Welcome to Survivor: League of Legends!

This is your Confessional. It is visible only to you, the moderators, and an assembly of Spectators, who will be spectating from afar. Please use this forum as you see fit — as a means of venting, organizing your thoughts, compiling PM logs, etc. Occasionally, the moderating team and Trainers will provide questions to spur conversation, so answer those as truthfully as you can.

Remember that posting content in your confessional will earn you gold for the shop, so post often! Be sure to read all of the rules, just to make yourself familiar with them!

She was so OTTM. It was actually super amazing how OTTM she was the entire way through.

Also I realized this morning on the way to work that I now understand how Tocantins happened b/c of Survivor Meet, which is kind of a cool epiphany.

Basically, I was reflecting on this on the way to work today:

JT won Tocantins by basically making a bunch of other people in the game want him to win to the point that they were willing to damage their game to work with JT. That always struck me as really weird. You're playing Survivor - you're in it to win for yourself. Obviously, "altruistic" characteristics like loyalty and "not lying to everyone about everything" are valuable because of how trust is a currency in this game, but at the end of the day, I've always played only for myself. If it was expedient to drop an ally, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Loyalty only extended as far as someone was actually useful to me, either as a number or as a jury vote. My first few games, I played like Todd. Then I tried to adopt a more Sandra-esque playstyle for a while, but I've come to realize that it's just not something I can execute because of who I am fundamentally as a person.

I played that way across a bunch of f2f and f2f/online hybrid games. Even when I was playing with the guy I was dating, I felt that way, and was more than willing to not work with him or backstab him to further my own game. It never made sense to me that you could want someone else to win.

Then I think about my play at Survivor Meet, and how radically different it was from that. Like, I didn't really play that game for me to get to the end, I played it for us to get to the end (us being me and Brian). Like, there were a lot of good strategic reasons to align with him at the start, but none of those reasons made it necessarily make sense to want to go to the end with him. There were plenty of people I could more easily have beaten in an FTC, but I didn't really care; I'd have rather taken the risk of losing vs. Brian than an easier win vs. someone else for the sake of my own personal satisfaction. There was a pretty heavy degree to which I would have sabotaged my own game out of misguided loyalty, even.

JT found a way to make this happen with, like, most of the Tocantins post-merge. I think it's something that a lot of people aren't really capable of cultivating naturally, and a certain type of person is more likely to end up letting it happen to them. Tocantins had someone who had a massive amount of natural magnetism (JT), and a lot of people who were naturally susceptible to it (Brendan, Coach, Debbie, maybe Taj).

I would also guess that people who go to Dartmouth are generally more likely to fall into that second group, because I'd assume that psychologically it matches a lot of the profile that Dartmouth recruits for (in particular, strong in-group bias).
