Open to one character

A perfect night for exploring, or potentially trespassing. Kuristoph did not know if this land was owned by anyone in particular, but the man he paid to fly him here on a personal aircraft didn't seem to object. It could just be that the man was simply overpaid since Kuristoph didn't quite have a baring on what was a fair rate for services yet. Still, once he saw this particular skyland on his airship ride to Earthstar he had to come.

It had the most beautiful lake that looked so tranquil and peaceful to him. Plus it was abandoned as far as he could tell. It would be the perfect place for him to swim without disturbing anyone.

"Thank you Pim for this blessing," Kuristoph muttered to himself whilst floating on his back in the water. The fact that he is not wearing any clothes, as most Nokken would while in the water, is the main reason he sought this place out.

The other reason was to find a place he was sure not to find another Nokken. Just better to avoid running into anyone he once knew.

"It was rough, I had known very little Humanish from the education I receive back home. But it was not enough when I ran across people who spoke it fluently for the first time. Especially since what I was taught was proper Humanish and admittedly... quite dated," Kuristoph explained part of his troubles. While he understood many of the basics of the language structure at the start of his exile, it almost felt like every Human was speaking a different version of the basics he was taught.

"If I had to pick a favorite thing... it would be seeing how each culture treats water in general. Each one has a different appreciation for it in a different way. To Humans it seems more of a luxury than for others. You have to pay for drink it, pay to bathe in it, and pay to really get access to more than a cups full. It's really the only thing that ties my home to the other cultures and it is interesting to see how it has influenced all of them in different ways," Kuristoph rambled, admitting that his favorite thing about the surface is... something that reminded him of home.

It was sad in a way.

"What of you? What are some of your favorite things... just in general?" he inquired with an incredibly broad question.

Kuristoph admitted it had been difficult, and that at first the way he had learned Humanish was dated, which made Angeles smirk, but eventually he overcame the hurdles.

He then moved on to reveal that his favorite thing was to learn about other people's relationship with water. Admitting that the idea of people having to pay for the consumption and use of water fascinated him. Ne could understand on some level. It would be like going underwater and selling air.

Ne chuckled, "for us flying creatures," ne said, indicating Ekahu and Valkyrie, "water really holds little significance to us than as for drinking and gathering fish. Because we fly we never had the idea to tame it like humans and obagr did," ne hummed. It was a very interesting thing to think about, something that likely would never have crossed nir mind if ne had never spoken to Kuristoph. How funny some things like that went so unnoticed.

Kuristoph distracted nem a bit, though, asking a... very broad question that caused Angeles to laugh.

"Oh," ne began and nir mind raced to try to categorize and order things well enough to list them, "well, I love make up," ne started with, "and facial paint and body ornaments. Things that beautify and are masculine--," ne paused, "well, are masculine in the cultures of Hakert, I learned recently that to color oneself and decorate with jewelry is considered feminine in most other cultures of the world. Is it the same for nokken?" ne quirked an eyebrow at Kuristoph, "but I do love the work and effort and care it takes to make oneself beautiful. I think the body is one of the best canvases to express the most personal of arts where your greatest show of self expression can be presented for all to see."

Ne smiled, the passion of this topic welled within nir body. Ne took one look at Kuristoph, and let out a defeated laugh, "though some it seems are just that beautiful naturally."

"To be honest, that part of other cultures is interesting as well. It's so alien to my culture since for the most part Nokken do not wear clothing. Some decorate themselves to be flashy, but it is not bound to one gender or another. However the beauty standard changes from culture to culture. For example, my people specifically are more kin to Rivers and look much different from Nokkens who live deep at the bottom of the Ocean. So we naturally have a different concept of beauty than they do," Kuristoph explained, likely saying more than he should.

But he felt safe to do so.

"My people specifically have more surface influences and tend to be attracted to people who have taken part of surface culture into their appearance. Being in mostly shallow waters we tend to have more liberties with decoration. But makeup is something very alien to us. Likely since it wouldn't hold up in water. Although some of my kin are born with some very beautiful colors that resemble makeup in Humanish culture. I was only born with yellow and am thus not very attractive compared to others," Kuristoph admitted after a long explination.

"I probably said too much... but I don't think you'll tell," he said after looking away at the water, feeling somewhat guilty that he said as much as he did. But he was just enjoying their talk so much and felt bad that ne was giving him more information than he was giving ner.

Kuristoph revealed that in nokken culture decorations and even clothing was merely to be flashy. But as ne thought about it, it made sense that such articles would have no practicality when one spent their life swimming in the deepest reaches of the ocean. So, too, would makeup and paint have no real purpose as the life of such decoration would be very short before the water washed it away.

He revealed that, like Ekahu, Valkyrie and Ouriss, there were those who were born with brilliant sprays of color which resembled makeup in a way. Much like Kuristoph's scales, Angeles mused.

As if on the same pattern of thought, Kuristoph admitted that he was not considered very beautiful by his people for having only been born with yellow color. Angeles barely heard his quick regret of revealing too much and the trust that ne would not tell anyone, and watched him look away into the water.

Nir jaw had dropped at the notion that Kuristoph was considered unattractive by his people's standards. Despite being a tad on the thing side he would be the epitome of masculine beauty if he was put among Valkyrie. Ne would know. Ne was sitting right there.

"I think you're beautiful," Angeles said simply as fact, "you would put many males of my people to shame just as you are now, unaltered and undecorated. Many would be very envious of you, I am," ne admitted with a smirk to try to wave away any guilt he may have of nir emotions.

"It's not true though," ne said, reaching forward to point at the arch of his brown without touching him, "you see here," ne indicated making a sweeping motion with nir hand, gesturing a curve that moved along the flow of his brow, "your scales here are blue, and here where they meet with the scales that are yellow, the colors compliment each other causing each color in turn to stand out billiantly," ne smiled, "your eyes, also, are blue, like the the color of the ocean near the shore where the water is clean."

Ne smirked, "so it seems you can't see blue. But I assure you it's there, and you are beautiful."

"Thank you, that's very reassuring to hear that at the very least I am seen in a different light by the people I will be spending the rest of my life with now," Kuristoph said earnestly. He began to ponder if the opinions of Nokken he'd very likely never see again mattered anymore. What they found attractive and pleasant to the eye no longer mattered. He was within a new culture now and according to Angeles he would cause great envy among her people. Ne even admitted to being envious of him.

"I wish knowing that there was blue meant something... but to be told that my eyes are the same color as the ocean gives me great solace," he spoke with a small boost of confidence. "But I must ask... why are you envious?" he inquired with a concerned expression dawning on his face. "I think you are quite beautiful as you are and in truth, I envy you in some ways as well. Your wings for example look to give you the freedoms on the surface I once had in the water," he explained, expressing that he should be the one envious of nem rather than the other way around.

The envy Angeles expressed was perplexing to Kuristoph. Almost especially since he was the one who envied nem.

Kuristoph thanked nem for nir compliment, admitting that while he still didn't know what 'blue' was, (and ne knew he never would) that ne had compared the color to the ocean was a comfort to him.

Ne smiled.

The smile turned to a surprised frown when he in turn said he was envious of nem, and didn't understand why ne felt that way about him. He mentioned nir wings and ne chuckled. Nir wings were often the source of people's envy, whether it was those who did not have wings wishing to even just possess them, to those who did, who were envious of the pattern. His envy was for a different reason, though perhaps a similar one to the former.

Ne chuckled before answering his question, "I'm envious because it would take me at least an hour to paint colors on myself to match the inspirational splendor that you were born with in your scales. You are...," ne paused to try to explain, "so naturally beautiful that I feel less masculine in your presence. Like that I would never be able to reach the level of man that you are if I spent days of preparation and decorating myself," ne smiled, "I would lose every challenge of courtship, if ever you felt the desire to have such a challenge."

Masculine...? Man... Oh. I thought... Kuristoph thought to himself, his eyes opening in shock to his new revelation. His expression slowly changed from surprise to confusion as he carelessly began to eye at Angeles' body for a second before trying to remember when ne had originally de-robed.

"I am sorry, I had believed you to be a woman this entire time. I had no idea you were a man. I apologize for that mistake," Kuristoph expressed with a bowed head, blushing from shame that he had mistaken his gender. "I should have said you were handsome instead of beautiful. I know humanish is very specific on those things. I didn't mean to offend," he added, feeling like he may had hurt Angeles' feelings without it being made obvious.

Kuristoph assumed that Angeles was either used to being mistaken as female or hid their offense very well.

Regardless Kuristoph felt horrible for his transgression and felt the need to make it up to him.

Kuristoph issued an apology and it confused Angeles for a moment. He clarified quickly after and it made sense to nem, and ne knew that ne was going to have to word things carefully so as not to further complicate it.

Usually though, ne was actually more used to being mistaken for a man than as a woman, the lack of breasts being the usual culprit.

"You didn't offend," Angeles said quickly when there was a break in the nokken's apology. Ne said it, maybe a bit too quickly and ne sighed to gather nir thoughts, running a hand through nir hair, "you're not mistaken... I'm not a man, but... I'm not a woman either," ne glanced at Kuristoph, hoping ne hadn't lost him already at this point.

"I was born... both... and so in a way neither. So whether you think of me as male or female, you're correct. I don't personally... know myself which one I feel more like?" ne offered in explanation, "so being 'mistaken' one way or the other isn't an offense. It's too much pointless work and wasted energy to be upset at someone for how they perceive me. I'm.... complicated," she finished with a sigh, looking at the water again.

"I'm sorry to have confused you. Handsome and beautiful mean the same to me either way. I do appreciate the compliment."

"Both then...?" he questioned while looking back up to Angeles to confirm that he heard correctly by reading her face. He pondered on the information for a moment before his expression changed to that of excitement. "Oh, so you have been blessed by Nothandu then," Kuristoph said with enthusiasm. "You are like the Anemone or Cuttlefish. You are able to adapt to being whatever is needed in the moment. Adapting to the situation and flowing like water through the world, never bound to the limitations others are," Kuristoph continued, moving both of his hands below his chin, one on top of the other parallel to the ground.

He stopped speaking for a moment and began to speak in Nokken tongue in a short prayer.

"You are very special indeed," Kuristoph spoke again, lifting up from his prayer to meet Angeles's eyes to see if ne were as excited as he was. In truth, Angeles still looked female to Kuristoph. Female Nokken weren't known for having large breasts if any at all. This was especially true for his specific ethnic group of Nokken due to being closer to the surface than others.

Angeles couldn't help but give a bittersweet smile to Kuristoph calling nem 'blessed,' and remained silent when he likened nem to various sea creatures that could shift between genders as was needed. That was not a choice ne had, and there was a very important factor in the life of those animals that ne would never be able to have.

Still ne stayed respectfully silent while Kuristoph spoke of his goddess and called nem special. When he looked at nem with a gleam in his eye, ne almost didn't want to say anything, but he seemed to have a misunderstanding of nir situation.

"Except...," ne began slowly, fighting down the painful feelings welling up and remaining calm, and still somehow with a smile, "I... can't have children."

Angeles looked at Kuristoph, giving an apologetic smile for ruining something he thought had been grand, "it's a disability... not an adaptation. My... reproductive organs never developed properly one way or another. As a man I can't... how to say," ne hummed, certain that Kuristoph would not yet be aware of either the more scientific or vulgar terms for sperm, so attempted what ne guessed would be a term he would have possibly heard as slang, "I don't have seed to give to a woman. And as a woman I don't have a womb to carry a child."

Ne looked down at nir abdomen, the most offended area of nir condition and shook nir head, "it was a source of great shame to my family, this fact, continuing the line is very important to my people. It's why I was disowned and adopted instead by Ekahu," ne tried to remain objective about these facts and not let nir emotion on the subject taint it. Ne hoped ne had done well enough in that regard. It was honestly not the state of being 'both' that bothered nem, it was that ne would never be able to fulfill life's greatest purpose that the gods had given to nem.
