It was rather dreary out. The sun was hiding behind some clouds, grey ones at that, although the wind wasn't blowing so it wasn't cold out. Dahlia was dressed comfortably enough, wearing a pair of old jeans that were starting to rip and tear in various places, along with an equally holey black t-shirt and a pair of boots that seemed to be a size or two too large for her. The park was a nice, quiet place that Dahlia sometimes came to when she needed to think. In particular she found the playground to be a nice place, often sitting on the edge of the slide or hanging upside down from the monkey bars. Today she had come to the park on a whim, wanting to get away from her grandparents for a little while. They were wonderful to her, but sometimes all that sugary sweetness made her teeth ache. Besides, she needed to think and be by herself. After she had shown off to the younger kids in Greave, it hadn't occured to her that they'd run off and tell their parents first thing. Well of course they would, she thought wryly. They're kids. They tell their parents everything. Dahlia hadn't meant to be a show off, it's just that the little town was so very boring, and her act had made all the youngsters go 'ooh' and 'aah'. She'd made little drawings in chalk on the side of the school building, which wouldn't have been a problem if she hadn't made them so high it was obvious no one could reach by normal means. Luckily none of the parents seemed to believe their children. Maybe everyone would assume she'd gotten on a ladder and done it. She certainly hoped so. Dahlia wasn't sure she could lie to her grandparents if they asked her about it. Brushing her bangs out of her face, Dahlia sat down on one of the swings in the playground, pushing off gently with her feet. She'd swing slowly once or twice before giving another push, her enthusiasm lacking. She sat there on the swing with her hands folded in her lap, staring off into the distance as her thoughts wandered. She missed her dad. |
