Schwarzenegger said in a press conference when asked about marijuana that he felt the legalization of recreational use of it should be debated. He declared his position as "open-minded." My friends, when a politician says that he or she is "open-minded," he or she definitely wants to support it. 56% of Californian voters believe that the legalization of recreational use of marijuana would help boost the economy. And I'm sure that more than 56% of Californians support it. I do. Now I would love for people who don't support it to leave comments. Discuss your side. And, of course, the supporters, help defend our side! This is, after all, "Serious Discussion." Keep it nice folks! |

The majority of heavy stoners that I know of are complete failures at life. I know there are intelligent pot smokers, but people who use the drug excessively tend to just be braindead. There are people who smoke casually and are good people, my sister and a lot of my friends included. I've seen a significant number of people- far more than alcohol users- who abuse the drug, even with it illegal. Legalizing its use would indubitably raise that number. If monitored, I could see marijuana being similar to alcohol. But lets be honest, is alcohol really aiding our society? How many people suffer from abuse due to alcohol? How many people die because of irresponsible use? I personally don't think tobacco should be legal either, and I would like to see the punishments for drunk driving and other drug-related crimes raised enormously. Would it make money? Probably. So would legalizing gladiatorial combat and selling tickets for executions. Laws are supposed to be based on moral reasons, not monetary ones, and the state of the economy should not be in any way related to the legality of drug use. When people give this as a reason for why weed should be legal I don't know how they don't get laughed at. |

I don't think it seems so bad to have it legalized in the Netherlands simply because they're on a much smaller scale when compared with the U.S. |

I just watched something on the BBC network. It asked a rhetorical question, Where is marijuana legal. Answer: No where. |

Those are potheads. Idk how it is everywhere, but here in San Diego, "stoners" aren't people who abuse it. They use it to have a good time. "Potheads" use it nonstop as if they need it. That's how the terms are used in my area... Just thought I'd let you know. Oh and also, don't compare marijuana to alcohol. They have very little in common. If it were legalized, you would see a different result than you saw with the end of prohibition. It has different effects on the mind. That's is the main reason, but not the only reason I say this. Legalizing pot is good for the economy as people will actually buy it but it's a terrible idea when you really think about it. The hardcore stoners will simply smoke more than ever since they can't get in trouble, and the every once and a while smokers will increase their smoking habits as well. That's the only way I think it relates it to alcohol. To me, if we want to strengthen the economy, it's on of the best ideas there is but from an ethics standpoint, it's a fucking terrible idea. I'm not for or against it, just felt like adding something to the conversation |

You were? Because your point, which I'm not even going to bother to check, isn't even related to my argument at all. |

The only people that should be arguing here are the stoners. But there's really nothing to argue over, rejoice my brothers! Unless James got high yesterday like he said he might, I think I read that somewhere.. Whats the video link for? Proof that Marijuana and Alcohol have something in common? They don't. ;\ Too lazy to click. |

I don't think that there will be a dramatic change in the number of people smoking. It will get the crap taxed out of it, so it will probably cost more than it does being sold illegally. And most people can't afford to smoke all the time right now anyway. And I'm totally with WildChild. Oh and you gotta keep in mind that it's not just the tax revenues that would boost the economy. This would create jobs as well. Also, our tax dollars won't be wasted on non-violent marijuana related misdemeanors and some felonies. That means less people in our jail system, which means less crowded jails, which means less money spent on criminals. Edited by Aztec, Fri May 8, 2009 3:50 am.

Something you also need to think about, is it will still be illegal depending on how much you have on your person. I guarentee they're not gonna let someone walk around with a pound of weed. |

Actually Eternal, if you have your medical card on you I think you're able to have up to 3 pounds on you. But I guess if they are to legalize it I'm sure the legal amount wouldn't be that much. Maybe a pound. More than that should be a medical card, lol. I hear they're worried about the fact kids might start doing it now that it's legal. Simple solution, age restriction 21. and a boost in crime? More like a boost in peace. I don't think anyone can commit a crime and get away with it while high. |
