![]() Christabel Backer and Matthias Harkonnen "Gods, why do I feel that I'm being called into the Head Mistresses office" Christabel complained as her husband and her walked across the lawn of Chapterhouse, the headquaters of the nations influential Bene Gesserit faith. They had been summoned by the Reverened Mother herself and that was no small thing. As usual Matthias was trudging behind, the effort of leaving the family estate clearly one he wished he hadn't had to make. He'd not even dressed for the occasion and was still wearing his jeans and a scruffy sweater. They were ushered through to the Reverned Mother's office by two uniformed guards who were part of the Truthsayers, the Sisterhoods military wing. Both stood stock still as Christabel passed but smartly stood to attention as Matthias passed, after all he was of the Holy Houses. The pair sat in stoney silence for a good five minutes before the Reverned Mother arrived, she was wearing her green dress, her red hair piled on top of her head, she looked stern, this probably meant that this was not some social visit. She sat down and looked at each of them for a moment. "How are we Christabel?" she asked out of the blue. "I'm good Reverned Mother" she replied almost startled that she'd been spoken to first. "Not with child?" there was not waiting around with the lady. "No Ma'am" Christabel replied, chance would have been a fine thing, truth be told Matthias hadn't made love to her in three months now, he seemed more interested in video games, football on TV and sailing. Theirs was not a happy marriage, but Christabel was the dutiful wife after all she'd been brought up believing that to serve the Harkonnen was a noble duty that would please the Gods. She'd been thrilled when she'd been selected to marry Matthias, he was after all a handsome young man, but the thrill had soon gone when he seemed almost disappointed in his bride. "And why is that?" she demanded, the couple looked at each other for a moment, the hesitation further displeasing the Reverned Mother who now stood stalking around her desk. "I picked you as a match for each other. You are, in the eyes of the Gods, well suited. That makes it your duty to marry and raise childen, and you are failing to do that. I do not appreicate failure." she was stood directly in front of the couple now. "Matthias, please explain, tell me how in eleven years of marriage you have failed to conceive a child?" Matthias just sat open mouthed not sure what to say. "I assume you are fully functioning?" Matthias blushed as Christabel almost burst out laughing. "No...I mean, yes......I mean I can concieve" Matthias tried to explain feeling his cheeks burn even brighter. "And you, Christabel, you can produce a child?" "Yes, Reverned Mother" she said confidently. "I am certain of it, it's just....." "I find you both unworthy to belong to the House Harkonnen" She turned her back and began walking back to her desk. "I do not care nor expect you to love each other. Tragedy and chaos stalks this world and we require the Kwisatz Haderach to ward this off, that is your sole reason to exist." she pointed to Matthias, "Your sole duty" the finger snapped towards Christabel, "Is to aid him." she sat silently for a moment. "Should you not conceive within the next year without good reason I shall be forced to take action. Christabel you will if unsuccessful be banished from Kaitaine, your name and honours stripped. You Matthias will forfit your right to be a Harkonnen, you will never re-marry and you will die alone." The two of them looked at each other, it was for a Kiatainite the ultimate punishment, to lose your name, especially one of the Holy House. "Do you understand me" her voice took on an even more menacing tone. "Do I make myself clear." "Yes Ma'am" the pair said in unison as with a wave of her hand they were dismissed. Christabel felt a panic set in, nine years and they'd hadn't conceived and now 12 months or she was all but dead in the eyes of her people, Matthias on the other hand could see his life of ease fading, he had imagined once he knew why he was here he'd be granted a concubine, one of the beauties of the Honored Matres, it wasn't fair after all Niklaus Corrino had two of them. Matthias sulked all the way back to their waiting car. "What are we going to do?" Matthias said as he stirred out of his window. "I guess we both know, unless you didn't pay attention in biology" Christabel said coldly, even the thought of them having sex repulsed her but now she had no choice, she reached a hand over and placed it on his leg. "We should start tonight" she said feeling her stomach turn. |

Duchess Agatha tried to get some sleep, as usual out in Seitch it was warm, the open desert lay just beyond the compound and its heat radiated into the room. It wasn't however the warmth that was keeping her awake, it was a combination of the king size bed all to herself and the sound from next door. For the third night running Duke Niklaus had forsaken her bed for that of his youngest concubine, the Honored Matres Nivedan, Agatha could here her moaning and calling out Niklaus name as they made love. Agatha was convinced Nivedan did it on purpose knowing how it made her jealous. She knew it was expected as a Duchess that her duty was to make her husband happy, and she knew she could do that, she was madly in love with Niklaus and would have done anything he wanted, but she couldn't blame him for his lust for Nivedan , she was young, beautiful and equally as dutiful as Agatha, beside Niklaus had a divine duty to father as many children as possible, just Agatha wished it was with her, they already had three children but she was only just 32 years old and knew they could have more, if she could just keep him in her bed rather than Nivedan's. Ten minutes later and the noise still hadn't subsided, Agatha couldn't take much more and pulled on the silk robe she kept by the bed, she headed for the door of her room and as she grabbed the door handle heard boots shuffle on sandstone floors outside. "Ma'am" a voice said as a young corporal stood to attention. "Shh....no need to do that at night James" she whispered to the youngster, she made it her duty to know the names of all the families guards, after all if they were willing to die to protect you then at least you could recall their names. She turned and walked past Nivedan's room, it was right next to hers and a 2nd guard, a tall man called William stood guard, he came to attention as the Duchess passed, clearly embarrassed by the noises coming from the room he was guarding. She walked the length of the corridor that contained the quarters of the family and descended three flights of stairs to enter the basement kitchen. It was large, capable of preparing feasts for up to three hundred people but right now it was devoid of life. She crossed to the large fridge freezer, she knew their cook, Shadet Mapes, always left some food for the family once she was off duty, the snacks though were not why she was here. She opened the freezer compartment and then reeled back in horror, the ice cream was gone. "Looking for this" A voice in the darkness said making Agatha jump almost out of her skin. She let her eyes adjust for a moment before relaxing as she spotted Nicole Dunst, her husbands other concubine sat in her underwear eating ice cream. "Yes" Agatha said with a smile, she liked Nicole, she may have been competition, so to speak, but she never tried to intervene with things between the Duke and Duchess, she got on with the business of raising her son George and going to Niklaus bed whenever he requested. Nicole motioned for Agatha to join her holding up a second spoon. "Let me guess, Niklaus and Niveden." she handed the spoon over and slid the tub across as the Duchess sat down. Agatha smiled and nodded as she scooped a giant spoonful up. "Yeah, I figure your right next door, at least I get a rooms grace." Nicole said now digging her own scoop, she had the room the opposite side of the Duke and Duchesses room but with everyone having their balcony doors open the sound had travelled. "You know I wouldn't mind but she doesn't know her place, we're concubines, there for his pleasure and to make babies, we'll never replace you." Nicole spelt it out, as a Honored Matres they were taught that they would be objects to the men they served, to not expect love but a life of duty, dedicated to the family they served and the children they bore. The pair sat chatting for an hour or so until the sound of footsteps came in. "Oh....don't mind me, just getting me and Nikky some more wine" Niveden said strolling down wrapped in her gown. "I think we may soon have the patter of little feet." she said with relish as she removed a bottle from the fridge. "Don't stay up too late" she said sashaying her way back upstairs. "Give it another hour" Nicole said as she popped the lid of another ice cream tub. "probably best" Agatha said clinking spoons with Nicole as though to say cheers before they both began the next tub cheerfully |
