Kyle rubbed his eyes. It was three in the morning and what was he doing? Sneaking out into the woods. There's sure to be punishment for him from Madame Minturn. Minturn was his fourth one this year. Fourth nanny and it was only mid-March. The punishment would probably be no dinner meals...no telescope to look at the stars with...completely locked in his room, for it is the fifth time he's escaped from home since last year. It'll be OK. He'd probably sleep the whole day anyway. He'd only gotten four hours of sleep. At the edge of the woods, and the end of their backyard, he stood, a pack of food and extra clothing attached to his back. The trees rustled, greeting him good morning. He yawned his last for the day and took a deep breath. "Good morning Nature. How's the day going?" he mumbled then started jogging on the unseen, much Kyle-ridden path in the woods, patting his favorite trees as he passed them. Hours later, six, in fact, Kyle was sitting thirty feet up on an appendage of the largest tree in the woods, eating a granola bar he had brought along. It was an oak he leaned against that had a radius of twelve feet. Finishing his tart, he swallowed some water from bottle next to him and squeezed it into his pack, then stood up, examining his surroundings. The trees and the tree on which he was standing were so close together; one could lean on a tree and just extend an arm to touch the next. High above, branches were much intertwined with the next that trees looked as if they were hugging. Kyle sniffed and rubbed his nose. It smelled strongly of wet greenery and mud. He carefully jumped to the next branch and the next and the next until he was on the other side of the tree. There, he rediscovered a metal seat safely attached to the branch and a small, hollow, metal table in front of that. He smiled and priggishly sat in the metal chair. "Home at last," he mumbled. He swung his pack on the table and from it, took out several sheets of steel. Today, he would attempt a strong metal and wood ladder. He raised his hand and several branches came without hesitation. He made himself comfortable and started on the ladder, shaping the metals around the wood, smiling happily. It will be many more hours 'til his family finds him. In the woods, hardly anyone comes so far in. No one would see him here to report his powers, and call him a witch and whatnot. |

"He comes to this tree often it seems.' Livia had approached it earlier, with Avon. After only three kidnappings she was thoroughly wiped out, and hoped that Somerled would find some people to help him. She wanted some time to herself, and with the rain time coming, and their supplies low they needed to set out a raid soon. And she barely had anyone to help her. She may just end up having to take a couple watchers to help her. This vagabond type stuff was a lot harder than she'd expected it to be. Looking up at the tree she took note of the metal seat that stood emptily on a high bough of the tree, next to a small table of the same sort of metal. That must be where he sits, she thought. Off in the distance she heard the soft trampling of leaves underfoot as someone approached. Waving to Avon she ducked behind the tree and out of sight. She watched from her hiding place as he jumped from branch to branch, eventually to rest in his seat. He ate a tart and then began building, or something. Livia couldn't quite see through the foliage. But she could tell that she'd found the correct child. The boy had both pulled the branches toward him and wrapped the sheets of metal he'd brought around them. She shifted on her feet to get herself more comfortable in her crouching position before getting up and out of the leaves. "Kyle, could you come down here for a bit?" She asked, in a tired voice, almost kindly, but an impatient soft of feel floated about in it. "I'd like to talk to you about a couple things." She leaned backward dusting her rear of, and tried to get the dirt off her skirts. "I can't really climb up there without an effort, so do me a favor. And Avon, come out of the bush." She eyed the trees and their branches trying to find the safest and quickest route up to Kyle should he not want to come down. They had been warn this kid was to be watched, but it seemed an awkward situation to be watched in, from what she'd heard, he wouldn't want to go home. He sounded a lot like that monkey girl they were gonna get. Sounded like she'd try to leave for the sake of it, like it was a game or something. In wait for him to come down she seated herself on a low enough branch and tried to get comfortable. Crossing her legs she felt the wood under her hands and looked up at Kyle, hopeful that he'd get out of the tree. |

When Kyle heard her voice, his back chilled like heavy ice was just placed on it. He gulped and slowly put his woodwork down on the table, and turned his head just enough to see who it was, holding his bangs as not to get them in the way. A girl and half a person was what he saw. Hopefully she hadn't seen me. Or maybe she had. 'I'd like to talk to you about a couple things.' What the heck. What's there to talk about? And how does she know my name? Slightly frustrated, he pulled his hand through his hair. They was no explanation to this situation. There might be, but there's no time to think. Kyle patted the tree and jumped to the branches below. His legs were cold with nervousness and buckled just as he hit a branch eight feet up. And fell the eight feet down. "Oh, geez," Kyle groaned, stretching and feeling his back for broken ribs. Finding none but a couple of bruises, he scrambled up, embarrassed, and stood in front of the tree, one hand on a low branch in case he needed a fast getaway. "Yeah? Do you want something? I found it first, this tree. You can't have it. How do you know my name? And who's that?" he pointed at Avon. Indeed he felt odd talking to someone his age like this. Normally he'd ignore people, but they found him at his secret place. These weren't like the normal kids he sees daily. Anyway, there's something peculiar about the girl. He's seen her before. Avon detached himself from the bush he had been instructed to hide behind, and jumped up behind Livia and started messaging her shoulders. "You 'kay, Liv? You've done a lot today.... Oh and I'm Avon," he smiled confidently at Kyle, "I'm your watcher!" Slowly, without him noticing, Avon formed a semi-spherical force behind Kyle, still massaging Livia’s shoulders. |

Livia managed to pull the ever happy Avon off her shoulders, "You're not my slave lad, don't worry 'bout me, I'm fine." She watched as Kyle jumped down the branches, eventually to remark about how they probably came to take his tree. His tree, he though they were there for his tree. Amazing. "Great deductive skills, "She remarked sarcastically. "No Kyle, we're here to take you to a new home. I'm pretty sure that Avon here," she said patting the boys back, "has you in one of his force field, so it's not as if you're going anywhere," She paused and looked down at Avon."Right?", she whispered to him. "So far we're not really expecting you to run away, and as Avon said he's you watcher. We've come with a proposition for you. First off, we know about you because we keep an eye on most of the children here in Greave, we find it our job it seems. We're a group of children that have far more in common than you than you think. So it seems, for your safety and our own, especially with your form of power, you're to come an live with us." She gave Kyle a once over, having not been able to see him in his tree, he seemed a common enough kid. "Good god, you dress like I used to. My name is Livia Meiland, and this, as I believe he said, is Avon Reese. You'll get acquainted, he's one of the few children from outside of Greave that we've collected" "Hopefully you can manage to settle yourself at Cathriss. If you have any questions feel free to ask." We may be able to get him to come with us if we don't tell him that he won't be able to return home to live there once he sets foot on Cathriss. I really do hope this is a peaceful collection, I really don't need another fight. She thought as she waited for his reply. "Of course, you'll be free to come back to this tree whenever, we've no reason to take it from you." |

Avon was pushed away by her much adored rescuer. When asked the question, he beamed back at Livia, whispering to her ear, "Of course!” Kyle's head began to hurt and his legs jellified. "E-excuse me? What are you talking about? What force field? Come live with you? What? Like the metal and the thing that's wrong with my hands that bring things to me?" Kyle was confused. Suddenly the sounds of the woods amplified. The soft rustle of leaves was louder and closer, the chirping of birds and squeaking of our small animals sounded as if there were a hundred at his feet, and as far as he knows, there was a snake hissing beside his ear. Nothing like these were happening of course, but nonetheless, he took a step back and tripped, feeling the force field first rate with his head, making his head ache worse. There are people like me? I don’t have to live with those people I call family anymore? he thought as he went down. |

"On thing at a time.", She took a deep breath, getting ready for the usual synopsis. "We live in a Manor off in the woods where children like you, me and Avon here reside." To illustrate the likeness, in a way that Avon could not, she grew about 5 inches shorter, and grew into a hunched over sort of gremlin. Not much changed, but her hair turned a muddy brown and her hards became bulky and clawed. her face and voice, as usual remained the same, "You see, Avon here can keep you in a forcefield, as I'm sure you've just realized." She kept talking as she watched him stagger, having hit his head on the field. Then he fell and realizing this Livia took the opportunity to change back. Her hands got a little smoother and her back straightened out, but before she managed to get her hands back to normal and her hair back to it's color she began to feel faint. Going over to a branch she could sit on she let it support her. "Now seriously," She was more than winded and spoke softer and with more breaks for breathing than before, " that notion of yours that your power is something wrong with you has got to go. Where would we all be if everyone behaved like a hypochondriac? Anyways, If you have questions, don't be scared to ask, and we'll leave as soon as I can get myself fixed up." |

"Ooh, you okays, Liv?" Avon looked up at Livia whose hair leisurely turned its normal color. He had been going through Kyle's pack which had fallen in the manner of the boy's jump down from the tree. Inside he found many odd things, some of which, fortunately, were food. Avon proudly took out a green apple and presented it to Livia. "Here, eat this. When was the last time you ate? You must be starving!" With his head ringing, Kyle scooted up to an odd sitting position, his left leg under him with his foot sticking out the side, and his right leg bent in front of his chest like a shield from the girl’s evildoings, against the force field. What the hell was that?! She’s a monster! Kyle stared at Livia. But then aren‘t I, too, a monster, if I am capable of manipulating something as hard as steel? His ache had abated some when he took the upright position and the sounds had lessened, too. “A home with people like me. Friends, maybe? And no more of anyone’s demands. A home. Home. With powers…” dreamily, he wondered out loud. In the middle of his thinking, there was a sharp tick. Yes, a home, Kyle. So are you accepting…or what? his mind spoke. Then with it a contradicting side awoke, But what about your life? You have everything! You ask for something and you get it! Life’s so easy at home. You’re rich! Rich! So what if there are no other mutants there? But Kyle is lonely. He doesn’t like how his life was at that moment. He craved for the missing part in his heart, people like him. He wanted to talk to other mutants and show off his powers freely. He wanted the life that girl was offering him, he wanted a change. “Yes…” he said slowly, “I would like to come with you. Yes, I do. But… what’s it like there? The surroundings, lifestyle, the food, the clothing? Do we have school? Are we free? Do we--.” His left leg buckled and he fell back, hitting his head again on the force field, which made a cracking sound. Avon, upon hearing it crack, bit his lip and struggled to see where his feild had fractured. "...get to spend time outside...?" Kyle blinked off the pain and squinted at Livia, who had blurred for some reason. He, however stayed the position he was in, left leg under, right laid in front, and head and upper back against the feild and the rest slouched uncomfortably on the floor. |

Livia smiled sweetly, "Thank you, laddie." She took the apple gingerly from his hand. Her hands were slowly changing back to their usual forms, her hair had already regained color. I bet I could poke fun at this kid ten ways from Sunday, and he's still smile. Although It's kinda nice once you think about it. She glanced over at Kyle, all a-mess in his forcefield. "I haven't eaten since breakfast, and I'm sure I missed last breakfast. You wouldn't mind if I ate your apple would you Kyle? " awry smile rose on her face, "We'll get you a good apple or something when we get home, Veran's a good cook, he'll feed you." Not waiting fro his answer she bit down into the juicy apple. "Avon, just remember, it's rude to go through people's things, you know the Manor would punish you for it. especially if you took something." Finishing off the apple, and eating the core as well, she threw the clean stem on the ground to decompose. She stood up slowly as a little of her strength came back to her, and her hands finally regained normality. "I'm going to have Avon take the forcefield off of you," She told Kyle, giving Avon a side glance and a nod. "Don't try to run away, or I'll have him put another one on you, and we'll just roll you home. So sorry it's abrupt but you really will be coming with us. We won't hurt you." She dusted off her dress, and stood herself upright again. "We don't live as well as you, but we live with friends. The food is warm and the beds are good. You'll be safe. And you'll be able to move around freely on the ground, even about town provided you keep yourself hidden from people who knew you, and that Avon accompanies you." She bit her lip when she heard him asking about freedom, she supposed that what they had could be called freedom, but others didn't think so. She kept her beak shut. She watched as he hit his head on the forcefield. "Oi, Avon help me out a bit. I'm going to carry the lad back, I've enough strength.", She peeled a strip off her dress, which settled it's self back to normal afterwards. "Tie this around his head were he hit it, just in case. I don't really know much about this sort of thing, but we'll take him to Veran if he doesn't get himself together by the time we get back." Not waiting for any protests from the boy, Livia leaned over and picked him up. "Least he's not that heavy," She leaned down a little letting Avon tie the bandage around his neck. "Alright, lets go, hopefully he orders me to put him down soon." |

Avon looked down shamefacedly. “I’m sorry, Livia. I’m so used to taking…” he mumbled, “And I’m still not used to you and Veran and Somerled giving me food and clothing and stuff.” He then turned to Kyle, “I apologize for taking your stuff, Kyle.” As would have predicted, he was back to his blithe attitude in an instant. And as ordered, he immediately dropped his field which caused kyle’s head to make a soft thud on the dirt, “Oops.” Bouncing over, seeming not to hear the thud, he wrapped the piece of Livia’s dress around his neck. Kyle’s pain wavered. He heard the answers vaguely. He’ll need to ask again later. "Hey!" he screamed in objection when he felt Livia lift him. He hated heights and also not knowing what was happening, the exact circumstances he was in, but his pain became so great that his body insisted he close his eyes and set his mind off anything that isn‘t himself. Your mind is top priority, it demanded, no world is more important than you. He fought his hardest but only came in and out of consciousness every few minutes, and all in all, only heard the crunching of leaves, Avon‘s laughter and Livia‘s grunts. More than twenty minutes must have passed before Kyle’s attention was again on the outside and not his body. He stared blankly at the moving ground and Livia’s back side. What the hell…? he thought, his mind still muddled from the hits he took on the field. Three or more seconds later, he remembered that Livia was carrying him to some Manor. The Manor. Freedom. But even this did not eradicate his hate of heights. ”Hey…hey put me down. Put me down!” he cried in panic, "The ground’s falling! I’ll die! Die!” His fright of being off that beloved ground might just have killed his mentality if not for Avon. Skipping along, Avon stared at him, an amused expression twinkled in his eyes. This threw him off. He scowled at the boy. |

"That's fine just keep it in mind, okay?" She smiled and shifted Kyle's position on her back. He wasn't heavy, just a burden. He was her age, she remembered Somerled telling her. She flinched when Kyle had shouted up after she'd picked him up. He soon quiet4d down and she got a bit of peace."We're not just giving you stuff, we're a family, remember that, laddie. It's the rule, we have to work together." Her behavior around the little Avon really did show a softer side of her, although it may have also been the sleep and food depravity. But she did have a compassionate view toward the members of the Manor. "We'll get home, and we'll eat, and I'll sleep." She thought about her couch in the parlor and deeply wished that she was there sleeping and not on the trail carrying another spoiled child. I should count my blessings, she though, at least this one seems much more willing to come to the manor, and in the end much less of a hassle. He doesn't weigh much, and my tired head can't do with so much screaming. They kept walking, chatting a little, resting a little. The boy began to wake up, and the first thing she heard was his incessant need to regain his connection with the ground. "What's this, one foot off the ground and you go all sour on me. Fine, " Livia lowered him down to the ground and without hesitation grabbed his arm and continued walking. "We're getting home before I collapse, and please, I beg of you," She glared at him, showing that the begging was not common place for her, "don't put up a crazy fight. We're not here to hurt you. Really." She tried to emphasize how his previous fall had been accidental. |

Kyle grimaced, feeling pain in his bottom and lower back, when Livia dropped him. Now, everything except his legs hurt, either from the falls, lack of sleep or use of powers. He squeaked when she grabbed his arm and stood up quickly for Livia started walking again. Livia’s grip loosened enough to let his blood circulate, but still tight as so he couldn’t escape. Kyle nodded to say that he’d rather not fight, too. Who wouldn’t want freedom? “I’m sorry,” he mumbled, not knowing what else to say. No, perhaps not you, he thought, but that physic kid seems to be. I don’t trust him. Avon grinned at Kyle. Livia had taken his right arm so Kyle walked in her left side, which was the same side of her that Avon frolicked in. Kyle’s body language said enough to know that he liked Avon much less than Avon had intended. It couldn’t be helped that Kyle was such a weak person. I guess I got added in his list of people to ignore, Avon thought as birdsong sounded overhead. He tossed Kyle his pack, which he had been holding because he didn’t think Kyle would like it if he left it by the tree. Kyle caught it and gave Avon a deathly look in return. Avon smiled back, teeth showing, glinting even in the trees’ shadows. Soon a treeless area with a small pond and a patch of raspberry bushes appeared to their right. Avon stopped and turned to inspect it. The pond seemed not to be poisoned and both looked undisturbed. He jogged to Livia who didn’t look like she had noticed it, and grabbed her shoulder. “Hey, Liv! I remembered the walk to Kyle’s tree took lotsa time. And I don’t think that apple will last you so many hours of walking. We should stop and eat over there by the pond thing, and then you and Kyle can sleep. You two look like zombies! I think I‘m the only one who has energy to walk another hour.” He grinned at Livia, pointing back at the water. |

"Of course it took forever with you dilly dallying all over the place, " She joked. "We'll be there in at most two hours. But I wouldn't mind stopping, those raspberries look good." She let go of Kyle's hand, almost as much an ac of good faith and so as not having to drag him to get the berries, She went to the bushes and picked a few, which sometimes burst into a messy splash in her hands. After getting a sufficient amount of those that hadn't burst and placing them on a strip of fabric she again took from her dress, she went to wash her hands. The water was cool and refreshing and she took a drink. Sitting on a stone next to her set out raspberries she began to eat them. "Great that you spotted this bush, the apple and raspberries will probably stave off some hunger. And Kyle, any questions you want to ask it's probably a good time." This is exactly what she'd been needing, a little time to sit down. Each child she;d been sent after so far had been temperamental and ready to try to best her till she proved she couldn't be. A little breeze was weaving through the leaves up top, and it was quiet. Fr a little the most she'd have to do was eat and talk. Her legs beat from the walking and her head felt a little woozy. But the raspberries numbed it down a little. |

Avon ran after Livia to the bushes. Seeing how she had used part of her skirt to hold her raspberries, he tore off he’s right pant leg and since the leg was circular and one, he tore through it. For no reason, he tore it in half again and dropped a half on the ground. “How did the other missions go? Other than tiring,” he asked as he cupped the half he had and started putting berries on it, greeting each one. Stopping, with almost all of the berries squashed, unwhole and oozing juice, he picked up the cloth he had dropped, and walked over and placed the mess of berries on the cloth near where Livia sat. He took off his shoes and socks, and hopped into the river. With the water almost to his knees, he washed his hands and walked contentedly to his berries. Not minding that his feet were muddy, he sat and started eating his berries in handfuls, standing to replenish his carrier of berries. Realizing that he looked rather silly with only one pant leg, he tore off the left one and threw it at Kyle. Kyle isn't a bad person, be sure is he a snob! Avon thought, with how I've been acting, it'll be long 'til I get his respect.... Oh well. And thinking no more, he smiled happily at the sounds of the animals in the woods. Kyle rubbed his arm sulkily and walked to the bushes shortly after Avon finished picking and went to Livia. He had been staring stupidly and feebly at the berries knowing not what to put them in when something rough hit his arm. “What the—.“ He turned to see Avon smiling at him innocently, pointing to a denim cloth at his foot. Kyle scowled in reply but picked up the cloth and discovered for himself the ways of bagging berries, and picked them gingerly. His berries weren’t as crushed as Avon’s but he still eyed them as if they were sickening. Nevertheless, he walked away from the bushes with them in his hand and dropped them near his companions, and went to the pond thing and washed his hands. As he sat next to his berries, he became conscious that he should have washed them before picking berries. He shrugged and ate the raspberries in pinches. "So, what's the Manor like?" He vaguely remembers asking this question before. |

"You'd better like your pants like that Avon," Livia pointed out. "Veran's not going to fix them for you, and they're not mine so I can't fix them easily." She finished her raspberries, sucking out the juices and the crunching down on the seeds. Her lips were tinted red from the juice. Picking up the slightly tinted cloth she got up and gave it a quick rise, twisting it to get as much water as she could out of it, before integrating it back into her dress. The color slowly change back to the same color as her dress, and all that was left of the patch was the darkness that it being wet. She sat back down, letting the sunlight coming through the leaves warm her. Relaxing onto her back she answered Kyle's question. "Cathriss Gate, is a manor in these woods. It's home to us kids, keeps us safe, gives us shelter. All the children living there are like us with supernatural abilities. People who aren't like us, disappear when coming on the manor grounds. We usually say the manor ate them, but we get a few crazies coming back to town who talk about being taken to foreign countries while in the forest. Most of the children stay inside the house, and live contently. We have a couple who opt to help out though, we need children to help raid the nearby stores for food and supplies and to gather the other children we find in town. Aside from that we feed you, there a places for you to sleep, and people around to take care for you. It's a nice place. Now finish eating your berries, we've got a little bit more to go." |

Avon finished his last batch of berries and decided that he was full. He then washed his cloths in the river, squeezed them, extracting most of the water that stuck to them, and stuffed them in his pockets. He didn’t want to litter. Avon looked down on his legs, "Ahh.... It's OK; I don't mind my legs feeling colder than the rest of my body." He smiled at Livia. "Oh, and, Kyle and I will help!" Kyle, too, was finishing eating his berries as Livia explained about Cathriss Gate. He understood up to the part where people disappear. “Wait, wait. People just disappear? Like, when someone looks straight at them and they happen to cross the border, they’re just suddenly not there? Not even the people in the manor see them?” he paused, “They think of the Manor as a foreign country?” Kyle paused again. He couldn’t seem to find any more berries. He looked at his hand, red with berry juice and empty. He had somehow turned over his cloth, resulting with the rest of his berries in contact with dirt. Not that he cared, he didn’t many more berries to eat. “We have to steal food?” |
