viable they make it for people to smoke, the better. |

Smoking = Natural selection at work. I'd honestly like to see cigarettes banned. They serve no use, in my mind. Since that will never happen, just tax smokers' stupidity like hell. Unconquerable, just about every developed country in the world besides the US has socialized health care. Americans seem to think it's some communist thing, though, because you could write what most know about international politics on a sticky pad. |

Smoking relieves stress, or adds the "cool" factor in some peoples view. That's its only good use. |

Tobacco relieves stress. True, but it's still bullshit you don't need it to relieve stress that's in you're mind

well.. government health care, given that I am Canadian, my opinion is horribly biased on this situation. Just some input about what results I see in Canada. Personally, I agree with it completely. I think that the chance people have... to have equal opportunity for health care is very important. It might be different in America, because Canada does have more socialist beliefs. But for me, I don't see much to complain about with government health care. |

I don't believe in Socializing of health care because I come from a country that has socialized health care. From My experience I have seen that it leads to rationing of medicine and other amenities. Government run anything is a bad idea, It will have a certain degree of corruption not to mention that it over burdens the tax payer. As far as Canada is concerned, a dog could get a MRI faster then you arbiter. |

Highly doubt that. And anyways, all I'm saying, is I personally agree with many of the benefits it provides. There are many private clinics/etc... that will provide you with specific medicare. Not all health care is government funded. A large portion, though, yes. If you are desperate, or in need, and you have the money, then good for you... you have it. If you are not that fortunate, u atleast have a chance.. without being completely screwed over. |

See in that case they should have just raised the Sales tax, why just tax the tobacco? I think it would have been fair for all. If people really wanna tax someone they should tax the guys buying the high priced goods. I think in hindsight they should at least raise the taxes on high priced luxury items like jets and cars above 100 K. |

Conservative pundits hate things like this, and look for any excuse they can to make Obama out to be a socialist, but this is a good thing. I mean, if you raised the taxes on anything, it might as well be tobacco, right? If as many people die from smoking and second-hand smoke a year as the commercials suggest, this will help healthcare in more ways that one. |
