I have been contemplating whether or not I want to join. Everybody says go Navy, but I don't like water or ships lol. I am planning on becoming a firefighter after college, will be attending community college for Fire Safety, and having a military background could perhaps speed the process up some, as well pay for it somewhat. Anybody with some military experience want to give me some say?

If you're going to be a fire fighter, the army is the way to go. The ait force is a fucking joke and being a fire fighter just doesn't sound right going for the Navy.

If you are going for it, you might as well go all the way. Join the Marines. The Army is the easy way and is for people who aren't tough enough for the Marines.

I disagree really, the Marine's imo as well many people I know in it and other military branches is just brain wash, do what we say period thats it.
The airforce and Navy [ship wise] must know how to take out fires, theres always a fire fighter on board in case of emergency and you learn alot of EMT shit which is also Fire fighting material, you also take fire safety classes. The army was just the grunge work i wanted. It's also however the longest term oversees I believe, Air force is 3 months, navy is 6 months, Army is 1 year.

This just proves you know nothing at all about the Military. Special forces and fucking delta force > any marine squad out there. While the army is a year overseas, it all depends on what unit you get sent to. Most units deploy once every 3-4 years. My unit gets deployed every other year.

Yeah thats what I was referring to, a 4 year term and 2 years over seas, with a 1 month pullback every 6 months.

Oh well if you want to go into special forces and stuff like that, you're right. The Marines is just the Marines. However, excluding special forces and delta force and rangers and green berets, the Army is just the Army. If you're a Marine and want to go into stuff like that, you join the Navy Seals, which, argumentatively, is at the top. Even in competitions among them, the Seals have come out on top. A regularly trained Marine is much more deadly than a regularly trained Army boy.

And I'm curious, what evidence do you have of "brain wash?" I mean, I could say that the Fed. Gov't is using subliminal sonic waves to control the minds of Americans. But I don't have any proof of that...

Hate to break the news to you but there is no such thing as a month pullback every 6 months. My unit was deloyed for 15 months and they got 2 weeks the whole 15 months back home. Don't listen to what other people tell you, it's not the truth.
@Terminate: Depeding on what you're talking about, the marine isn't always superior. When it comes to rifle training and combatives, then yes, the marines are more thoroughly trained. When it comes to anything else that relates to war and training, the Marines are lacking in every other category.

Im not listening to what people tell me, I'm talking off what my friends in the Army have done. During my friends term in Iraq, 5 n 1/2 months in he was shipped back for 4 weeks to come see his family and what not. Then he went back to base and was re shipped. While at his Georgia base he gets 2 week returns every 3-6 months as well. Going back for his 2nd term overseas next year as well to finish his 4 year term. So sounds like you just got a shitty deal.

Wow really Zane? =/

I'm kinda in the same situation, it's my senior year and I haven't really made decisions as far as my life goes.

I applied to Colorado School of Mines and got accepted, have to make a decision by May 1st

I may get an apartment near a community college and work/school for 2 years, then transfer out to CU boulder School of Mines

My parents suggested that I look into the military and such but I haven't. Don't know shit about it.

I do want to pursue a career in engineering though..

Idk why I'm saying all this, maybe someone can relate or has advice as far as the military goes

Join the Navy. You can take classes for engineering, and you won't really be on the front lines of war. Sounds like you'd like to join without the risk of death being there.

I'm going to be joining the military this September as well, except I'm going to join the RMC in England. It actually surprised me how much more intense the RMC is compared to the general military in North America. I've heard nothing but terrible things about the US Army, so I personally would avoid it, I think it's mostly because of where you get deployed to. I would hate to be over there.

I didn't get a shitty deal, I just got stuck with the best unit in the entire army excluding rangers and such. My unit is the most deployed unit in the army and it will continue to be a slong as there is still a war going on.

Well give it a lot of thought before you sign anything. Once you're in, they literally own you for "x" amount of years. It isn't something you can just call in sick one morning because you don't feel like getting up to run. The military isn't for everyone, just make sure you know what you're getting into. Try to get a MOS/Job that provides you with useful training that can land you a nice civilian job when you get out.
The military isn't for everyone, just make sure you're not one of those people. Don't get stuck in something that your heart isn't into.
Your military career will literally make or break your civilian career when you get out.
