Duff ran about the crisp midday grass, making chimes of delight as he chased a small group of birds around the park. He had no mind for where he was following them to, or how far away he was wandering from Euan, who sat on a bench near a sidewalk, writing poems in a flimsy old book with yellowed pages. All he thought about was how fun it was to see the birds peck about with normal bird business, then suddenly ruffle up and flap their wings in a flurry of colors, lifting them into the air, where they glided at a low altitude before they found a spot to land a little ways off and mad a smooth landing. Then, the cycle would repeat, the birds being agitated each time by Duff running at them, seeing if he could grab one.
He didn't tire of it, for one reason or another. Perhaps it was because the unusual sensation of the sun on his skin making him jittery. Or perhaps it was because he was fascinated by how the birds so easily lifted themselves into the air when they flapped their wings about. He certainly couldn't do it, even if he did have his own pair of downy wings, currently hidden under his shirt and jacket, which he had reluctantly allowed Euan to pick out for him to wear. It was uncomfortable to have his wings confined under his clothes like that, where he couldn't move them about freely, but Euan was very firm about not allowing him to show his wings in a public place. He didn't mind too much, it was a fine trade-off for being outside.
