Regions The country is sparated into 4 regions 1) Crops and Animals 2) Fishing and Import/Export 3) Minerals/Ore and Military Might 4) The "Noble" Region These regions are known for their principle product, though it isn't uncommon for other regions to dabble in the products of another region. These regions possess several villages scattered throughout, most of them being fairly small (50-100), though some of them can be fairly large for a village (100-300) and typically grow larger the closer they get to the central region. At the center of the country is a central region in which the regional nobility and those of upper class reside. This region is comprised of several large cities in which these nobles reside. Due to this, these cities have vibrant social life that these groups rely on as well as a somewhat thriving business/merchant section. At the center of this region is the largest city in the country within which resides the daimyo. Politics Overview There is a heirarchal system that operates within the country. At the top/center is the country daimyo, born into his wealth. Below him are the three "regional nobles" each one in charge of regulating their specific region. Below them are the various "lesser nobles" or magistrates that have been granted control of a specific area within a region to enforce the will of either the daimyo or the regional noble. Below them is the common citizen. Each region is considered "sovereign" from the other region such that the laws and regulations imposed on a region by its regional noble do not carry over into another region. What may be perfectly legal in one region maybe be extremely illegal in another. They all, however, must obey the laws created by the daimyo which carry throughout all regions. Greedier than his father before him, the current daimyo has been increasing taxes on the nobility who have in turn been increasing taxes on the common people. This has led to widespread poverty amongst the outer villages. The poverty has caused several bandit groups to form and operate throughout the regions. It is not uncommon for these bandits to kidnap women and children from villages within a region and sell them into slavery in another region or even another country. While one may think that the regional nobles would put a stop to this banditry, they are often more concerned with getting their money than ensuring the happiness of their people. So long as the villagers are still able to produce their products and therefore their money, the nobles take a very "hands off" approach. Region 1 - Agriculture Regional Noble: This region sits on miles and miles of rich farmland, perfect for cultivating crops and raising livestock. Most villages within this region are farming villages who's produced crops are then sold throughout the country through trade with other regions. The people of this region are known to be hardworking individuals with a strong sense of community and family. As villagers rarely leave the village that they have been born in and newcomers rarely show up, villages become like a collective family with children of the village being raised seemingly by the entire village rather than a single family. Family's also tend to be quite large as the larger the family, the more hands they have to work the fields and feed the animals. This region is most prone to attacks by bandit groups as their crop stores are easily stolen or destroyed. As such, some of these villages have formed militias of sorts to try and fend the bandits off as best as possible. Region 2 - Ore and Weaponry Regional Noble: This region is known to be somewhat more mountainous than the other regions within the county. While the soil in some parts of this region is good for farming, the regions primary export/product is metal ore which is then crafted into tools and weaponry. These are then sold to other regions and even exported to other countries through region 3. Due to the nature of their work, citizens of this region tend to be a little rough in personality. Many of the villages in this region originally formed around a specific mine the was found to contain metal ore. Once the mine is located, citizens begin to gather looking for work and a village soon forms. When the mine is determined to have been completely cultivated, the villagers often begin to leave in search of new work and the village eventually becomes deserted. As such, personal relationships in these villages rarely extend beyond family, as once the work is over, many of the villagers do not see each other again unless they find themselves working another mine together. Additionally, given the danger of the job they perform, many villagers see it as pointless to get attached to someone who could easily be dead by the day's end. Given that the ore that they mine is often used to make tools and weapons, this region is also more militaristic than the other regions. Most citizens, men and women, know how to wield a weapon of some kind, though not all of them necessarily know how to do so well. Additionally, given the potential dangers of working in the mines or in the forges, the mindset of the citizens is often beneficial for combat positions. It is for these reasons that the daimyo will often look to this region when recruiting warriors for his "army". Region 3 - Merchants and Fishing Regional Noble: This region tends to possess more bodies of water than the other regions a great deal of these lands back up to the sea. While the soil is fair enough for farming, this region's main function revolves around its booming fishing industry and its sea based import/export capabilities. Having established trade routes with other countries, this is the region that is primarily responsible for the entire country's imports and exports. While hardworking like the citizens of the other regions, the citizens of this region tend to be more free spirited than the citizens of the others. As many citizens tend to become either fishermen or merchants, it is very common for citizens of this region to leave their hometowns and venture out into the other regions or even into other countries. They are therefore thought to be considered more "worldly" or "well traveled". This region tends to be favored more by the nobility as, without its continued success, they risk not being able to export their goods to other countries or, perhaps worth, they risk not being able to import some of their "guilty pleasures" that can only be found outside of the country. This favoritism often creates a bit of tension with the other countries, especially region 2 who feel that region 3 profits off of their hard work. |

New idea to explore: 3 vassal states in service to a single kingdom. - Each operates independently of each other but is at the mercy of the kingdom. - Each has a somewhat different form of government. ---- Region 1 uses a single ruler with regional magistrates. ---- Region 2 uses a council of tribal leaders ---- Region 3 uses an elected leader |
