For years now I have looked for a place on the Internet to warehouse or store my vast collection of trivia and other things, I have collected over the years about the soap opera genre. I have also looked for a place where not only the current soaps are loved but the history of the genre as well.

I have tried many places and even have ventured out into one MSN sites at one time, but at the time did not have enough time to devote to the site to get it off the ground. I have found many places that I enjoy discussing things, but whereas I love all soaps and honor all soaps they seem to put emphasis on certain soaps and ignore others. Or they have inane rules that only certain shows are soap operas and others are not.

I have debated for awhile now about venturing into another website, and just recently decided to go for it.

At SoapsWEB, I will report on the current happenings in daytime, but there will also be an emphasis on honoring the history of the soap opera genre from it's beginnings in radio to it's current incarnations in daytime and primetime television.

In the discussion area, I will have areas for current news, spoilers and episode discussion but discussion of the cancelled shows of yesterday will be intermingled.

I hope that you enjoy your stay here. I have decided at this point not to have censorship, and I hope that I can keep it that way. As long as the privilege is not abused, it will stay that way.

I look forward to getting to know all of you, and I hope that this will become one of your favorite spots to hang out.

Until recently access to the whole site has been open to guests as well as members. Due to some recent problems, certain areas of the site now require a membership. We are sorry for the inconvenience this might cause but look forward to getting to know you.

1. No bashing any other poster.
2. No bashing of any other board.
3. Respect one another.
4. Have fun.
5. There will no spamming. Spamming is posting links that are not soap opera related and are intended to offer things for sale to members. And there will be no posting of nudity or pornography on the main board.
6. You are not allowed to PM members and invite them to check out another board.
7. You are only allowed to have 2 banners or images in your signature. Please limit them to no larger than 250 x 800 pixels. You cannot advertise another forum in your banner. See below for more information in the FAQ area.
8. You are allowed to post rumors or gossip about soap opera actors, but you are not allowed to pass judgement on them or call them names.
9. Do not bait other posters with the intent of stirring up trouble.
10. Curse words are allowed as long as they are not used as a name to bait or criticize another poster. [i.e. do not call someone a bitch or a faggot]
11. Any member who joins needs to post at least once every 90 days to keep their account active. All inactive accounts will be deleted after 90 days of inactivity.
12. Any member will be allowed 5 warnings. After the 5th warning you will be banned from SoapsWEB permanently.
13. If a person recieves a warning, that warning can be removed at the member's request after 60 days - provided that member has not recieved another warning in that time frame.
14. Memberships are based on different levels. All members will go up the following chain of membership: Validating Member (0 posts); New Member (1-24 posts); Junior Member (25-49 posts); Member (50-99 posts); Elite Member (100-149 posts); Advanced Elite (150-249 posts); Super Elite (250+ posts). At each level you will notice that you are allowed more PM storage; the ability to e-mail more folks; the ability to mass PM more folks; and several other advantages to establishing yourself as a faithful poster of SoapsWEB.
15. Make sure you have permission to use any picture you post on SoapsWEB -- please respect copyright! Please do not post an image directly in a post if it is not housed on your own server (for example, a photobucket account you donít own) This is called hotlinking, and is bandwidth theft. If you have permission, you can upload the picture to your own server, or to a free host such as Photobucket. A very popular service used now is ImageShack, where you can even provide a thumbnail to stay within the image guidelines for users to click on for a larger image: ImageShack. When it doubt, please just post the link to the photo instead. See below for more info on hotlinking and bandwidth.
16. Please do not post ads for personal gain in the banner or threads.
17. Emailing or PMing a member through this board to harass another member will get you instantly banned.
18. All soap operas will be regarded as soap operas and no differences will be made in them that is not accepted by the wide majority of people. There will be no references that true soap operas are this or that.
19. If a site says Link Only on an article, do not post that article on SoapsWEB or even post a link to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the signature guidelines?

Please limit yourself to 2 banners or images in your signature not exceeding 250 x 600 pixels. Make sure you have permission to post the image you are posting in your signature if you do not own it.

2. What is hotlinking and bandwidth theft?

Bandwidth theft or "hotlinking" is direct linking to a web site's files (images, video, etc.). An example would be using an <img> tag to display a JPEG image you found on someone else's web page so it will appear on your own site, eBay auction listing, weblog, forum message post, etc.

Bandwidth refers to the amount of data transferred from a web site to a user's computer. When you view a web page, you are using that site's bandwidth to display the files. Since web hosts charge based on the amount of data transferred, bandwidth is an issue. If a site is over its monthly bandwidth, it's billed for the extra data or taken offline.

A simple analogy for bandwidth theft: Imagine a random stranger plugging into your electrical outlets, using your electricity without your consent, and you paying for it.

3. Why should I stop hotlinking?
Hotlinking can have a lot of undesirable consequences. One is the so-called "switcheroo". If you've linked to an image on someone's server, what's to prevent them from changing the image you linked to? This can have humorous results. Since most sites, forums, etc. have strict policies about offensive images, it wouldn't take much for an aggravated webmaster you've been stealing bandwidth from to shut you down completely with an unwanted "switcheroo".

Displaying an image or file that doesn't belong to could be a violation of copyright, making you open to litigation. The owner of the file could utilize DMCA law to have your site shut down and your information given for use in legal proceedings.

4 When can I apply to serve on staff?

To serve on staff a member must have reached Member status (50 posts) and have been a member for at least 1 month.

5 Are there any restrictions to what can be posted at this site?

SoapsWEB is a non-censored board which means you can curse on the board and you can post gossip and state your opinions openly about stars and those in the public eye. We ask that you please do not judge actors & actresses, or call them names. You cannot verbally attack another member of this board though, and you cannot bait another poster. We also ask that on the main board you do not post any sexually related pictures, videos, etc. as there is a place for them in The Adult Play Room. In The Reading Room, From These Roots will have some rated material and some minor nudity from time to time, but you will be warned as that is done. Again we ask that even in that section there be nothing extreme triple X type stuff, but you may see stuff in the neighborhood of Nip/Tuck, etc. Any post or posts that in our opinion are defamatory, harassing, bigoted, abusive or otherwise exist solely to insult or violate these rules will be removed.

6 Can I post spoilers?

Yes. Please post them in the appropriate thread and always have a source for your information. Please no spoiler information in the general discussion areas.

7. Can I post links?

We do ask that no one post links that are to solicit money, sales, or any such thing to harrass our members. In other words - NO SPAMMING. Links to other soap related sites are fine or links to news, etc.

8. When can I change my user/screen name or adjust it?

Once you have reached Member (50 posts) status, you can change or adjust your screen/user name. When you reach that point, PM an administrator with what change you want made, and they will notify you by e-mail when it is completed.

9. How do I embed a You Tube video in my post?

You must do use the:

Code:

[flash=425,344][/flash]

along with the URL for the YouTube video (not the Embed info)

Example:

Code:

[flash=425,344]http://youtube.com/watch?v=UvU6X7S41F4&feature=rec-fresh[/flash]

Which turns into this if done correctly:

10. How do I add a poll?

Make a new topic.

Then look close to the bottom where you'll see the text "New Poll" underneath the spot where the emoticons are and click it, it will expand the bottom of the post screen and look like this.
