I have decided to do some custom particle testing for a game currently under development. The only problem is I do not know which particle effects work best on most computers as I only have a high-endish and crap computer! So this is where you come in. I wish to know the general FPS rate you get from certain particle effects -- variations of two different ones. DOWNLOAD This was made with Game Maker 8 Pro. The controls are: (all on the top (horizontal) numbers) 1 - Max quality Water Spurt Effect 2 - Max quality Water Explosion Effect 3 - Medium Water Spurt Effect 4 - Medium Water Explosion Effect 5 - Low Water Spurt Effect 6 - Low Water Explosion Effect Backspace - Destroy all particles, on and off screen. F4 - Fullscreen Escape - End programme The number at the top left once you've begun is the FPS, the number to the top-middleish-right is the number of particles on and off screen. (The particles are still active off-screen for easier FPS checking) The things I would like to know are: - What FPS do you get for each of the particle effects? - How many of the specified effects (or particle numbers) can your computer handle until the FPS drops below 50? If you could also post your computer's specs and what else you were running at the same time (if anything), that would also prove very useful. The graphics are not meant to be eye-candy as this is merely an FPS test. I will also clean-up and make the effects look better later on. Thank you very much for your help! Sorry I can't help with this, I've got a fairly high end computer.

the computer i'm currently on is pretty mediocre. When I use small amounts of particles (high-end or not) I get 60 FPS. The frame rate slows as particles fill the screen. More low-end particles are required for 20-40 FPS than high-end particles. |

Would you happen to know the number of particles when the slowdown occurs? I'd wish to know as to see how many effects your computer can handle at once at the very max. Thank you for your feedback -- it's great to know that the max quality effects work for a little while on low-end computers. @ Katana: Oh well, at least you wanted to help. ![]() EDIT: I just realised there was a slight error in the max-level explosion effect; I was using the wrong sprite for the normal water particles... It should be fixed now, however. My apologies for any inconvenience. Edited by Espejo, Jul 13 2011, 01:15 AM.

1500-2000 for high-quality particles, 2000-3000 for low-quality particles EDIT: maybe Edited by Masquerade, Jul 13 2011, 01:13 AM.

Ah, thank you very much~ Also, fyi, the fix won't change much fps rate if at all any; so if you've tried it beforehand, don't bother redoing it. |
