I don't know much about it myself, but I know that the United States is literally the only developed country in the world without Universal Health Care. If for no other reason than that, I support it. |

Unfortunately, this isn't universal healthcare. It's more like mandated insurance purchase, which theoretically should drive costs down for everyone. We'll have to wait and see. I watched the whole debate leading up to the vote, and the childishness and "obstructionism for the sake of obstructionism" is pretty scary to watch, especially considering these are supposedly the brightest among our civil servants. |

I watched it on Politico.com. They might have a "best of" somewhere on youtube. It got pretty tense and confrontational at times. It's worth looking into if political bickering is something you enjoy, although debates in Congress can otherwise be a tedious watch if the subject isn't particularly controversial or partisan in nature. It's worth noting that not a single Republican voted for the healthcare bill which extends access to more than 30 million Americans and reduces the deficit simultaneously. Even considering more than 90 Republican amendments are included in the bill. Edited by Tonic, Mon Mar 22, 2010 8:25 am.

I watched a few hours of the debate on C-SPAN. In that bit that I watched, either side got some time to argue their side. Democrats basically repeated themselves over and over, saying, "Look, this is what we're getting with this bill. No pre-existing condition bullshit, no caps on lifetime coverage, kids get to be on 'til they're 26, etc." I started watching about 4 hours into it, and both of the senators from my state, Wyoming, had just taken the floor. Granted I did not watch the entire debate, as it got tedious with all of the repetition, but as I watched my two senators give their arguments I could not help but feel like I was watching some kind of weird, late-night, pseudo infomercial. Really, it seemed to be horribly scripted. Barasso and Enzi (WY senators) took on the roles of the infomercial host, telling you about all the product. Then, McCain took on the role of the dumb blonde assistant, asking questions about the product that the host is trying to sell. Really, it was just strange. McCain interrupted so frequently, and every question he asked Barasso or Enzi sounded scripted, along with their answers. [Consequently, one of the senators (Enzi) ended up spotting a problem with two provisions concerning Pell grants from the government for low-income students. This effort was the only success for the republicans throughout, and it resulted in the bill having to be sent back to the house one last time.] Other than that, the republicans introduced a bunch of political bullshit amendments (41 to be total). A lot (most) of these were, like Tonic said, obstructionism for the sake of obstructionism. Not one passed. I honestly cannot see how the GOP can expect much of anything to come from the midterm elections, and I live in Wyoming (I can't have a discussion about health care in this state without someone expressing the belief that we have fallen into the death grip of socialism and life as we know it is over). Barring some kind of disaster for Obama, republicans don't have much of anything to show. Even the Tea Party that they desperately cling to seems to want to shake them. Personally, I'd have liked a better system with more "government interference," but this bill's passage is a breath of fresh air. Keep working on the Race to the Top business, end the bad joke that is don't ask, don't tell, Obama.
If only. Don't gotta get my own insurance for another 4 years! Huzzah! Also, if anyone's interested, some pro-health care legislators have been getting some nasty, threatening phone calls. They're odd and really work as a great tribute to the power of propaganda. Saw them on msnbc, but I'm sure they're somewhere on the internet. Edited by Sifl, Fri Mar 26, 2010 5:59 am.

It's funny how those who are against this bill (working class, poor, less fortunate republicans for the most part) are the ones who need health insurance the most. What I'm about to say can probably be labeled some sort of fallacy of logic, and doesn't have much to do with healthcare argument, but I've kind of just learned to ignore what conservative people complain about. Because, they're the same people who most predominantly bought into the Red Scare, Y2K, post-911 fear of anthrax and bombs at their own backdoor in bumfucked, TX, avian flu, swine flu, west nile disease, fucking SARS, etc. They never win, and are usually never right. |

The reason for your first statement is Talk Radio and Fox News. Yes, the poor people within the country need health-care the most and are the majority of those complaining about it. When you have your rich republicans running Talk Radio and Fox News that spews nothing but lies to their poorer counterparts, this is only to be expected. They've turned the Obama administration into a growing communist//socialist dictatorship and its fucking despicable. Sadly, my mother falls into the category of the devout watcher and listener to Fox News and Talk Radio. There is no substance to her arguments, just broad, over-the-top, nonsensical statements. These statements don't change day to day despite having been corrected the day before... Its a never ending cycle of intentional ignorance. She doesn't want to believe health care was promoted and signed into law for the better, regardless of what I say to her. EDIT: SIFL, ROFL @ URE SIG LMAO LMAO. Hmm, seems like we agree on something. I live in western PA and the talk radio lineup for any given day is: Quinn and Rose, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Jerry Doyle There's literally no dissenting opinion at all. It's a nonstop race-baiting, fear-mongering, apocalyptic paranoia fest that the government is coming to eat your children and shut down your church, and that Obama is an ex-KGB/Muslim/Kenyan/Karl Marx reincarnate/Hitler reincarnate/Communist/Nazi/Antichrist etc etc. If people are fed this garbage day in and day out, then will it really be a surprise when some crazy redneck on a post-Glenn Beck high goes out and shoots up a post office or a Congressmen's home? I'm curious to see how the Republicans will play this election cycle. They have essentially voted to deny 36 million Americans healthcare coverage, they will have to argue against the immediate Medicare rebates seniors will be receiving, they will have to convince people that allowing children to stay on their parent's insurance until 25 is a bad thing, and they will have exactly 0 legislative achievements to call their own. They have done nothing for the past year except try to impede Democratic efforts at jump-starting the economy and addressing social issues concerning a large percentage of Americans. It's interesting that Republicans claim to represent the will of the people while being the minority party. How can the minority party be representative of the majority? A majority party doesn't become a majority party unless a majority of Americans vote them in, so the fact that majority of Americans voted Democrat for the last two election cycle obviously means that they identify with the Democratic political platform. The minority seems to be making the most noise at the moment (because the rest of us have jobs) because of the frenzy they are being whipped into by conservatives who can't get over the fact that the country is being successfully led by a black man. Funny how spending and budget deficits only get the attention of the mostly-white tea-partiers when a black president is in office. Where were these "fiscal hawks" and "constitutionalists" when Bush was spending billions on unnecessary war and presiding over the largest expansion of government since Roosevelt. Spending billions on a war deemed illegal and irresponsible by the international community and costing the lives of thousands of young Americans? No problem. Spending billions on improving the lives of millions of Americans and actually saving lives in the process? SOCIALISM |

Funny how there's an ad here on the Forums against the Health bill. It has Obama dressed like the Heath Ledger version of the joker. Anyone else see it yet? Whose in charge of what ads are put on here, anyway? |
